as , Three, Two, One--The clock ran down, the buzzer sounded, and the Byng crowd went wild. Such was the scene at the vast majority of the lady Pirate Basketball games during the '87-88 season. But that kind of success did not come easily. The Byng ladies worked hard all summer, practicing and repracticing. When school started, the women were at the gym by at least 8:00 a.m. each morning preparing for the next contest. And when the post season tournaments started, they added an after school m practice to their schedule. But such persistence, along with the senior leadership of Elizabeth Willis and Tonya Montin paid off The ladies racked up some 27 victories during the season. 'F Head Coach Rocky Clarke stated, I am extremely 'Ni Q. proud of this team's effort. They always gave maximum effort. The Sta te Tournament was truly a Day by Day struggle. Nothing came easy for the Pirates during the post season. But both the men and ladies battled to the Friday semi-finals. The boys battled Hugo to the last second but lost by three. The ladies struggled against Jay but lost a heart breaker. The '88 state tournament appearance was the third straight for the Pirates. Both head coaches commented on the quality of their players and their willingness to compete. Top Left: Peggy Henley grabs the rebound while Kim Carter and Tonya Montin struggle against Deer Creek.
