PRESIDENT’S MESSA GE One of the cherished traditions of almost every college in the United States and at Cal Poly is the publication of the yearbook which captures for all time the memorable events of the school year. This yeor s EL RODEO does just that. As you look through these pages you will review through pictures and the written word the activities of the 1963-64 school year—the athletic events, the College Union concerts and programs, drama produc- tions, Homecoming, Poly Royal, departmental and club activities, and o multitude of other events. Beyond that, however, this year’s Et RODEO captures that special and unique spirit which characterizes Cal Poly, its students, faculty and staff. Beneoth the surface there is that something extra which has been the key to the college's growth and the success of its students. Dedication to a known objective, personality, attitude and citizenship are all part of this something special which fills the pages of this book. As in all great societies, its leadership has risen from among the educated. In a world society as complex as ours, understanding of others is the first order of the day. I know of no other way understanding may come save through the influence of religion and education. Education—what a wonderful institution! Before us lie the keys to understanding. Let us accept our responsibility of being educated; edu- cated through the classroom for future occupations, through student activ- ities for better understanding of our fellow man, through student govern- ment os we help guide the destiny of our Cal Poly society. Whatever the interests of all the students, S.A.C. rep- resents them in passing upon budgets, handling A.S.B. funds, appointing boards and committees. Inter-Class Council helps to plan and organize inter-class activities. The main objective of this organization is to promote better understanding between classes, fellowship among students, and high morale for all. The main function of the Assembly Committee is to provide concerts for the student body. This past year we had The Brothers Four, Dick Gregory, and Vince Guaraldi. These functions were thoroughly enjoyed t y those who attended. By presenting better performances, the committee sought to moke more money to be used for more and better assemblies. The Assembly Com- mittee is also responsible for arranging the College Hour programs. The policies and criteria for awards are established by the Awards Committee. They rec- ommend students for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and designate the senior to be given the award of the Outstanding Mustang of the Year. Selection of this stu- dent is based on achievements during the academic year. The Awards Committee is also responsible for the recognition of students for their services to the student body. Poulo Connolly, Dr Don lowton. Advisor. This Committee, under the leadership of Steve Scofield, establishes policies and procedures for all student body code changes. It also processes all club and organization codes for final approval by the Student Affairs Council. Again this year it was necessary for the committee to review the entire constitution and code structure of the ASB, and to make a number of changes to bring the constitution and codes into agreement. The Dance Committee administers and schedules the all-college dances, and several times each year sponsors a campus Nightclub. The main function of the Donations Committee is to be responsible for processing applica- tions from student organizations who wish to sponsor donation drives. They are directly respon- sible to the Student Affairs Council. The Donation Committee also sees thot the profits from these drives are submitted to the correct pl6ces. DRAMA COMMITTEE The Drama Committee's main purpose is to provide entertainment for the student body. Through use of the Little Theater and plays, they can take their audiences almost anywhere. Under the leadership of Lorry Schwab, the Homecoming Committee, presented the alumni, faculty, students, and community with five of the most beautiful girls on the Poly Campus as Queen and Princesses of Homecoming. Organizing and presenting Homecoming is the prime function of the committee. They also handle publicity and arrange a year end report to present to the next year's committee. The Music Board of Control formulates all the policies for Cal Poly's music department, which is made up of the Women's Glee, Band, and the Collegians. If draws up the budgets, and finds ways to finance the various music tours throughout the year. To enable the students to enjoy their trips and activities is the goal of this Outings Com- mittee. Poly Royal is a busy time on campus and the Poly Royal Board has the responsibility of organizing and coordinating all activities. These activities include queen selection, departmental displays, dances, carnival, and the inter-collegiate rodeo. One of the most exciting groups in College Union is the Public Relations and Publicity Com- mittee. Their job is to advertise the College Union program and they do it by making posters, arranging photographic displays, writing newspaper articles, arranging radio and TV publicity, and promoting advertising stunts. The Personnel Committee aids committees in orienting new members to the College Union program. Welcome Week, an important part of Cal Poly life, gives new students a chance to get a head start in college work and student life by acquainting them with the College s educational offer- ings, its staff, activities, and philosophy. Welcome Week is sponsored by the Associated Student Body and the Student Personnel Division, and is divided into two phases. One is a camp program, run by a bunch of jolly nuts called Camp Counselors, and the other is a campus program. They occur simultaneously. BOSTROM Serving the needs of more than 2,500 students, Robert M. Bostrom is responsible for all of our on-campus housing and the students living here. Bostrom, a Cal Poly graduate, has been employed by the college for eight years. He has been Housing Co-ordinotor for four years, and before that, worked for three-and-a-half years as Graduate Manager. Originally from Pasadena, California, Bostrom graduated from Cal Poly as an Animal Hus- bandry major. He has had the equivalent of two college careers as a staff member at Poly. He currently lives on campus. His major hobby at present is student piloting. He maintains an active affiliation with the Naval Reserve and likes attending football games, watching plays, and listening to music. He enjoys working with people, a fortunate circumstance, as his work involves a close association with students. When asked what he thought of Poly students, he answered that he thought they were the friendliest, most mature, most courteous, and the best all-around students that he had ever come in contact with. The Cal Poly chapter was established in the spring of 1962 through the local Blue Key chapter. Membership is extended to twenty-five junior and senior class women, and is based on scholastic achievement and extra-curricular activities. Guards Ron Oxley and Terry Evans, end Gary Chilcott and halfback Paul Lewis were among those who saw limited action for the Green and Gold. But, the future looks bright.
