2 The Bulldog 19594960 Assembled by THE ANNUAL STAFF OF CALHAN HIGH SCHOOL Calhan, Colorado We, the members of the Annual Staff of the Calhan Bulldog, present this book. It is our sincere hope that, in the busy years ahead, you will occasionally find time to look through these pages and enjoy the beautiful memories that are bound by these covers. Dedication A flower unblown; a book unread; A tree with fruit unharvested. A path untrod; a house whose rooms Lack yet the heart's divine perfumes A landscape where wide border lies In silent shade 'neath silent skies; A casket with its gifts concealed— This is the year that for you waits Beyond tomorrow's mystic gates. May your school attitude, educational endeavors and social accom- plishments during your school years, be worth-while. We are living in a world of miracles, and because we are living in such a fast moving space epoch, there is ever a new day, a new horizon toward which you young people travel as you make your journey along life's thoroughfare. So, my good young people, if we are to vision tomor- row, let us start with this promise: anything is possihle in the future. We live in an atomic space age. Each of you remember that right here in Calhan is a starting point. You can start from here and go anywhere you want to go. Because we believe, we achieve. Keep believing! Keep achieving! Vision tomorrow as a world of miracles which will come to pass if you have faith, courage, and intelligence to make them real. Our purpose in education is to help the child develope to the fullest extent of his ability. Each child must be considered as an individual and not forced into rigid group classifi- cations. The curriculum should be developed to meet the needs of the child of this commu- nity and yet uphold the standards of the state and nation. Always the welfare of the child should be the important factor—not the teacher, the school, nor the curriculum. With this in mind, steady improvement in the standards, curriculum, and teachers within the school will be striven for. Many nice articles are made by the boys. IDEAS THAT HAVE INFLUENCED MODERN MAN Nine students from our school, together with twenty-six students from Kiowa, Arriba, and Simla, participated in a seminar this year. The seminar is designed to give students a panoramic view of education as offered in our institutions of higher learning. Junior and senior students who had shown a desire for learning over and above that which is offered in the high school classroom, and who have maintained above average grades were selected to attend these meetings. We devoted four or five sessions to each of five general subjects: literature, history, science, fine arts, and philosophy, with students from one school summarizing each unit. Because of its centralized loca- tion, we met once a week at Simla, at 7:00 p.m. Each meeting consisted of a one-hour lecture by a local or a guest speaker after which the students were allowed about an hour to ask questions and discuss the points presented by the speaker. At each final meeting, a panel discussion led by one of the schools was presented. These sessions were conducted entirely by students, and the ideas presented often brought lively discussion. Also during the course of the sessions we were shown films which pertained to the respective subjects, and we took some interesting field trips. All participants were given the College Differen- tial Aptitude Test and took two cultural quizzes. Those who have attended consider the seminar one of their most worth-while activities. There was a patrol car leading and a patrol car behind to stop the other cars. We turned north at the Warren Garage corner and marched past the post office. We then turned south at the bank corner and stopped. We played a couple of marchs. From there we marched back to school. At each stop our baton twirlers gave a short performance. Band day was not only enjoyed by the band members. The public enjoyed it also, for the streets were lined with people. Mr. Brewer, our band instructor, was in charge of this parade.
