We are leaving you now, but are looking hopefully toward the future, anxiously awaiting the time to assume the tasks which lay before us. We will often find ourselves back in Memories'Lane reliving the pleasant years spent at dear old Calhan. We wish to thank our parents, teachers, classmates, Board of Education, and all others who have helped us, and made so pleasant our years of school. DEDICATION OF THE NEW SCHOOL On October 9, 1971, laying of the cornerstone and dedication of the new school addi- tions: the Primary Unit, the High School Unit, and the Vocational Shop unit, was performed by the Grand Lodge of Mason A F G A M, sponsored by the Ramah Lodge 165. The Honorable Harold Evetts, State Representative for this District, and Mr. Norton V. Gorman, El Paso County Superintendent of Schools were speakers at the ceremony. The Buildings were planned under the direction of Leonard C. Tarpenning, president of the Board, Manfred Vorenbcrg, vice-president, Dorothy Anne Pieper, secretary, Robert Haver, director, and Phyllis Kelly, treasurer. Holding office during its completion were Earenst Mikita, succeeding vice-president and Joseph Roskos, director. Ralph K. Calabrese, was the incumbent Superintendent of Schools, during the planning and erection of the additions. Masons are laying the comer stone Mr. Evetts, Colo. State Representative Supt. of Miami High School Mr. Gorman Spreading the mortar Leonard Tarpenning, Pres, of Board of Education Mr. Calabrese, Supt. of Calhan School Carl Marshbanks, Janet Dungan, Lois Kocerha, Chris Hendrickson, Mrs. DeWitt, Wilma Kelly, M ary In D earn. Barbie Paulson, Brenda Brenton, Debbie Nelson, Mary Manyik, Joan Beaman, Debbie Dyess, Abby Wills, Brenda Marshbanks, Sue Jones, Candy Pieper, Carolyn Ewert, Joyce West DEDICATION FOR A LIFE TIME GIVEN TO THE CAUSE OF EDUCATION: During the years they have been teachers in these schools, serving the needs of child- ren and youth with gentle wisdom and unfailing humor, giving of themselves that all might have the best gift of life: the opportunity to grow and to flourish and to reach out for the best that is in them. WE, THE STAFF OF THIS ANNUAL FOR 1972, RESPECTFULLY DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO THE MEMORY OF THE THREE TEACHERS OF THE CALHAN SCHOOLS WHO ARE RETIRING FROM SERVICE THIS YEAR. , Mrs. Floy DeWitt Mrs. Elna Fuchs Mr. Basil Churchill Ralph K. Calabrese MESSAGE TO SENIORS OF 1972 BUILD FOR CHARACTER-NOT FOR FAME - so says the motto you have adopted as a guideline for yourselves as you step across the threshold from youth to adulthood. It is a worthy motto and a guideline that will serve you well in the years to come. The world is full of those who have discovered that fame is fleeting— a will o' the wisp that vanishes into nothingness under the harsh winds of change—and, that is because this thing we call fame arises from outside of ourselves, it is the us that others see us as and, as such, is subject to the moods and vagaries of the moment. Character, on the other hand, is lasting and permanent--it is the us that, within ourselves, we know ourselves to be--and that is because character arises from within us. Character is the cornerstone upon which we erect the edifice of our lives. And, whatever we may have been, whatever we now are, and whatever we may hope to become, our character belongs to each of us uniquely—it is our own--we have built it: moment by moment, day by day, thought by thought, deed by deed, we have built it; and, must, of necessity, live with it each day, all the days of our lives. If you lay the cornerstone carefully and build the edifice true to the cornerstone, the time will come when the cornerstone and the capstone will be one and the same--the character you have built for yourself. I congratulate each of you on the building you have done thus far. In the nature of things, a part of us who have been privileged to touch your lives will go with you; and, a part of you who have been so much a part of our lives, will remain with us. Ralph K.
