However it may not actually be complex at all. We may, in fact, compare it to the simplicity of a medieval court. Since Cavalier, Calvert's namesake, is reminiscent of bygone timesg let us take a look at ourselves and see just how much life on the Calvert Court compares with life on the court of a medieval king. As much as the students may hate to admit it, Calvert is actually controlled by the faculty, who, like the Barons of old, see that everyday life proceeds smoothly, that everyone does his own share of the work fhomework?j and that small disputes are settled before they develop into larger ones. It is the Barons who guide the under- classmen on the road to becoming seniors and who guide the seniors as they go out, ready to conquer the world. After working their way up through the ranks for twelve years, the seniors have earned the title of the Knights of Calvert. They have advanced to the highest rank possible and now command the respect of those under them. This is their year, and several festivals are held in their honor before they go out into the world to seek their fortunes. The underclassmen at Calvert are comparable to medieval squires. They are not yet knights, but upon entering Senior High they began the three years which would lead them to the top. As did the Squires of centuries past, Calvert's Underclassmen begin to take part in many new activities. They watch and learn from those who have passed before them, and they prepare to rise to high ranks-to enter the realm of knighthood. In early times, artisans with common skills joined together and formed guilds. Today at Calvert many students with common interests join together in clubs or organizations so that they may better pursue their individual interests as a group, Many of these guilds sponsor what' would have been known as festivals centuries ago. Dances, talent shows, pageants and many other events crowd the agenda at Calvert. While many of these, such as the Miss C.S.H.S. Pageant, are carried out with elaborate- ness fit for a king, others are marked by the simplicity of a cheerleader record-hop. One of the most striking resemblances between today and medieval days are the sports. Today's Cavaliers test the skills of rivals on the court as well as on the field much as their historical counterparts competed in tournaments. Today, as before, favored participants are cheered on by fair ladies while bands provide soul-stirring music to encourage the competitors as well as the spectators. The mighty seniors entered C.S.H.S. in 1966. For two years, the class was separated: half of it being at the annex while the other half was at the main building. This limited the amount of activities the class could organize. In 1968, the class was united as juniors. Our prime responsibility became that of organizing the junior-Senior Prom, The class sponsored various activities in order to raise money: a candy campaign, a movie, two dances, including the Miss C.S.H.S. Pageant, two car washes, and a spectacular car rally. Through these various activities, we were able to produce the 1969 Prom, Tahitian Holiday. Then, our year was here at last. It promised to be fillfd with fun and excitement but only through hard work. The first major event of our senior year was the taking of senior portraits. Graduation was brought closer when announce- ments and name cards were selected and ordered. Fittings for caps and gowns made us realize that we would soon be on our own. Our indi- vidual thoughts were varied. Some of us eagerly awaited college acceptances. Others made plans for future employment. Many looked forward to enlisting in the service and planning marriage. But we still had much work ahead before june 12, 1970 would arrive. So, seniors try to make their last year their best. They work for seniors privileges and other projects that identify them as the top class in the school. Seniors hold the main offices and are the most active members in almost all of the organizations in the school. Seniors are cap- tains of the teams and the cheerleaders. These are among many of our senior memories. All of these help to prove that the Class of '70 truly reigned supreme. CLASS OFFICERS Sealed-Ann Angil-President Debra Childs-Vice President Lavenia Locks-'Secretary Mary Lou Pardoe-Treasurer They now know which is Building A and which is Building B. They've become accustomed to the ten minute bell and no longer jump up to leave class when it rings. They realize Mr. Bergin, Mr. Fletcher and Mr. Tidwell are not quite as terrible as they seem. Familiarity has made them bold enough to fight their way into the cafe- torium against the tide of seniors streaming out. They are in their second year of high school. Having only half a day at the Annex, many sophomores have become involved in school functions. Football, baseball, basketball, band, Student Council and other clubs can boast sophomore members. They crowd in Mr. Proffitt and Mr. jefferson's Driver Ed classes in preparation for the most important event in a sophomores life-taking the test for a license. Once ob- tained, the license holds its own cloak of status. Dates, dances and night games follow. They struggle with onomatopoeia, Shakespeare and biology experiments, yet they some- how remain cheerful. They can be heard laughing about the mistakes they see the fresh- men make. But why shouldn't they? They did the same things last year. . 1 W, VE i T-Q A., 4'Ljx:'N Q' . -X X f. 'a. K .