When the education of the whole child was emphasized, it was not meant that the school was to do it all. The child's education in the fastest learning part of his life is at present clearly under the direction of his parents. But when he crosses the threshold of the school, the child's world is all too often cut into. Seniors, now that you have graduated and once again are crossing a new threshold of life, remember you have responsibilities that you inherit with this great and wonderful step. It will soon be up to you to educate your children to meet the threshold of education. As a parting word, I ask: DO NOT WASTE YOUR LIFE. Mr. Ralph Calabrese, Superintendent To the Graduates of Calhan High School May 21, 1970 Through all history man has been prone to attach great value to certain events in his life: we remember our birthdays; we celebrate anniversaries; we keep our holidays. The day of your graduation is one of these times. It symbolizes your step across the threshold from childhood to adulthood. The import of this giant step onward can hardly be exaggerated. The quality of life that will be yours as a person as well as the kind of life that will be ours as a nation rests in great measure on you and the quality of your ideals. Certainly you must keep foremost among these--a zest for learning, a respect for law, and a love of your fellow- man. Ralph K.
