ELEMEN TAR Y PRINCIPAL EMPHASIZES S TUDEN TXPAREN T IN VOL VEMEN T My first year as an elementary principal has been enjoyable, productive, and rewarding. Through the combined effort of seventeen Gculty members for grades two through four, students ha ve stayed in- volved in school affairs and achieved academically. First, two new programs ha ve proved the students more individual attention. A supplemental math class to reinforce classroom instruction was taught by entry- year teacher Mrs. Kathy LoHon. Addi- tionally, the classroom teachers used the Computer Lab to maintain skills introduced to students in the classroom. Two musical productions coordinated by elemen- tary music director Kathy Lokon involved all 289 elementary students: At Thanksgiving, students generous contributions of food filled nine baskets. In March, students collected and donated over J2000 to jump-Rope- for-Heart, a unified AHA effort coordinated by janice Hobbs. In April, two fourth graders Lori Starkey and Austin Orphan won the first Byng Direct Pee Wee Spelling Contest. Four awards assemblies honored students who were scholastic achievers as well as those with perfect attendance. Throughout the entire year, parents stayed in close contact with the teachers and me. Day 1 in 7th Grade I tear through the hall trying to remember where my locker and next class is. I finally find my locker the minute the bell rings for class. Digging through the books and notes to find the books that I need, I find that one book that has been hiding from me. I slam my locker closed and go with the flow of the crowd to my classroom, which, thank- goodness, is nearby. I ease into my seat so that I am not noticed by the teacher who is starting to take role call. I must look uptight because one of my friends whispers across the isle, Relax, this teacher isn't as strict as the last one we had. Iinally, lunch time! We raced up the hill only to find all the lines reached the door. Seeing that the regular line was moving Easter, we choose it. Aker waiting for what seemed like a life-time, we received our trays. We found a table and began eating when we noticed that it was already time to go back to class. We wolfed down our last bites and raced back down the hill to start all over again with trying to find books and classes in this new world. Renee? I am sure that there will be a lot of ad- justments to make. Having a different teach- er and room for e a c h c la s s might be fun, getting through the hall to your locker and then to your room in five minutes will be difficult, but Ill get the hang of it. With all the books and papers for each class, it will be hard keeping up with them. Even though seventh grade sounds hectic and challenging, I am looking forward to getting there.
