The silhouetted helicopter represents our vertical replenishment capability. The butte in the background is emblematic of our name and relation with Butte. Montana. The chain which encloses the insignia is symbolic of our vital link with the combatant forces and BUTTE'S capability to deliver ammunition around the world and around the clock. The four stars in the bottom half of the circle represents BUTTE’S previous administrative assignment to Commander, Service Squadron Four: the two above, her administrative assignment to Commander. Service Squadron Two and her primary assignment under the operational control of Commander, Second Fleet. The total of six stars is emblematic of her primary area of deployment, the Mediterranean, under the operational control of Commander, Sixth Fleet. The color scheme is elementary. The partial circles above and below the ship along with the butte in the background are RED indicating the ever present danger, surrounding BUTTE. in the handling of explosive materials. YELLOW is the color of the chain and sky providing the constant reminder of the caution to be used in handling ammunition. The area below the ship is BLUE representing the ability to be on any sea for the delivery of ammunition to the fleet. Ammunition ships don’t maneuver like tin cans”, but to this man command maneuvers are like riding a horse, (see page 23) Captain Vernon L. Rosson. USN is a native of Southeast Texas. He graduated from Lamar University in Beaumont. Texas, in I960, and attended graduate school at the University of Texas until November. 1961 when he entered Officer Candidate School al Newport. Rhode Island, receiving his commission as an Ensign in April. 1962. Captain Rosson has served as Mine Counter Measures Officer. USS WOODPECKER (MSC-209): Operations Officer. USS CROMWELL (DE-I0I4): Communications Officer. COMCRUDES- FLOT ELEVEN; Commanding Officer, USS PLEDGE (MSO-492); and Ex ecutive Officer. USS SYLVANIA (AFS-2). He also received a degree in Communications Engineering from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey. California and attended the Command and Staff course at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Captain Rosson is married to the former Louise Carolyn Lakie of Port Arthur. Texas. USN, is a native of Craigmont, Idaho. He was graduated with a BA in English from the University of Washington in June, 1963 and joined the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps took him to Bogota, Colombia for two years. He entered Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, in August. 1966. He was commissioned as an Ensign in December of that year. Commander KAUFFMAN served as Combat Information Center Officer. USS DAMATO (DD-871): Engineering Officer. USS WHIPPLE (FF-1062); and Engineering Officer. USS WICHITA (AOR-I). He was Operations Officer. COMDESDIV 102; Counterinsurgency Officer and Briefing Officer (Spanish English). COMUSNAVSO COMFIFTEEN in the Canal Zone; and Organization Development and Management Officer. HUMRESMANDET. Yokosuka. Japan. Commander KAUFFMAN also attended the Brazilian Naval War College at Rio de Janeiro for a year. Commander KAUFFMAN was awarded the Navy Commendation Metal for his performance in USS WICHITA. Commander KAUFFMAN served as the Executive Officer of USS BUTTE (AF-27) from January 1981 until June 1982. Commander KAUFFMAN married the former Mary Jean SHARP while he was stationed in the Canal Zone. They have a daughter. Anne, and a son. Earl, and reside in Shrewsburg. New Jersey. EDITORS NOTE: Trying to capture Commander Kauffman on film was a hard task to accomplish but to capture him on film wearing a smile was harder. l 5 cctte The USS BUTTE is one of the Navy's newest ammunition ships. Her mission is to deliver missiles and ammunition to the units of the fleet at sea, providing the bombs, projectiles, missiles, torpedoes, mines, and other expendable ordnance required by the Navy's combatant ships to fight the enemy from the sea and with the aircraft of our carriers. This role is based on the concept of seapower developed seventy-five years ago by the American Naval strategist and historian. Alfred Thayer Mahan. Mahan defined seapower as the ability to transport men and supplies across the world’s oceans freely, control of the sea when access is opposed by other nations, and the denial of the sea by enemies. The era of the space age has not diminished the importance of seapower or its value as