IIEIIIIJIIRFIIIV Having completed our public school education, we now prepare to begin our journey up and over the winding path of life. YVe are now free to seek success and happiness in a land of glorious peace and innumerable opportunities. W'ith compassion in our hearts for the youth of battle-blemished Europe, we are truly thankful that our future solely depends upon the manner in which we pursue the ideals of life, a choice we alone are privileged to make. Realizing this to be a crucial period in not only our lives, but also in the interest of humanitarianism, we have chosen as our theme that of Peace and Democracy which should be forever- more the title of the song in the heart of every loyal American. ' ARTHUR FIGHTER, Editor-in-Chief. . L-Q , lei' . f A W :Ei ' Srhrrf 01-'NEw.l1s1rs1:y Iixsrvrw-m'H IJ:-rrm:e1'vnxT February 13, I 9 4 O. To the Class of 1940, Camden High School: It has become Fashionable in certain quarters to look upon the futwe of Zmerioa with foreboding, to say that its great days 'as s democracy 'are over and that we are facing a dictator- ship. Such prophecies would fill us with gloom it e thought that this belief were to become ulzlversel and that Qlmerice would follow the example of' so many of' the notions of Europe. But our hope is in e citizenship which is fully aware of' the blessings ol' life in e democracy, end Fully preoored to Insure these blessings to themselves and their nosterlty. Everyone should be Familiar with the terms of the Constitution of' the United States and of' the :state in which he resides. .ie should all knew about the famous Hill of Rights , and learn or' the rights guaranteed to us. I5'e should also remember that for every right there ls e duty. fe should then comoere our rights and privileges with those oz' the people of' other countries. l nersonelly feel thst our best method of preserving these rights lies in the or-oper training of our youth. It Is, therefore, gretitjving beyond measure to see e body of young people -alert to influences which seek to undermine the spirit of democracy. f In dedicating your Yesr Hook to Democracy U you are le-sving behind you an evidence of proper training 1n the principles of goverment and ettesting to 2 real love oz' country. That is where it differs from other forms of government. Although these other governmental systems seem new to us, they are essentially old-for they revert to the idea of concentrated self perpetuating power against which the representative democratic system was successfully launched a few centuries ago. The liberty and freedom which we in- herited must be protected from tyranny and despotism, and so our anchor is tolerance and friendshipg our ideal is mutual understanding. We need not fear for the future of America if its people continue to practice democracy of the manner and democracy of the heart. ber 5? ,le Q if is v Ui i i d We, the june class of nineteen hundred and forty, dedicate this Purple and Gold to Philip Randle, because his ideals of sincerity and perseverance are also ours. It is most fitting that we, in this age of freedom and equality, should seek to emulate one so upright and democratic. He taught us the importance of friendship and understanding. From him we take unlimited courage in our convictions and belief in ourselves, and so armed, stride forth with heads high, to make our way among life's fascinating paths. Guide, helper, conhdant, and friend-we shall remember him forever. ir ir ir 'Ir ir HZHHUN ir if 'f?1 fg, ir f iniii X -I Ilai X an ll'3: xi' gl ll gl gl ,FJ X .4 'ifjtxix -All 3 wmmd' NTNUAX 31331 'Vaaax Vaanla 1 raafx xllli x llll 1 'ANN una 11 l P l l l A, itil' is HN Z 'IQII I U a'.54kLLL F Wx Jie 3. 1, - f ,, 1 is H 1 Q3 x ff Over one hundred and Fifty-three years ago thirty-eight weary delegates to a convention in Philadelphia affixed their signatures to four handwritten sheets of parchment on which were stated the terms by which thirteen weak, inde- pendent republics hoped to exist as one strong nation. Time has proven their hopes were not futile, that unity could be realized. Certainly one of the most important contributions to this unity was the fact that these foresighted dele- gates realized that the success of a democracy depended on the intelligence of its citizenry. A Fine educational system has been developed since then, and today our teachers have done much to instill within us a genuinely democratic intelligence. If we are to preserve this heritage of democracy, all of our educational forces must continue to hold aloft'idea1s of civilized and democratic behaviour, open-mindedness, and consideration for the rights of others. This excerpt from the Declaration of Independence reveals some of the principles upon which our country was and is founded. Simple axiomatic principles yes yct tl and ha 1 ' , .