At the end of the fourth grade yeaig all ofthe instruments in the band were demonstrated to the students. In order for the students to know the number of instruments allowed for each section, the director ga ve them a complete instrumentation list for the concert band. When school began in the Qll, director Rozzie Purdy approved their instrument selections. As the students begin their study, emphasis is given to correct posture, correct hand position and proper mouthpiece placement. Each of the three tamilies of instruments: brass, woodwind and percussion, are discussed in detail. The students work out of two books. Band Today and Technic Today . The band rehearses Monday through Thursday and has a weekly audition in which each student receives a grade and a chair placement in his section. The students are also graded on a weekly practice cant however the quality of practice time is emphasized the same as the quanity of practice time, The band is preparing for several concerts and a contest in the spring. The contest includes full concert band solos and ensembles. Band also teaches lihh grade students responsibility, dependability and self discipline. 'Students possessing these qualities will not only be good band students but also good students in all of their classes, Miss Purdy says. Different styles of music are also studied so the student will have a broader knowledge of all kinds of music. Music is the universal language of mankind and should be studied and enjoyed at an early age.
