L 1 ' I I Y ' - ' I CAMDEN World Radio Center Courlesy R. C. A. Victor BERTRAM RUTTENBERG, 1940 T HAS been said that the sun never sets on the British Empire. Truly, the same could be said of R. C. A. From Greenland to Australia, from Vatican City, Home of the Popes, to Islam Morocco, most of the radio stations bear the mark HR. C. A., and Made in Camden, N. I., U. S. A. Daily, thousands of orders pour into Camden from all corners of the globe, for Camden is the center of radio produc- tion and is the nucleus of radio experimenta- tion. Now let us take a good look at the great factories in Camden, where these miracles of radio have taken place. Here the R. C. A. has twenty-seven large buildings, many of which are block-size, covering forty-three acres of land. These contain over six miles of conveyor belts for the various processes of manufacture. One can gather the gigantic size of the R. C. A. manufacturing processes from the fact that the cabinet division disposes of eight tons of sawdust every hour, and that the plants use enough electric power in one day to light the streets of Camden for a week. As I sat listening to Mr. Gilbert of the publicity department, high up in the gen- eral office building, the realization of the hugeness of R. C. A. left me somewhat dazed. Looking from the window, I could see buildings stretching out on both sides. Housed in one are the wonderful experi- mental and research laboratories where the 6 The High School Record Magic Eye. Metal Tubes, Electric Tuning, and most recently, television have been perfected. Behind locked doors, under the direction of that brilliant scientist, Dr. Zworykin, improvements on the devices of today and research as to the future possi- bilities of radio are constantly being carried on. Now they are testing and perfecting a device which will print a facsimile news- paper automatically during the night, by means of electronic impressions as received by radio direct from the newspaper office. The owner will be able to tear otf and read the latest news bulletins in the morning, which have been broadcast during the night. These will soon be on the market. In other buildings, all types of radio and television sets are being manufactured. Great radio transmitters, aviation equip- ment, and small police car radios alike are made here. ln one part of a building, deli- cate radio apparatus for the Army and Navy is made with the greatest precaution and secrecy. ln still other buildings such diversified objects as radio watch analizersf' weapon detectors, telephoto equipment, phono- graph records, victrolas, and motion pic- ture sound equipment are manufactured. Mr. Gilbert, smiling at my reaction to the information he was giving me, said, Radio has a great influence on the world of today. It will run the world of tomor- row. As we look back. the four years which then seemed so long and tedious now seem to be only a yester- day's memory. During these past four years we have all gained many friends some of whom we shall possibly never see again and yet still others will remain with us indefinitely. Even if the grades seemed hard we wouldn't take back those years at the cost of losing our friendships. Anna llotliman and David Pinsky represent the class as valedictorians. Anna expects to use the 1Vor1d's Fair as her subiectp Pinsky's possible topic is The Four Liberties. Edna Kelly, Heimtraut Dietrich. Alilton Yveiner. Alorton Weiser, Ruth Schow, Charles Kratten- maker, Edna Gerber, Naomi Fritz, Hubertus Loh- nan, Hazel Torkewitz, Robert Alarms, Vincent Blal- let, and Anna Segal make up the list of lifteen honor students. Although the spare time of a graduating senior is extremely limited, Phyllis Nlasten, as manager of baseball: Catherine Carson, Naomi Fritz, Caroline Foca, lklary Parisi, and Virginia Frey tind time to play an exceedingly good game of baseball. No one will forget the unique portrayal by Vincent Mallet ofthe mad bishop, a character in Bliss Lord's annual play, the Second Overture, by lvlaxwell Anderson. Merit should be given to the talented violinist, Francis Tursi. The beautiful melodies produced by his hands have won many awards for both himself and his alma mater. Our nimble-footed Alercury, Harry Luessen, has proved himself worthy ot' such a title by returning with top honors from the Penn Relays. For this accomplishment he received a medal this twelfth medall. Nice work, Harry! Our ending is a sad one because of the loss of Dr. YVilliam Seip, who died not so long ago after many weeks of sutliering. XVe are particularly sad because of the fact that the members of our class were the last to have Ur. Seip for a full term of chemistry. Yve shall never forget his constant chant t'Dig in, well-known by his track team, as well as the mem- bers of his classes. JANUARY, 1940 Our class is well represented in every spring activ- ity about the school. Samuel Platt deserves special praise for his tine work on Camden's track team. Sam was a great 24 The High School Record asset in bringing home the bacon at thc Penn Relays. Betty Zeidman, Norman Sherman, and Alartin Alargolit portrayed roles in Aliss Lord's annual spring play. Numerous praiseworthy remarks were passed concerning our three young