COACH ROY PARKS
TRACK
ROGER SPECHT, Captain
QAs has been the rule for the past four years, the track
team of the California School for the Deaf, for 1938, devel-
oped into one of the most formidable squads in this part of
the state, winning the S. A. C. A. L. championship.
lThree school records were broken when the season got
into its stride, Edward Silva running the half-mile in 2103.7
at Davis to beat the old mark, held by "tow-headed" Duen
Garner. Dale Smith, Lawrence Quijada, and
Lawrence Shoemaker, a foursome of diminutive sprinters,
broke the 880-yard relay record set by Baker, Carlson, York,
and F. Davis in 1935. The four speedsters won at Davis in
1 :34.4, much faster than the old record of 1:35.7.
QRoger "Lefty" Specht, the iron-man of C. S. D., set a new
high in the pole vault when, competing against Piedmont
High School, he soared eleven feet six inches.

BASKETBALL
MICHAEL SKROPETA, Captain
'The 1938 basketball quintet enjoyed a singularly successful
season, winning the championship of the Southern Alameda
County Athletic League. This, the first won by the school
since the erection of the gym way back in 1913, brings credit
to the coaching of Louis Mark Byouk.
'After losing two games at the start of the season the Foot-
hills showed good fighting spirit in coming back to Win the
rest of the games on the schedule.
Q If any player is to be classed as such, the individual star of
our five was Captain Mike Skropeta, brilliant center, who
scored fifty points in the league games he took part in. Roy
Miller and Theobaldo Ruffa played very well. Scores:
C. S. D. 25 Pleasanton 27 C. S. D. 23 Pleasanton 21
C. S. D. 27 Emeryville 35 C. S. D. 27 Emeryville 17
C. S. D. 38 Livermore 29 C. S. D. 20 Livermore 14
