A Word from the President. Over the years that I have been associated with Cal Poly (including times when I was advisor to the yearbook) this publication has taken many forms. A few years ago production of a student yoarbook was virtually abandoned as it has boon at somo other campuses. There was a feel- ing then that as an institution the yearbook might be somewhat out of step with the in- terests of graduating students. During the next few years, because some students felt the need for a similar publication, the office of the Dean of Students produced an annual publication called Pegusus. Last year the Associated Students revived El Rodeo as a campus year- book, and this year it has been continued as a publication of the Journalism Department. I am particularly pleased to hear of the enthusiasm with which this year's editorial staff have ap- proached their responsibilities. Tho yoarbook is an effective learning vehicle for students, es- pecially those in journalism, because it challenges development of their talents in graphics, writing, photography, and many other areas. It is good to know that the yearbook has come full circle and that this traditional publication will again be available to those students who value it as a remembrance of the times when they were active on this campus. A yoarbook is moro than just a momory book that will opon the past for seniors: it not only tells us whore we have beon, but as we look at a copy in later years, it lends the perspective to show us where we are. My congratulations to the editor and staff of the now El Rodoo on ronowing an important tradi- tion. Robert E. Kennedy. President 6-Pre«Wont's Message
