CAMDEN World Radio Center Courlesy R. C. A. Victor BERTRAM RUTTENBERG, 1940 T HAS been said that the sun never sets on the British Empire. Truly, the same could be said of R. C. A. From Greenland to Australia, from Vatican City, Home of the Popes, to Islam Morocco, most of the radio stations bear the mark HR. C. A., and Made in Camden, N. I., U. S. A. Daily, thousands of orders pour into Camden from all corners of the globe, for Camden is the center of radio produc- tion and is the nucleus of radio experimenta- tion. Now let us take a good look at the great factories in Camden, where these miracles of radio have taken place. Here the R. C. A. has twenty-seven large buildings, many of which are block-size, covering forty-three acres of land. These contain over six miles of conveyor belts for the various processes of manufacture. One can gather the gigantic size of the R. C. A. manufacturing processes from the fact that the cabinet division disposes of eight tons of sawdust every hour, and that the plants use enough electric power in one day to light the streets of Camden for a week. As I sat listening to Mr. Gilbert of the publicity department, high up in the gen- eral office building, the realization of the hugeness of R. C. A. left me somewhat dazed. Looking from the window, I could see buildings stretching out on both sides. Housed in one are the wonderful experi- mental and research laboratories where the 6 The High School Record Magic Eye. Metal Tubes, Electric Tuning, and most recently, television have been perfected. Behind locked doors, under the direction of that brilliant scientist, Dr. Zworykin, improvements on the devices of today and research as to the future possi- bilities of radio are constantly being carried on. Now they are testing and perfecting a device which will print a facsimile news- paper automatically during the night, by means of electronic impressions as received by radio direct from the newspaper office. The owner will be able to tear otf and read the latest news bulletins in the morning, which have been broadcast during the night. These will soon be on the market. In other buildings, all types of radio and television sets are being manufactured. Great radio transmitters, aviation equip- ment, and small police car radios alike are made here. ln one part of a building, deli- cate radio apparatus for the Army and Navy is made with the greatest precaution and secrecy. ln still other buildings such diversified objects as radio watch analizersf' weapon detectors, telephoto equipment, phono- graph records, victrolas, and motion pic- ture sound equipment are manufactured. Mr. Gilbert, smiling at my reaction to the information he was giving me, said, Radio has a great influence on the world of today. It will run the world of tomor- row.
