It has been one of new experiences, fun, and the creation of a strong spirit. Many customs and traditions have been established which, along with our successes and failures, will be looked back on as our first steps. During this year many people have contributed much of their time and effort to our school. As a small measure of our appreciation and in recognition of their contributions k back we dedicate this annual to them. lll 'l'lllll'l' illllll l 'l'llil'l'llll C. H. We have all been pioneers and it has been a great thrill to see our high school rise out of a bare field and become a living reality. The same ingenuity that our forefathers showed in the development of the West was evident again and again in our students, teach- ers and parents. l'm convinced more and more each year that the spirit, which has made our country great, is still vitally alive in our young people. Being your principal has been a wonderful and valuable experience for me. Without the fac- ulty's expert guidance in the organization of rep- resentative boards, traditions, andthe student gov- ernment, such a successful year would not have been possible. Their iobs have been difficult ones, coping with the various problems presented by our newly organized school. But nevertheless, they came through with flying colors, helping to make this first year a big success. F. 'l'llllllll'l' Credit for the success of our first year rightly belongs to its students. Wholehearted cooperation among all students is a vital element in the formula for a successful high school. We can truthfully say our student body, this first year, has sup- plied this essential quality. They set a standard that will give future Condors a true view of what is necessary to continue making Calhi a fine school. Running any student body is a big iob. Our student body officers have been very successful in coping with the many problems that have arisen during our initial year. With officers, students, and faculty working together, we can build a school to be proud of. Each club at Calhi has established their consti- tution which provides the way the club will be run in the future. Every student at Calhi has had the opportunity at one time or an- other to join at least one club or participate in at least one activity. The different activities that we have around the campus have been successful due to the hard work that the students who have par- ticipated in clubs and activities have put into them. The students have not only enioyed working and putting in their time but they have also been proud of the outcome of their efforts. 5 Q O 5 1 9 Q ,Y g Front row: Dan Diebel, Melvin Coppers, Jon Redd, John Wood, John Artinger, David Carte. They practiced many hours after school and at their gym period for this Football Carnival and again for their Jingle Bells routine in the Christ- mas assembly. The baton twirlers did not perform this year because they had not been chosen until late in April. They were chosen by faculty iudges from a class of baton twirl- ers under the direction of Mr. Charles Heckel. Along with the drill team they will be a familiar sight next year on the fields. The top dances of the year were the formal Symatrona Swirl sponsored by the Girls' League, and the Pumpkin Prom and Stairway to the Stars Outside the campus, social events included a big Varsity Club sponsored dance at Whittier High featuring Harry James and his orchestra, a league dance held at El Rancho and an All-League dance in the Glendale Civic Auditorium. Numerous campus clubs attended conferences and visited various points of interest on field trips, Calhi's football teams, band and student body took an active part in the district's first big football carnival which will be an annual affair at El Rancho. s S A 4' .', ':t.g,9,,,VM, , L vu: I ...L ff! ijgfg, , f 1 L' af: k F! 1 -A-.A-,...,-.-.gy g Wi I1 we Q.. To thank all the people involved in printing an annual would be an impossibility on one page, for the whole student body has helped in some way or another. Besides the artist, photographers, copywriters, assistant editors and advertis- ing salesmen, there were the staff members who set the pages, the ticket salesmen who faithfully carried around their receipt books, and of course the student body. These students voted the name TALON for the annual from a dozen names suggested by the staff and the student body. Last, but not least, I would like to thank the assistant editors and non members who turned up on Saturdays and Easter week to put the finishing touches to this book.
