k k CALUMET HIGH SCHOOL OF GARY, INDIANA PRESENTS THE With the growth of this nation has come about the growth of a great era, commonly known as the Industrial Age. This region typifies that growth and the effect of the machine on the main occupations and way of life of the people. For this reason we wish to dedicate this book to local industry, large and small, an important cog in the nation ' s wheel of progress; and to all the people who have worked to make it great and those who will strive to add to its achievement in the future. ■ ' T tAf ' l _t 1 uuxE CRACKING UNIT STANDARD OIL ADMINISTRATION HI A % | 1 1 ' 11 Calumet School Board Wayne E. Swihart, Acting Superintendent; Alberta Klasner, Recording Secretary; John L. Howard, Secretary; Harold F. De Vault, Township Trustee; Leland W. Ladd, Treasurer; Marcus Coffman, Vice President; Edward Nowak; John Hilbrich, Attorney. The Metropolitan School Board of Calumet Township, Lake County, took office in November 1956. This action was a result of popular demand by the residents expressed in a petition circulated last spring. According to the law on formation of a new board, the members of the first school board con- sist of the township trustee, the three township advisory bocrd members, and one appointed member residing in the township. At the next general election in 1958, only residents of the township will be elected to the school board. The board meets once a month to discuss the administration of the area schools which include: Black Oak, DeVault, Hosford Park, and Ridge Elementary Schools; Ross Junior High; and Calumet High School. JAMES D. THOMAS JR. County Secondary Supervisor CHRIS ELLIOT Secretary to Mr. Swihart HAROLD E. STRYCKER A familiar person to be seen in the office this year was Mr. Strycker, our new vice- principal. As former head of the commercial department and in his twelveth year at Calumet, Mr . Strycker was by no means a new face on the school scene. Those who had occasion to come in con- tact with him in this new capacity found him more than just an administrator; we are sure that he has also become an invaluable additon to the administrative staff. . He attended Manchester College for his A.B. degree and Indiana University for his M.S. degree in education. WAYNE E. SWIHART We, the Class of 57 are very proud to say that Mr. Swihart entered this high school as head of our faculty the same year we entered as Freshmen. As these four years have passed swiftly by, he has guided us through many decisions main- taining a firm but wise attitude. We wish to express our appreciation for all his help, and hope that our class has added to the pleasant memories of his last four years at Calumet. Mr. Swihart attended Manchester College for his A.B. degree, Ashland College and and Ohio State University for a M.A. degree, and is currently attending Indiana University for his Doctorate in education. Previously he has taught in Ohio, Delphi, Indiana and our own Ross School. On No- vember 19, 1956 he was appointed Acting Superintendent of the Metropolitan School District. That man may safely venture on his way, who is so guided that he cannot stray. Scott GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT THOMAS T. CLARK Guidance Director St. Propias College, B. A. , Indiana University, M. Judy Charbonneau, a junior who was stricken with Bulbar Polio 21 months ago and almost completely paralyzed, was slowed down but not for long. Right from her record- breaking removal from an iron lung after only three weeks she has kept up a strong active pace. After six months at the Warm Springs Polio Foundation in Georgia she returned home with second place honors in their beauty contest for Queen of the Foundation. Honorary Chairman for the Gary and Calumet area Teens Against Polio” Drive for 1957, and Jr. Candidate for the Polio Queen are also included in her activities. A loyal basketball fan, Judy regularly attended the home games, and can often be found in other teen- gathering places such as, Bates Deli- catessen, and the Drive-In. Judy also attended school this year through a tutor, Mrs. Hickel, studying the regular Junior courses and she hopes to attend school as a regular student next year, graduating with her class in the spring of ' 58 ' . Her other interests and hobby included oil painting, ceramics, record collecting, and the piano. Like all girls she loves to eat, and talks constantly. The meaning of these last months to Judy is clear to see when you talk with her. Her face lights up as she says, I ' ve learned and experienced so many things, but most of all there have been so many wonderful people who have never forgotten me. The Student Council members who are elected from each home- room represent that room in a group which discusses matters re- lated to our school life. It is the duty of each of these representative members to take all discussion and proposals back to his own homeroom. The council, this year as in the past, sponsored students to attend two Student Congresses held at Gary Lew Wallace and at Purdue University. This year the