To the Class of 1940, Camden High School: It has become Fashionable in certain quarters to look upon the futwe of Zmerioa with foreboding, to say that its great days 'as s democracy 'are over and that we are facing a dictator- ship. Such prophecies would fill us with gloom it e thought that this belief were to become ulzlversel and that Qlmerice would follow the example of' so many of' the notions of Europe. But our hope is in e citizenship which is fully aware of' the blessings ol' life in e democracy, end Fully preoored to Insure these blessings to themselves and their nosterlty. Everyone should be Familiar with the terms of the Constitution of' the United States and of' the :state in which he resides. .ie should all knew about the famous Hill of Rights , and learn or' the rights guaranteed to us. I5'e should also remember that for every right there ls e duty. fe should then comoere our rights and privileges with those oz' the people of' other countries. l nersonelly feel thst our best method of preserving these rights lies in the or-oper training of our youth. Sfaie Se nate Cha TH Democracy is based on the theory of represent- ative government. That is where it differs from other forms of government. Although these other governmental systems seem new to us, they are essentially old-for they revert to the idea of concentrated self perpetuating power against which the representative democratic system was successfully launched a few centuries ago. The liberty and freedom which we in- herited must be protected from tyranny and despotism, and so our anchor is tolerance and friendshipg our ideal is mutual understanding. We need not fear for the future of America if its people continue to practice democracy of the manner and democracy of the heart. ber
