Text from Pages 1 - 74 of the 1967 volume:

FOREWORD School memories are invaluable and desirous for all of us in years that are to come. Fate has decreed that oftentimes these memories so dear to us shall fade, wither, and almost die away. To so paint in words and picture the events of the year as to have them stamped for- ever upon our memories is the pur- pose of this book. May you always look back with pride to dear old CALHAN SCHOOL. standards of conduct and achievement. It is with heavy farewell—and God bless you. TO THE SENIORS: I offer my love and respect and my most sincere wish that life for each of you will be a fine and challenging experience. I am sure that as the years move on, you will find this book a source of Treasured Memories. Perhaps the class of 67 is just a bit of a special class for me, for with this class many of my dreams for Calhan High are solidly established and beginning to come true. I want to thank each of you for your own individual and special contributions toward this achievement. You have done so much to honor our school and to create new and better heart that I salute you--and say TO THOSE OF US WHO REMAIN BEHIND, we will meet the challenges of the future, and in meeting them grow into places left vacant by those who are departing. Let us resolve, here and now that, together, we will make the future even brighter than the present. May this book hold in trust for each of you fond memories of the life that you have lived in Calhan School, for such is the purpose of the BULLDOG. Donald E. Wright, Superintendent. BOARD OF EDUCATION Who with their untiring efforts help to make our school THE BEST Joe Maul, Dorothy Ami Pieper, Richard Lemesany, Albert Kobilan, Fred Vorenberg ANNUAL STAFF Sydney Pemberton, Mrs. DeWitt, Tommy Vorenburg, Roger West, Bruce Marley, Bobby Eurich, Ina Miller, Linda Mikita, Cheyril Warren, Darroll Maul, Cheryl Burt, Ivan DeWitt, Sharon Bodine, Pam Krohn, Rick Wellington We, the students of the Annual Staff, dedicate this annual to the Seniors of 1967. They are one of the largest clas- ses to graduate from Calhan High School. Because we know the senior year is one never to be forgotten, we hope these pictures will bring back memories for years to come. Always, i Sharon Bodine, Editor STUDENT COUNCIL L. to R. Karen Bearfoot, Debbie Kanuch, Rick Wellington, Connie Eurich, Kent Greenwood, Alan Balsick, Rick Freeman, Karen Dungan, George Fosha, Joan Pieper, Mr. Wright, Gary Guthrie, Sec. Bonnie Vorenberg, Pres. KitMarley, Vice Pres. Ivan DeWitt, Rep. Terry Nelson, Ina Miller During this school year, the Student Council has undertaken several worthwhile proj- ects. One of the most significant of these projects was the moving of the old bell from the site of the old Union High School building to the front of our present building. Dur- ing an assembly, this bell was set. It is kept locked, except on special occasions, it is unlocked and rung. The student council sponsored the Homecoming Dance and the Sweetheart Ball. These were occasions which will long be remembered by the students and patrons of the Calhan School. The Student Council was responsible for the Christmas treat, and for the film. Johnny Shilo, at the all school Christmas Party. At present, the Student Council and their sponsor, Mr. Wright, are working hard on a Handbook for the students of Calhan School. MR. First Place Float--Freshman Class Pbm Pon Girls and TWirlers Marching Second Place Float--Senior Class High School Band Marching in the Parade Homecoming was one of the largest events we had at Calhan this year. The parade was quite large because everyone cooperated to make it a very successful day. Various people in the town judged the floats and tried to pick the best one based on originality. The Lions Club fur- nished the trophies and awarded them at half time. -w. CLASSES JUNIOR HICH GIRLS PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS 37 Coach Ververs and Assistant Coach Hanson are in charge of the Physical Education De- partment of our school. Included in their responsibilities are Football, Basketball, Track, and Junior High and Senior High girls and boys P. E. classes. School spirit for sports originates in these classes. If it were not for sports in school, our time would be spent learning only from books. Athletic activities are important for one to have a well rounded education. We feel a great deal has been added by these two individuals to the betterment of Calhan School. ASSISTANT COACH HANSON AND COACH VERVERS P. E. Board The P. E. Board is a group of boys who make the rules for the athletic ball squads. There is a representative from each class, and a coach's representative who is a part of the Student Council. The Board was set up to form the rules that the players have to follow. Then it is their duty to see that each boy follows the rules. If a player is caught breaking the rules, the Board and coach decide his punishment. The P. E. Board is also a complaint department . If anyone objects to the rules or the coach's actions, they can talk to a P. E. Board representative. This individual then brings the complaint to the coach who will take time to recognize the complaint. The P. E. Board is designed to create a closer relationship between the coach and players.
