It provides a link between family and crew while they receive services which are professional and flawless. During their service in the Mediterranean, the Postal Clerks have handled approximately 129,418 pounds of incoming and outgoing mail and managed $79,120 in stamps and money order sales. Postal audits and inspections are never less than outstanding while the quality of service is never less than perfect. PCI Gonzales' experienced supervision together with SIY Hernandez's assistance enforced the reputation of the Post Office's excellence. Their training of proper procedures for packaging and mailing articles demonstrated their concern for crew's mail. Working as much as 18 hours per day was not unusual and providing mail for other ships was also routing. PCI Gonzales ensured that all regulations were enforced and many times went out of his way to manage mail. The recommendation of mail call inspired the crew's morale to keep going and many times crewmembers furnished a helping hand bringing mail onboard. The Post Office provided special services; Certified, Registered, and Insured Mail. Money orders were sold ensuring the crew paid necessary bills or sending money home when mail was prepared at a moments notice to allow going out a day earlier. All mail that came in was monitored and surveyed to provide information for efficiency of the mail system. PCI Gonzales and SN Hernandez offered superb mail service available to everyone onboard and to the Fleet. It was more than just a job providing stamps, it was the ultimate satisfaction serving YOU! 53 ffivulD PCI hard at work. ■ iBT mm Storekeeper I ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ OPERATIONS 56 QM1 Jackson charting course for Augusta. When I set sail I bring you with me. Your warmth and love are here. She will guide me, and protect me. She will bring me home. The work you did, the watches you stood, the ammunition you moved, the cargo you delivered, are all represented here. The book would not be possible without the people who made its contents meaningful. It is also appropriate because the memories that stay with you the longest will be those of the Sailors you served with. Long after the liberty stories, the bad weather, and the fatigue of this journey are forgotten, you will remember, above all else, your shipmates. I hope that the future affords you the rest and comfort you deserve, and quiet moments in which to reflect on the contents of this book. I also hope it offers you the opportunity to succeed at any challenge you chose to accept. Fair winds to you all. D. F. Smith Commanding Officer Strike the pose . . .
