MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS OF 1971 These are times when the new, the innovative, the experimental seem to be the dominant motif in our ideas and in our actions. We wheel restlessly upon and above the earth, at a loss for a place to put down our roots, uncertain of our purposes, our values, our goals. Without a sense of order, of dignity, or serenity we seem not to know, or have not thought, whether we are going or whether we shall find happiness for our harrassed souls. We have unsurpassed technology which has given us power of life and death over ourselves as well as over the whole of nature; we have lacked the wisdom to use this power beneficently. This is the great problem that faces you as the youth coming into its heritage: to create for yourselves a harmonious balance between the knowledge which gives power and the wisdom to use that knowledge in such a way that our lives will be in tune with the music of the spheres. This the knowledge that will lift you to serenity; this is the wisdom that will make you truly free. Keith Ververs, Principal I would like to quote from Eric A. Walker; This Graduation Ceremony marks the completion of an important phase of your life. It is an occasion in which all who know you can share in your sense of pride and accomplishment. No one has more pride in your accomplishment than the older generation. If you will look in the bleachers to your left and to your right, you will see some of the most remarkable people ever to walk the earth—people you might want to thank on this graduation night. These—your parents and grandparents—are the people who within just five decades have by their work increased your life expectancy by 50 percent—who while cutting the working day by a third, have more than doubled per capital output. These are the people who have given you a healthier world than they found; they have lived through history's greatest depression; many of them know what it is to be poor, what it is to be hungry and cold. These are the people who have fought man's grisliest war; they have had failures, yet they progressed. It is my hope, and I know that the hope of these two generations, that you find the answers to many of the problems that still plague mankind. It won't be easy. You won't do it by negative thoughts nor by tearing down or belittling. You may and can do it by hard work, humility, hope, and faith in mankind. Try It! 4
