I : 1 . THE CALHAN BULLDOG 1966 Within these covers are records of school experiences that we hope will be pleasant memo- ries in the lives of Calhan Students for years and years. To our Board of Education: Because of your devoted and thoughtful efforts to better our school, we the students of the Annual Staff dedicate this annual to you. We hope it will bring you as much pleasure as it has brought us in assembling these never-to-be-forgotten memories. The Annual Staff Editor 'XJ Editor: Jeanie Eurich, Bus. Manager: Sharon Bodine, Snap Shots: Rosetta Eurich, Kathie Simmons, Sports: Kit Marley, Girls' Sports: Connie Ullom, Doreen Trojanovich, Photographers: Richie Simmons, Roger West, Advertising: Darroll Maul, Tommy Vorenberg 2 As the school year draws toward a close, we are reminded that many youth will leave our school to go out into the business world to make a place for themselves. Others will return in the fall to gather further knowledge. We, as teachers, are rewarded by the success of the youth whom we have help to educate. One cannot but wonder what the future holds for the fine youth in the Calhan community. I take this means to personally thank everyone who has had any part in the school program for the year. Especially do I express my deep gratitude to the children, who seem to be so appreciative of our guidance. Most important is to develop habits of careful planning and methodical procedure in wood con- struction . Teaching girls to cook, sew, and how to live with their fami- lies and society is one of the ways we develop Future Homemakers A Homemaker is one of the most important persons in the mould- ing of our nation. HOME ECONOMICS This year has seen great improvement in our library program. With the able assistance of Dorothy Kobilan, Vernon Patrick, and Pat Mitchell, we have taken a complete reorganization program. Calhan School was also fortunate to receive a Federal grant of $380 to provide extra books for the grade, Jr. High, and Sr. High libraries - my personal thanks to all who have helped to improve our library services. VERY BEGINNING OF HARLAN VAN SPROCK FIELD FIRST GAME PLAYED AT HOME FOOTBALL STARTED IN CALHAN WHAT IS FOOTBALL LIKE?? No doubt this was the question that ran through the minds of many Calhan community people. This question was probably the biggest in the minds of all the boys who were going out for this new sport. ( A new sport for Calhan) The first-year experience in football was exciting and different from all the other sports that Calhan had ever had. Being new at this sport, the players made a few silly mistakes that added humor to the games. Football went a lot deeper than just winning or losing a game; it was the result of many hours' practice everyday. Practice makes a team and we really had to practice hard in order to win. Every boy had to get into condition by running, doing push-ups and sit-ups, --just to mention a few. Blocking, tackling, running, and defensive and offensive playing all had to be learned. After the conditioning, came the heart of the practicing--the scrimmaging and putting what we had learned into use. As we put together everything we had learned, we soon had a team and one to be proud of. Along with football came an entirely new event--Homecoming. Each class was trying to build a better float than the other classes. Every student had a lot of fun building the floats. The Junior High float, a Stork standing on a football field and carrying a football, won first place. Now the many days the team had spent practicing was going to be shown in our first game. We lost our first game, and our second, but one day we had a victory over Fairplay. This win was the first of the three games. As players, we were proud of the backing we had. Whether we won or lost, we still had a lot of fans cheering us on. Roger West BULL DOGS IN ACTION Rodney- - Manager Vern Rick F.