- V A l 4 ,155 '. Freshman Class Don't know where we come from Don't know where we're going to, But if all this should have a reason We would be the last to know. So let's hope there is a promised land Hang on til then as best you can. Ask a freshman what he thinks of high school life and he may tell you that he doesn't even feel he is part of it. With split shifts and isolation at the Annex, most freshmen are completely separate from the rest of the school. Those who attend the morning shift go to the main building for twenty minutes- ample time to gobble lunch before going home. A few who are fortunate enough to have specialized classes may be bussed to the main building for one or two periods. However, those who have the afternoon shift see the main building only as a blur when they whiz by on the bus. Traditionally the freshman year is a time of adjustment-to establish practices of upper classmen, to the greater work load pushed on them, to the organizing of their first class election, to the clubs they join because they can miss some class time, the probable patterns they will follow for the next three years. In spite of all these adjustments, the freshmen aren't concerned with much. Social injustices don't fire them, nor do politics. Knowing what's going on around them and at the main building doesn't mean much to them. For now, they are concerned only with hang on til then as best you can or at least until they're sophomores. This idea was carried over from the campaign mottos of the President, Joyce Stinnett, Vice-President, Leslie Man- ser, Secretary, Marilyn Littlefield and the Treasurer, Joyce Phipps. The President promoted many worthy projects sponsored throughout the school year. Among these were having the cafetorium .staff offer orange juice as an item at the snack bar, sponsoring the home- coming activities and promoting the 1970 Mardi Gras. Acting under the leadership of Miss Clark, Mrs. Nicholson and Mr. Mahood, the Student Council has been a most beneficial medium of communication for the students, teachers 'and administration of the school. The Campus Courier assumes the role of watchman of the school. It reports on sports events, dances, student likes and dislikes, and teacher personalities. This year the paper was sponsored by Mrs. Ann Brown. An English teacher most of the day, Mrs. Brown worked hard for the Campus Courier and made it a success in 1969-70. The C.S.H.S. chapter of the National Honor Society is dedicated to those ideals exemplified in the following four areas: Scholarship, Character, Leadershipg and Service. The members of this organization encourage all students to at- tain and maintain these ideals. Each year the NHS has two inductions to recognize the students who have achieved these goals. Membership in the NHS is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon any high school student. These students displayed their interest by sponsoring a teacher's talent show and donating money to help some Calvert Countains have a merrier Christmas. They also sponsored the spring talent show which enabled the students to display their many talents. I24 W-qkxk s -Sa - at se f I' CHRIS WENDELYN-Sponsor THE 1969-70 OFFICERS: KLefl lo rigbll John T. Leading the list of graduates are co-captains jeff -jenkins and Greg Sealey. jeff was a starting tackle for two years be- fore moving to fullback. He earned raves from opposing coaches at both positions. Greg, an all S.M.A.C. de- fensive back, was known for all his hard tackling and leadership quali- ties. Quarterback Gary Mishou did an outstanding job directing the club and throwing the football. The Lit- tle General gave Cavalier fans plen- ty to cheer about when he put the ball in the air. Halfback Dean Dent returned from an injury that ruined his junior year. He was a threat on punt and kick-off returns and played well de- fensively. Keith Williams led the Cavalier defense from the Monster posi- tion. Williams was one of the tough- est players on the team and rarely suffered an injury. One of the team's leading tacklers was linebacker john Ireland. He played a rugged brand of football from the first whistle until the last. Raymond Hall led. all receivers and blocked well from his right end position. The all-around athlete had quite a season snaring the pigskin. Kicker-end jerry Kurek gave the Cavaliers a powerful kicking game. He also used his ability to snag sev- eral important passes during the year. Defensive ends Charles Bennett and Kevin O'Connor boxed in the opposition's sweeps and threw quar- terbacks for long losses as the cam- paign rolled along. Kim Edwards played rugged de- fense and gutty offense from his tackle and center slots. The Animal provided plenty of trouble for op- posing linemen. Guard Frank Abner hustled his heart out trying to free Cavalier run- ners. The Randle Cliff flash was as good a guard as found in the con- ference. Tackle Joel Russell played hard- nosed, heads-up defense and blocked well on offense. The iron- man played injured much of the cam- paign. Kurek booms another one. Edwards slams a warrior. CHEERLEADER SPIRIT Have you got the spirit? The 1969-70 Varsity Cheer- leaders say, Yeah Man! It takes more than just spirit to make a good cheer- leader-enthusiasm, hard work, determination, and all- around personality, the ability to work with others, and the determination to want to look good. We feel this year's squad has all these qualities, plus more. We cheer for the Calvert Cavaliers because we're proud of them and we're proud to represent C.S.H.S. Even though our teams did not win all the games, we always held our heads up high. Win or lose, we knew the Cavaliers were the best. The 1969-70 Varsity Cheerleading squad consisted of nine girls: Christine Kalina, Captain, Penny Buck, Co- captain, Debbie Phillips, secretary, jessica Leone, Treasur- er, MaryAnn Bradley, Publicity Chairman, and member jackie Foote, Gail Thompson, Kim Buckmaster, and Patty Stinnett. We express our sincere thanks to Mrs. Laurencene Murphy, our sponsor, for her help and understanding, the football and basketball teams for their successful sea- son, and the students of C.S.H.S. for their support.