president, Jerry Shaffer has been working along with members of different committees to bring a new idea into our school: assemblies. The idea has panned out very well and our hats are off to all concerned. OFFICERS President, Jerry Shaffer; Vice President, Bob Copper; Secretary, Sharon Bucko; Treasurer, Barb Gedda. SPONSOR Mrs. Lela Cooke HONOR The Junior Honor Society was organized to create an enthusiasm for good scholarship throughout the school and to stimulate a desire for service by promoting leadership and exemplary qualities of character in the students of Calumet High School . There are five qualities which a candidate for membership must possess. These qualities are: scholarship, citizenship, leadership, service and character. The members of the society had a busy year, for they sponsored a candy sale to raise funds, a candlelight induction service, a winter social, a spring dance, and a picnic. C JUNIOR President: Jack Burniston Vice President; Nancy Kolpin Secretary: Carolyn Mauger Treasurer: Velia Pichel Reporter; Pam Parry Sponsor: Miss Lillian Hamnik SOCIETIES The Senior Honor Society was organized for the purpose of inspiring students to scholarly habits of study, service to the school, leadership in activities for the advancement of the welfare of the school, good citizenship, and good character. Members of the Senior Honor Society are expected to set an example for other students of the school . Each year members present an induction ceremony for students who reach the goals set by the society. This year the members are writing their own speeches and planning the service to be held in conjunction with the P.T.A. Last year the Honor Society bought a bond from the Calumet Town- ship Holding Corporation, sent a girl to Girl ' s State, and sponsored a trip to the Indiana University Campus for the seven members of the society who wanted to go. Although the members have as yet no definite plans, they have tentatively decided on a project which will enable them to do some service for the school. In order to develop an interest in the teaching profession the club also hopes for the student to take part in teaching activities in his daily school work. The qualifications of a good teacher are 1. Personality 2. Intellectual ability 3. The knack of getting a point across. The Magister Club hopes to acquaint the student with these three factors through practical experience. 81 SUNSHINE SOCIETY President: Diane Keith Vice President: Dotty Simons Recording Secretary: Arlene Prasnikar POLIO KING QUEEN Corresponding Secretary: Carol Chimelewski Treasurer; Betty Liechty Sponsors: Miss Joan Johnson, Mrs. Barbara Hendershott This Society strives to help when and where they can by contributing to the Riley Hospital in Indianapolis, making up Christmas baskets for needy families in the community and spreading good cheer in all their contacts with others. The recent polio drive was an Tuple of full-fledged school spirit and our students on a whole certainly backing our fine basketball team. In the past a B m tourney didn ' t mean a thing but not .any more. We feel that ve can keep up this wonderful work our school will soon have test reputation in the area. Tire other day one of the classes s discussing this particular topic and it was brought up that y didn ' t think it was so much the students as it was the chers. The teachers on a whole at our school have a tendency degrade the school. They are constantly saying that at Lew llace they have such and such, and where I went to school ure wasn ' t like this. We feel that if the teachers were really the teaching profession for the reward of knowing that they 1 helped someone instead of hour much money they can make 3 leader 1 lion o ent. After sue and entertai cne is looki more such near future. ! how soon they can get out of the building after the bell js, that the students would soon lose the same feeling. Have ! ever tried to get a teacher to stay after school and help you ;h something? Their first r ark is, I ' m not getting paid to after school, Oh we ' ll a dr some of the teacher ' are really id sr . 7 es is one rotten apple in a basket to spoil hie entire bushel. mnr — mb lies in Dot Diane Sincere Jove .u, nisei; u.t$ Sotty C rocker ] romoirow at Ca Billie Sasser Ju ' nameu rno.’T m tne Dear Editor: I think s done to rai In the past ixas been decMr tions as to h can be imj greatly ap dent Council w this problem. MARCHING BAND With the advent of a football team, a marching band was a necessity. Mr. Vic Barbieri organized the first marching band at Calumet High consisting of approximately sixty members, students of the A band who would like to further extend their experience in the field of music. We are proud to claim those fast-stepping red and white clad gals who added their rhythm to our marching band ' s performance, as our Majorette Corp. This organization, which has been in existence for about five years comes under the direction of Mr. Barbieri, and meets daily at the sixth hour for practice. 