A good defense and no offense is the best way to describe the 1974 Byron Tigers' Football Season. The final record for the Tigers ended up a disappointing 1-9 overall mark and 1-8 last place finish in the con- ference standings. Co-captains this year were Terry Zilliox and Marty Brantner. Bob Ashelford was chosen most valuable player and Rick Toops the most improved. Ashelford was also chosen to the all-conference team along with Ron Brown. Lena-Winslow We 3 They 8 Rockridge 0 26 Mt. Randy Roberts led the defense with 99 tackles. The backfield consisted of three enthusiastic freshmen- -Doug Reber, Jeff Johnson, and Brain Hoglund; also sophomore running back Chuck Anderson and quarter- back Dave Zoet, who completed 50 of 126 passes for 880 yards. Doug Flohr and HOMECOMING COURT L TO R: Freshmen Cindy Rolston and Leif Lindgren; Sophomores Cindy Reimer and Scott Spencer; Queen Laurie Swanson and King Doug Flohr; Seniors Karen Parks and Marty Brantner; Juniors Lori Hamer and Brad Kufalk. 12 A mad rush for paper napkins, chicken wire, and haywagons; the biting, kicking, and squealing, of the girls' football game; and the seldom-heard sound of a locker door, all describe the week be- fore homecoming. The major events were the bonfire, preceded by the exhausting and bruising snake dance; the vicious and brutal football game Friday........ we lost ; and of course the big BIG Dance! The theme. Rock Around the Clock, was different and nice. Everyone danced, and relaxed although the guys and girls were barely recognizable in their coats and dresses, or dresses and coats?! At 10:00 was the coronation of the King and Queen, Doug Flohr and Laurie Swanson, and the presentation of the Court: Senior Attendents, Karen Parks and Marty Brantner; Juniors, Lori Hamer and Brad Kufalk; Sophomores Scott Spen- cer and Cindy Reimer; and Freshmen, Cindy Rolston and Leif Lindgren. German Club Stunt- First Place 13 SCHOOL PLAY 14 Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasion Chalk Circle was presented on Nov. 7 and 8 this year by a cast consisting of sophomores, juniors, and a first grader as well as seniors. Representing a refreshing change in the trend of Byron drama- tics, The Caucasion Chalk Circle was much more than the usual simple farce. The play incorporated music, drama, and serious social comment along with comedy. The huge cast did an exceptional job with Lucy Debnam and Jeff BiMeter turning in fine lead performances as Grusha and Simon. Julie Blake handled the task of narrator with Debbie and Darcie Frye accompanying on guitar. Supporting roles were held by Val Cline, Mike Mallory, Randy Herbig, Robb Jacobsen, Laurie Swanson, Kathy Cacciatore, Rick Hahn, Don Brown, and Arthur Debnam. 15 16 . VARSITY BASKETBALL The Byron Tigers did not have the success they had hoped for, being able to come up with only 5 victories compared to 18 losses. However, they were able to get a share of the glory at the Durand Holiday Tournament with a consolation championship. Jim Tilbury was chosen as M.V.P. and Jeff Meline was elected Captain. Both boys were accorded these honors as sophomores, which leaves promise for the future of B.H.S. varsity basketball. Playing for the last time for Byron this year were seniors Bill Tilbury, Rick Toops, Randy Dietrich, and Jeff Hogan. We They We They Ashton 59 45 S.V. 45 60 S. A 17-5 overall record and a 10-4 conference mark attests to the blend- ed offense of height and ball handling and the good defense of the Fresh- Soph team. David Zoet led in scoring with 265 points followed by Jeff Cunning- ham with 204, Steve Norup with 194, and Doug Reber with 179. Cunning- ham grabbed 154 rebounds and Norup 151. This is the first season with more wins than losses, which is quite outstanding since the team has had only four years of experience. Outstanding seniors were Mike Mallory, 132 lbs., who received a second at district and at sectional, but could not place at the state meet; and Tim Meeker, 138 lbs., who supplied the crowd with many exciting moments and ended the season with a 13-8-1 record. Mike compiled a 26-5-0 total and was selected most valuable wrestler. Mike and Tim were chosen 1974-75 team captains. Two outstanding individuals in fresh-soph action were freshmen Frank Johnson and Dan Wilmarth. At 119 pounds, Johnson won 12, lost 5, and tied 1 of his 18 matches. Wil- marth, 126 pounds, compiled a 12-6-0 record. Next year we will lose many wrestlers to the varsity level, but we are expecting an even stronger team be- cause of junior high training. 21 FRONT ROW L TO R: J. Clubb, D. Koenck, K. The J.V. team was able to compile a perfect 10-0 record for the second year in a row. For the varsity, an 11-2 record overall wasn't perfect, but their 7-0 conference performance was. The royalty to be honored that night were Queen Dea Sugden and King Marty Brantner. The post-prom activities were much quieter than in previous years, perhaps because of the legions of chaperones that were present. Dancing at the post-prom was to the music of Blizzard. The Tigers finished in a tie for fourth place in the Mid- Northern Conference with a record of 1 win and 7 losses. The baseball team voted Mike Landis team captain and Jim Landis the MVP. Although the team didn't do as well as anticipated, the prospects for summer, '75 are very good. The Tigers lost only four seniors and will have nine returning players combined with several rookie freshmen. PLAYERS AB R H AVG.
