i i 4 Introduction In the Twentieth Century, the functioning of a public secondary school appears to be a complex matter. However it may not actually be complex at all. We may, in fact, compare it to the simplicity of a medieval court. Since Cavalier, Calvert's namesake, is reminiscent of bygone timesg let us take a look at ourselves and see just how much life on the Calvert Court compares with life on the court of a medieval king. As much as the students may hate to admit it, Calvert is actually controlled by the faculty, who, like the Barons of old, see that everyday life proceeds smoothly, that everyone does his own share of the work fhomework?j and that small disputes are settled before they develop into larger ones. It is the Barons who guide the under- classmen on the road to becoming seniors and who guide the seniors as they go out, ready to conquer the world. After working their way up through the ranks for twelve years, the seniors have earned the title of the Knights of Calvert. They have advanced to the highest rank possible and now command the respect of those under them. This is their year, and several festivals are held in their honor before they go out into the world to seek their fortunes. The underclassmen at Calvert are comparable to medieval squires. They are not yet knights, but upon entering Senior High they began the three years which would lead them to the top. As did the Squires of centuries past, Calvert's Underclassmen begin to take part in many new activities. They watch and learn from those who have passed before them, and they prepare to rise to high ranks-to enter the realm of knighthood. In early times, artisans with common skills joined together and formed guilds. Today at Calvert many students with common interests join together in clubs or organizations so that they may better pursue their individual interests as a group, Many of these guilds sponsor what' would have been known as festivals centuries ago. Dances, talent shows, pageants and many other events crowd the agenda at Calvert. While many of these, such as the Miss C.S.H.S. Pageant, are carried out with elaborate- ness fit for a king, others are marked by the simplicity of a cheerleader record-hop. One of the most striking resemblances between today and medieval days are the sports. Today's Cavaliers test the skills of rivals on the court as well as on the field much as their historical counterparts competed in tournaments. Today, as before, favored participants are cheered on by fair ladies while bands provide soul-stirring music to encourage the competitors as well as the spectators.