121 Majorette Corp. Clark DIRECTOR The term A cappella means unaccompanied, and in this type of singing the human voice is best presented as the finest instru- ment available to man. The purpose of the choir is to instill in the members a taste for a finer type of music. The key note of this year ' s A cappella was activity as was clearly carried out in its many performances which included appearances in the Christmas Concert at the high school on Dec. 22, caroling at Minas ' s Department Store in Hammond, Christ Child Festival in Gary, Baccalaureate, and Commencement exercises. A special note of appreciation is extended to Mrs. Erwin and the F. H. A. for their assistance in the acquiring of new white satin stoles which added to the commendable appearance of the choir. As Freshmen, we had great need of class officers. Election results were: Bob Cooper, President; Elisa Pichel, Vice President; Patricia Davies, Secretary; and Bob Porter, Treasurer. In that year we were all privileged to welcome a new principal, Wayne E. Swihart, who has since been named Temporary Superintendent of the Metropolitan schools. Some Freshmen girls had a scarey three days and one night hen they were inducted into the G.A.A. This was the first year for the B.A.A. A big production, Shantytown to New York. was performed by the band and choral departments. The A Cappella division of the choral department bought new robes for themselves. Everyone was proud of our varsity basketball team when they won their own Holiday Tournament. We were doubly proud when our reserve basketball team won a tournament a few weeks later. To start us on our way money-wise we sponsored a dance. Having survived the trying freshman year of initiation, we arrived at the school, no longer green, but very well informed Sophomores. At the beginning of the school year of 1954 we elected our class officers. They were Bob Copper, President; Lily Vitale, Vice President; Jackie Wettengel, Secretary; and Harvey Ellis, Treasurer. The addition of a sundial donated by the class of 1953 added a prettv piece of landscaping to the front of the school. To raise more money for the Class of 57: fund a dance was sponsored by our class. We were all honored by the anounce- ment that our Bible Club had the largest memb ership in the world. Letterman ' s Club was formed for all boys who had earned a letter. Track and cross country were added to our list of major sports. The Junior Honor Society sponsored the Shamrock Frolic, a dance which was to be an annual affair. Reigning king and queen were Dennis Meek and Judy Nuthman. The music depart- ment sponsored the annual festival called Melody Time. As fall of 1955 rolled along we entered our Junior year as fully-seasoned upper classmen. An election for the all-important positions of class officers was held. Result — Gerald Akin, President; Joe Rzechula, Vice President; Donna Divich, Secretary; and Elisa Pichel, Treasurer. A Planning Committee was formed to plan the many activities of that year and to raise money. Through this committee we sponsored a Valentine ' s dance, Cupid ' s Capers. This was the first dance of its kind. King and Queen were Glenn Appleton and Linda Cover. Around December of that year many juniors were wandering around with their hands in the air sporting their new class rings. These rings were, we felt, the best ever for they had a new Warrior crest. A very welcome addition to the school was a brand new juke box rented by the Student Council. The new juke box was used for noon hour and evening dances. The Letterman ' s Club changed their name to Varsity Club. One of their important functions of the year was the sponsoring of a Varsity Dance and tne election of a Varsity Queen. Happily, the queen was Diane Keith, a Junior. Another addition to Calumet ' s clubs was the Homemaking Club. This is the club that is famous for its delicious bake sales. In the athletic department a golf team was added. As basketball sectional time neared, the G.A.A. decided to sponsor a Loyalty Day on the first day we played. This proved to be profit- able for it spurred our boys on to a victory over Horace Mann. This victory was a great one for Calumet for it broke a long standing first-game jinx. The music department sponsored a pro- duction called Seventeen. All of a sudden Prom time was upon us. This was the most gala event of the school year Our prom was held at the Lake Hills Country Club on May 18, 1956. Hearts were fluttering and laughter was gay while we danced In the Still of the Night to the music of Reynold Young. We were in a dream world of puffy clouds of pastel shades floating in air. Elisa Pichel and Jerry Shaffer were crowned reigning Queen and King. With the placing of the royal ermine-trimmed robe on Queen Elisa s shoulders and the presentation of gifts, our wonderful evening was com- plete. The next day we tried something never before tried at Calumet a post prom party. Mr. Farr offered Wells Street Beach for our use. The P.T.A. co-operated by preparing the food. It was rather windy and cold, but that didn ' s stop all from having a good time. Commencement was both sad and gay. Sad