In the annexes, which were formerly restaurants and stores, Dr. Jim Bradfield, Professor of Education, recalls that refrigerators and ovens were useful not only to keep one’s lunch cold or warm, but to stare papers; he remembers a near trage- dy when certification records for teachers were scorched when some- one accidentally turned up the heat in oven where they were “filed”’. Acting President, Dr. Guy A. West, Governor Earl Warren of California, and one hun- dred and fifty automobiles filled with students and faculty made the memorable procession through downtown Sacra- mento under a banner inscribed with the words “GO EAST WITH WEST!” 14