players. YVho is it that can be observed snapping unique candid pictures? None other than versatile lerome Goldman. And are his snapshots interestingl Our representative in the art department is 1rene Dusenberry. lrene was awarded a certificate for special merit in art work. A very interesting picture was taken of Dorothy Squillace and lklartin Aliller on the dance floor. A twisting, turning, tumbling exhibition was given by the Girls' Athletic Association. Alildred lohnson conquered all opposition by doing a tlying tumble over nine girls. Several of our fellow classmates are contributors to our Latin newspaper. Our own Alildred Hart- mann is chief editor of this publication. Caroline Giordano is still tops in the intellectual side of our class. JUNE, 1940 Although this beautiful spring weather makes many of us a wee bit lazy, it does not seem to inter- fere with the fine work of Leonard Fuhrman, Xvil- liam Floor, and loseph Aloor, our members of the tennis team. Xve certainly hope they have a suc- cessful season. Yvhen you attend any entertainment at our school you always are certain to see Fred Burton, Edward Colalillo, George Gelernt, Altired Kozack, joseph Alartin, Iames Pont, Arthur Fichter, Adrian B-V liit'eL'7 Eugen' ,JU Eckhardt, Robert Caputi, Richard French, Dominic Palese, Everett Oliver, and Hyman Rosen busily us- hering pretty girls to their seats. They enjoy their work immensely. 11' you have never seen our ushers in action, you should go to the Spring Alusic Festival, lioryou will also see Alorton Rappa- port, Ioseph and XK'i1liam Floor, Xvilliam Hyland, Oswaldo Di Pietro, Rich- ard French, lack Abbott, lack Hildebrandt, Fred 'nu'- Burton, Carolyn Pfeller, and Ann Cutler in the band. ln addition to hearing our band, you will also be entertained by our orchestra and various musical organizations of Camden. lANU.-XRY, 1941 Let your imagination run wild, while you accom- pany us on a sight-seeing tour. Xvho are those im- portant people over there? They are the new class otlicers ot' the lanuary 19-11 Class. Good luck to you in the future. President Carmen Riviello, Vice- President Flerilyn Asay, Secretary Doris Howey, and Treasurer Louis O'13rien. Here come our ushers. Philips Brooks, lr., Oliver Palumbo, and lames Stewart. They will be glad to escort you. XVhat is all this chatter about Bernice Relkin? A drawing ot Bernice Relkin's has been awarded a place in a national exhibition. Now over to the tennis court. Clara Cecich and Ellen Kelly are eagerly playing tennis, and the score is deuce. Bend down, sisters Ellen Kelly, Florence Sbar. and Sylvia Yieser, while you skillfully roll the ball down the bowling alley. Xvould you like to have accompanied Philips Brooks, lr., lanet Reyno. Bernice Relkin, lack Bass, Evelyn Ewen, Doris Lewis, lean Arinsberg, lames Stewart, Pavvo Kykhnen, Boone Clyborne, Ellen Kelly, Lillian Gates, Ruth Rothschild, Fred- erick Fiedler, Yvilliam ftlandell, Florence Sbar, Rob- ert YVilinski, and Faust Coccia on their visit to NValt XVhitman's home? Back to school where we hear the strains of music. Yvhat is it all about? ltts practice for the spring music festival to be held on Flay 2.3 and 26 in the high school auditorium. The participants are: Alyrtle Robinson, Walliam Brown, Edna King. Robert Bat- ten, lanet Reyno. fllerilyn Asay, Faust Coccia, and Ambrose Faust. Now for a little journey to Room 216 where the Pin and Ring Committee holds its meetings. The chairmanis lames Stewart. He is assisted by Lillian Sbariscia. Philips Brooks. and leannette Gottlieb. Over in another huddle an are Louis Botte, Elwood Powell, Doris Lewis, Alice Flitchell. Natalie Covert. Eleanor Flelson. Harry Switzer, Edward Nlanning, Kenneth Flichelbach. dlartie Zelnick. Violet Crouth- amal. and Flary lane Parke. the members of the lunior Prom Committee. 10-tl It seems that Camden High School is never satis- tied with running along ordinary channels, but it al- ways has to have some special goal at which to aim. At the time ot' the last edition of the Rlicoau, it was our yearly play, The Gondoliersf' now its inter- est has turned to Clean-up Xveek, and the forth- coming examinations. If we do as well in the latter as we did in the liormer, we will be more than satis- tied with ourselves, tor the entire 10A Class entered into the spirit ot' Clean-up lveek with a do or die determination. and 1 can assure you that they did not die. It is with such determination that our fellow class- mates enter into all ot' the various sports. Take the track team for example. tvilliam Luessen, lack Klinger, Louis Slascio, Paul Stauning and Thaddeus Suckiel are out for track practice every day, and when the time comes tor them to compete against other schools, they never have to dip their colors to any opponents. Gerald Tull, Plartin Sussman. Yvilbur Peters, and Harold Turner are members ot' our class who are ou for tennis. itlartin Sussman, by the way, has held the number one position on the team for two years. and with another year or two of practice, will be a formidable opponent indeed. IANUARY, 1942 Now that spring is in the air everyoneis thoughts turn to everything but schoolwork. .Irv you aivarz' H1al4h1argaret Fields, Dlildred Banks, Virginia Carsley, Rose Cianci.