for we were sorry to see long-time friends leave, and gay for we were at last SENIORS. When fall of 1956 arrived we all thought to ourselves, This is it. Whatever we do now will be for the last time while in high school. The addition of a brand new football team was a great milestone in our history. Everyone supported our team with a most rousing cheering section. We won one game — our Homecoming. Our cheerleaders sponsored a very successful Homecoming Dance at which Diane Keith was crowned Homecoming Queen, and Bob Copper, Mr. Football. Our basketball B team won the Rensselaer Tournament. This year we participated in the annual Teens Against Polio campaign waged by area teen- agers. We, the seniors, were place in charge of this project, and Dick Tovsen and Linda Cover were the area captains. Judy Charbonneau was named Honorary Chairman of the entire Gary campaign. Our main business areas were in the Village Shopping Center and Black Oak. We sincerely appreciated the co-operation extended by Mr. Bennett of the Black Oak Pharmacy and Mr. Roberts of Playland in allowing us to use their stores as our headquarters. To start off our Peanutf for Polio campaign, we bombarded the school with peanuts. Shouts of Let ' s fight Polio with peanuts were heard resounding off the high walls. A dance with the admission price being a bag of peanuts was sponsored with the entire profit going to the polio fund. The next day area residents and passers-by found it hard to resist buying a bag of peanuts from a pair of shivering, hungry teenagers. Many were almost forced to buy when their cars were stopped at an intersection. It was a grand and glorious day for all who helped. Although at the end of the day we were completely exhaused, it was a wonderful experience. A grand total of $800 ranked us third in the area. Our varsity basketball team also won a Rensselaer Invitational Tournament. February 14 and 20 many seniors took a trip to Indianapolis to visit Indiana State Legislature. Along with seeing our government in action, which was extremely interesting, all had a good time. An off the cuff remark made by Mr. Strycker was, The singing has certainly improved over the singing of two years ago . February 15 we sponsored a Valentine ' s dance after a basketball game to raise money for our class fund. This year a student assembly program was set up. A committee consisting of Student Council members, class officers, and club presidents was formed to plan these assemblies. One of the main purposes of these assemblies is to boost school spirit. As sectional time drew near, plans were again made for a Loyalty Day program. Red and white corsages and pompoms were sold by the G.A.A. The day of the game everyone dressed especially nice. A special assembly was called, and a comedy skit was presented showing the burial of Wirt. Many ohhhs and ahnhs were heard as the cheerleaders wheeled out a huge, beautiful white cake for the team. It was decorated with a red warrior holding a hatchet saying, Go Warriors, Scalp Em. That night we were in jubilant spirits as we defeated Wirt 66-42. Although we did not win our second game, we were very proud of our team. The formation of the Calumet Players brought some weird sounds and contortions to the folds of our stage curtains. March 21 and 22 featured this club ' s first presentation of Stardust, a two and a half hour three act comedy. Very important dates had begun to create lumps in our throats. We ordered our cards and announcements and took measurements for our caps and gowns. Jackie Wenntengel was Vale- dictorian and Patricia Deitzman was salutatorian. Our Senior Banquet was May 8, Senior Holiday was May 9, Junior-Senior Prom at St. John ' s Panel Room was May 17, Baccalaureate was May 19, and most important of all, GRADUATION DAY on May 21, 1957. Thus end oij more have bee ours have beer high school years at Calumet High School. Many days have been sad but still gay. Mjpjr all your days at Calumet High School be as fruitful and wonderful as 135 THE NEW ADDITION The new High School addition houses four sections of the seventh and eighth grades. As soon as the new Junior High School building is completed, these sections will be removed, and the building will be used solely for high school purposes. The building took a full year to build from October of 1955, to October of 1956. The money was loaned to us by Indiana ' s Korean War Veterans Fund. This money was taken from the Gross Income Tax to pay a bonus to these veterans. Within a year enough money was left over to use for other purposes. The main purpose is loan- ing money to local school units to build schools. This building must be a separate building. The amount that we received was $250,000. In addition to all of this, approximately $20,000 has been spent for equipment in the metal shop. The furnishings and the art, food, clothing, and biology laboratories are additional expenditures. All will agree that this building is a great and very much needed addition to our school. Let us do our very best to take good care of it. THEY BACKED US . . .
