For the crew, after the long voyage from the Philippines, the three day stop-over at Pearl Har- bor, Hawaii was like medicine. For a sailor just back from many months in WESPAC, it felt so nice to Walk among Americans again. It was also the first chance he had to taste real Amer- ican food. Most of the men visited Honolulu and famous Waikiki Beach where they relaxed and took life easy. The USS Arizona Memorial, below, enshrines the famous battleship sunk by the Japanese during their attack on Pearl Harbor. The memorial is inscribed with the names of the 1177 men who went down with the ship.