- ' ie opportunities tpmess of a people rest upon them, You may think we have little prosperity, opportunity, and happiness, but compare these with those of other countries, and just see if a new light isn't shed on the subject. It has often been said that America's future lies in its youth. Each one of us, no matter how insignihcant we may seem, will have a part in the United States of the future. A great thing is usually a complexity of many smaller, humblcr things. XVe are the huntbler things upon which is the duty of maintaining a great thingithis land of ours. All of us cannot do great deeds to fulhll this duty, but plain, ordinary, righteous living is a great deed in itself. Our democracy rests on a faith prupounded by our fore- fathers, Will the rising generations who shall constitute the America of tomorrow uphold anti preserve that faith? Democ- racy lies in the balance. So remarked the local newspaper after the opening night of Rose Marie, which proved to be the greatest success in the history of Camden High School's musical productions. The show was presented in the school auditorium on the evenings of April llth, 12th, and 13th. The cast, the costumes, the settings, the musical scores, and the situations amused, delighted, and thrilled the audience. They left the auditorium with memories of an evening well spent. Great credit is due Mr. Haley for his untiring eflorts to make this show such a remarkable success. itll? 1 3 A n O4 555, MX, rw 2? in F A1 -. With a start of two wins and a close defeat at the hands of New Brunswick, the season promised favorable for the future until Coach Palese suddenly found himself confronted with the loss of four veterans and a tough schedule ahead. From then on the team worked hard, but circumstances prevented any more victories. The outstanding players were joe Martin, Bill Leone, and Tony Vaitas, all graduating. The fine example of sportsmanship set by Captain Joe Martin will long stand as a challenge to all who follow. The absence of these veterans from the team next season will leave large holes in the lineup and give next season's ball-toters plenty of responsibility. The backfield next year will probably include Buster Denof and Benny Walters, while Al Vogt, Ossie Scappa, Mat Siedlicki, and Walt Bubien will be given over to the line. Greatly aiding the cause were the following seniors: Charles Hopke, David Pyper, Robert Caputi, Alfred Kozak, and James Pont, who will be missed next season. However, coming up are several good prospects who will attempt to make next season a perfect one. The schedule was as follows: C. H. S. Op. Placing high hopes and a great deal of stock in Five veterans of last year's tennis squad: Martin Sussman, Harry Taylor, Edward Manning, joseph Moor, and William Moor, Coach William Duthie is carefully eyeing the South Jersey League trophy with much admiration and desire. Eugene Bush, Charles Fuhrman, Raymond Francis, and Robert Whitney, new members of the team, who have shown great possibilities and ability, are also expected to bring home victorious news from the war of racquets. Bolstered with a fair num- ber of veterans, and many strong new- comers, the track team undertook a grueling schedule of interscholastic and dual meets. In each event there was keen competition and it was difficult to decide who dominated the field of en- trants. Assisting the coaches was an efficient staff of managers headed by Richard Vogel and Mfoodrow West. Those for whom the 1940 season was the last in C. H. S's colors were: Tony Vaitas, Henry Bloom, discus and shot, Bill Leone, javeling Charley Hopke, hurdles and high-jumpg Herb Schoell- kopf, Russ Mattson, and Walt Sochacki, half mileg Joe Olenick and Bob Caputi, hurdlesg Art Jones, pole vaultg Don Palese, dashes. With eight veterans to depend upon from last year, we find many new additions in whom we stow much faith during the present cam- paign. The entire team includes: Ossie Scappa, Joe Martin, Al Vogt, Wally Bubien, Ed Roman, Archie Luzi, Ollie Fullard, Dick Quick, Alfred Litwa, James Eulo, Phil Brooks, Ed Coyle, Anthony DiServio, Al Luzi, Stan Chojnacki, Ed Skolski, Ed Schuda, Orlando Campoli, Ed Biehler, Chris Angelos, Charles Weber, and John Banks. HUGH WILSON DOROTHY MAE ZULKER A CLASSMATE JSIGNIFICANT FACT, too obvious to require much elaboration, is the growth of the ii Campus Publishing Company. From seven to seventy yearbooks in three years, to make us the largest exclusive year- book publishers in the east. One way to explain it is to say that Campus in not an engraver, a printer, or any other type of processor, but a service organization well acquainted with the ins and outs of yearbooksg co-ordinating all the phases of yearbook planning and processing. Not being a processor, we can cover the field more completely. There is no budget too small or too large in which we are not interested, nor any reproductive process that we cannot supply--letterpress printing, engraving, offset printing, or gravure. Using these processes to the best advantage, we now make available five different means to a good book. In letterpress printing, MASTER-PRINT and UENGRAV-PRINT. In offset printing, HMASTERTONE' and VELVETONE - and in gravure, NREGENTVUREK' All five, from start to finish, are handled alike, receiving the same Perceptiplan servicing, specialized handling of your yearbook from the infant idea to delivery of a fine finished edition. All five are Campus books through and through. These five -differing in price only as they differ in desired effect and budget limita- tions -possess in full those superiorities in appearance, economy, and general effect that have, in three years, made Campus the leading service organization that it is. , , Pususumc coMPAnv,mc. 15N srnucz sr., rnltnnrmun, PA. Our MA5TERTONE process was used in publishing this 1940 Purple and Gold I Elsllllllllfiot YVe are exceedingly proud to have been selected ofli- cial photographers for CAMDEN High School. YVe wish to thank, in particular, those students and faculty members who gave so willingly of their time and energy that this yearbook might be the beautiful token it is. lHQfltQ2at QM' Q2 BINNEY 61 SMITI-I COMPANY Manufacturers of CRAYOLA ANDU-SEPTIC DUSTLESS CHALK GLOAMA BLOCK PRINTING INK PERMA PRESSED CRAYONS ARTISTA TEMPERA POSTER PAINT ARTISTA WATER COLORS FIRMA GRIP PASTE i' COLORED CI-IALK FRESCOL i' SHAW FINGER PAINTS R.
