Retreat Appropriately opening the Lenten season the 16th annual Calvert Retreat was this year held from February 26 to 28 Reverend Edward Mattlmce former assistant at St Marys Parish Tiffin and now stationed at the Queen of the Holy Rosary Cathedral Toledo Ohio conducted the conferences Because of the Increase in the 19401941 enrollment and the consequent lack of adequate space in St Angela s Hall students were requested to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion In their parish churches during the three day period This year the retreat was brought to a close with an unusual and beautiful candle ceremony Candles were distributed to each of the students A senior boy and a senior girl then lighted theirs from the altar candles which symbolized the wcrd of God From these two liahts the candle of each of the participants was in turn lighted All this was symbollcal of the duty of each Christian to spread the light of faith to his neighbor and throughout the whole world REVEREND EDWARD MATTIMOE Jldzssozzs The years mission activities began with the election of officers in the eight homerooms The electees con ducted the annual paper sale in which the senior boys seized first place and trophy with 157 8 per cent The same boys organized a mission club and have had regular meetings None the less important and very entertaining were the mission rallies held on November 20 and February 20 respectively Both proved very successful netting sufficient funds to replace the mission dues and Lenten mute boxes in the homerooms The climax of mission activities was reached when Father Clarence Burns a missionary of the Maryknoll the Chinese doctors and their unsuccessful results He also related his hardships and trials of captivity with bandits MISSION GROUP Seated left to right Rev Earl Schmit Pauline Weimerslurch Alice Wilhelm Paul France Jane Phillips John Halma Margaret Schauder Helen Guss Standing Thomas Burkart Maxtne Hoffman James Relf Donald Burch Helen Herbert Silvio DeRose Jettre Dell Frederick Von denberg page twenty six , , - , I I I I ' - I I . . . . . . , , - , Order, recounted his harrowing experiences in China.
