DEDICATION CHARLES E. MENDENHALL May 14,1920 to March 9,1977 The day never really ended for Charlie, whose personal and professional life was com- mitted to the needs of young people. Whether they needed personal counsel or advice on the conduct of club business, students who have known him over ten years have known that they could count on Charlie, regardless of the time of day-or the day of the week. He was always willing to provide encouragement, and challenged students to extend themselves beyond their past accomplishments. The best interests of young people, especially the students he worked with, seemed always to guide him. A number of Cal Poly Alumni are among the men and women throughout California who owe a large measure of their success as parents and citizens to Charlie. He called many of them my kids”, but all knew him as a friend that could be counted on for en- couragement. guidance, and. when needed, other kinds of support. The thirty years Charlie spent as a professional in agricultural communications (twenty at the Modesto Bee and ten at Cal Poly) brought him many honors. We dedicate this book to the continued memory of his commitment to the needs and interests of Cal Poly students.

Publishing the first yearbook since 1971 proved to be quite a task for the staff of the El Rodeo 1977. With only a short time to put the book together, the members of the staff and I spent many hard hours. Within the short amount of time and limited experience, we designed layouts, shot and developed pictures, and coordinated the senior photo sessions. We are now on our feet and next year we plan to in- clude more ASl-sponsored events and clubs in the year- book. It has been a rewarding experience to serve you as ASI President. Finance Chairman, and Editor of the yearbook. I hope returning students will continue the tasks of leadership in student government. STUDENT GOVERNMENT 4 J
