Mr. Hutchins has lead the band to two first-place triumphs in the Iris Festival in the past two years. The band marched in the Shrine Bowl, played several Sunday concerts, and par- ticipated in many civil programs and drives . This year the band marched in all football games, adding much pep and co- lor during the half. In the coming spring, they plan to enter the Winthrop College band contest and to entertain with a series of concerts. We give a special note of thanks to Mr. Hutchins for the work and expense he has put into the remodeling of the band room. While many members of the band will graduate this year, the students of Camden High will benefit for years to come from Mr. Hutchins' generous and ambi- tious labor. Johnny Kornegay, voted by his team as the most valuable player of the year, played both defensive and offensive ball all year. He was in there just about 48 mi- nutes of every game. He was outstanding as a linebacker on defense and really held down the center of the line on offense. Because of these two factors he was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl Game in Char- lotte. Johnny was also chosen as first string center on one of the South Carolina all state teams. Yes, without Johnny the Bulldogs certainly wouldn't have fared as well as they did this season. The opening game, with Bishopville, the crowd roaring, two fighting elevens, and Camden emerged the victor by rolling upa score of 32 to 7. Turbeville, a freshman, scored all 32 points. The second clash of the season opened with a bang as Camden went for a touchdown on the first play from scrimage. But Dreher's large number of reserves were just toomuchfor the Bulldogs as they defeated us by a score of 25 to 14. The Gamecocks of Sumter had never seen such an inspired team as they met on Sept. 26, when they met the Bulldogs, bitter from defeat of the week before. Sumter didn't have a chance as Camden went wild. The first half score was 26-0. The final score Camden-33, Sumter -12. Florence hadn 't won a game and their boys were really on the ball. The Bulldogs didn't know what happened. Florence emerged the winner 25-6. The defensive thriller of the season was on tap next for the'Bulldogs. The game withChes- ter was really a heartbreaker as Chester got inside our 20 yard line only once, while we were inside the Chester 5 yard line 3 times but failed to score. Chester's once inside our 20 yard line was enough though as they defeated us 7-O. The Hartsville game was a see-saw battle with Camden finally coming out on top 18-14. The high-light of the game-Hutchins recovery of a fumble and his mad race of 92 yards for a touch- down. The Bearcats of Brookland-Cayce came to Camdenundefeated in 6 games and were expecting to continue their winning. But they had the Bulldogs to contend with, and Camden surprised the whole state by outclassing B.C. completely. B.C. didn't even score until the last seconds of the final quarter. The surprise of the season-Camden 19 - Brookland-Cayce 7. Darlingtonwas aterrifying battle as Turbeville and others were out for a long stay of inju - ries. Mays, infor Turbeville, however pulled the Bulldogs through by scoring all 14 points. The final score Camden 14 - Darlington 7. Turbeville was still out, Captain Connell was on the sidelines for the rest of the season as Charleston's powerhouse came to Camden and overpowered us 18-0. We played a good game considering the odds. Columbia High hadn't won but one game when they met us, but then and there they added a- nother. The Bulldogs blew-up, nothing would go and we were beaten 20 to 12. Lancaster, our homecoming, was really a brawl. It was a hard fought game with plenty of defense. It was a game in which our passes finally paid off and we won 13 to 6. The final game ofthe season was against Orangeburg. The senior's last game and they really wanted to win it and they did. Faris Sheheen's interception of a pass and Turbeville's passing and running put the game on ice for us. The whole team played a splendid game, and the score showed it, Camden 20 - Orangeburg 12. q Z 2-. gl I 4-52.3-m l ,gf -.4 1 t A -.'. -..nay 5 in pm OUR C OAC HES We hadacompletelynewcoaching staff this year as all Camden wel- comed back Lindsay Pierce as head coach. Before he moved to Conway, he had one state championship team here in Camden, and was runner up twice. For the 7years he was here he didn't lose over 3 games a season, and one season had a record of ll wins and no losses. This year he came back and brought up a team who had lost 9 games in 51 to a 7 win and 5 loss team this past season. Coach Pierce was alsohead coach of the South Carolina Shrine Bowl Game which won 23 to 19 in the closing minutes of the game. Yes,Mr. Pierce and the single wing is back in Camden to stay, we hope! Caro1Cox, a graduate and football star of Clemson college,is a fa- vorite of students and faculty alike. His witty jokes were always appre- ciated. Before coming to Camden he coached at Denmark. Now back working with his old head coach,he is certainly a very help- ful asset to Camden sports. .aa ' ' BULLDOG BUS The newly o r g an i z ed Bulldog S , H Club ofCamden and the Camden High i 5 1 School Athletic Association has fur- ' ' nished the school with a new athle- tic bus after the old Bulldog bus was w r e c k e d .
