He initially served in the commissioning crew of the USS Picket CAGR-75 as Navigator followed by a short tour as First Lieu- tenant and Gunnery Officer in the activation and turnover to the Italian Navy of the USS Oyster Bay QAVP-285. In 1958 he was assigned as Executive Officer on the USS Cayuga County CLST-5293 home- ported in Guam. Following a nine-month course at the General Line School in Monterey, California, Commander Buck served consecutive tours as Engi- neer Officer on the USS McKean CDDR-7845 and Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron Twenty-three. In l964 he was assigned to the New York Naval Shipyard and was the senior Ship Superintendent of the last ship to be built there. On completion of the tour at the shipyard, he served as Executive Officer on the USS Power CDD-8395 in Mayport, Florida, and then completed a two-year tour in Hawaii on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief Pacific in the policy sec- tion of the Plans Division. Prior to his assignment as Commanding Officer of the USS- CACAPON CAO-523, Commander Buck served as Executive Officer in the commissioning crew of the USS Blue Ridge QLCC-195. Commander Buck is married to the former Marilyn Pender of Brooklyn. Com- mander and Mrs. Buck currently reside in Los Alamitos, California, with their two sons and two daughters. W.A.