an intellectual force. Today 97% of all the world's trade moves on the sea. The sea still remains the only means in our present state of technology of projecting the power of many men and much material to other continents, linking the United States to the rest of the Free World. This year BUTTE can be proud to say she was part of the longest chain of supplies shipped around the world, receiving supplies from the United States and transporting them to units of the Seventh Fleet in the Indian Ocean. BUTTE was also the first ship to rearm another ship, this year, with the Harpoon Missile. In the event of war the importance of the sea is readily apparent. Ships, because of their mobility, are not the accessible targets that shore bases are. But because of the Navy's freedom to travel these vast sea roads and its ability to range close to the enemy, attack becomes more accurate, and weight is added to its offensive powers. USS BUTTE, because she is infact a floating ammunitions depot, eliminates much of the Navy's dependence on the shore bases. In order to rearm themselves, the Navy’s combatant ships need not risk the danger or waste the time to return to unmovable shore depots. The BUTTE will be out at sea, equipped with the latest and fastest methods of underway replenishment, so that ships can get their needed ammunition on the line” or at prearranged rendezvous points to disperse themselves as quickly as possible. 6 S ife The most recent developments in ammunition and missle transfer are incorporate in the BUTTE. The system, which uses a ram tention wire between ships, is called STREAM. Stream rigs will be utilized to transfer ammunition of all sorts to two ships alongside simultaneously, up to speeds of 20 knots. The hazards involved in such an evolution are readily apparent when it is realized that the ship on either side of BUTTE is often less than one hundred fifty feet from BUTTE during rearming operations. Vertical replenishment capabilities are provided by two CH-46 cargo helicopters which will take off with a load of ammunition, deposit it on a ship to be replenished, and return for yet another load, while the other helicopter may be replenishing yet another ship at the same time. Preparation and Coordination are a must and is often the job of many individuals working as a team. With a full load displacement of 19,000 tons, BUTTE has the SIZE, SPEED, and CAPABILITY to safely rearm four ships simultaneously, thus providing an urgently required contribution to the logistic support of the fleet. QM2 MOORE QM2 MOORE One of the first things one must remember about Pakistan is that it is a Muslim nation, and their customs differ from our own and should be honored. The most respected objects in Pakistan are the Mosques, which are religious temples and should be treated as such. Photographing Mosques and other holy places is permitted, but permission should be obtained first. Engaging in conversation with a Muslim woman on the streets is prohibited by religious beliefs. Taking pictures of Muslim women is an excepted practice, but permission should be obtained from her male companion first. 22 23 Commo. DET 14 consists of three EOD technicians (Lt MURRAY. BMC HOWARD, and GMT3 GILLIS) and one scuba diver (BM3 ROBERTS). The mission of an EOD DET embarked aboard an AE is to reduce the hazard of foreign and domestic convential. nuclear, chemical, biological and improvised explosive ordnance. To this end. EOD personnel are trained in a variety of diving systems and methods of explosive demolition. In the event deployment of an EOD detachment to a remote area is required, technicians are qualified at their option as Naval Parachutists. Each ship to transit the great SUEZ has to pay the price according to it's tonage. but it sure beats the time and cost factor, not to mention the dangers of the trip around the Cape of Good Hope. Eatontown. and the state of NEW JERSEY. Captain AZZOLINA. Captain Joseph AZZOLINA. USNR. transitted the SUEZ last year with BUTTE. he is the President of the Middletown area FOOD TOWN super market chain, and serves as NEW JERSEYS CHAIRMAN to the NAVY RECRUITING DISTRICT. Captain AZZOLINA also is the NATIONAL Director of the NAVY League Recruiting Committee and Chairman of the Battle- ship NEW JERSEY BB-62 Committee. In addition to his military activities. For centuries, mankind has sailed across the Equator and each time he has paid his respects to the mythological god of the sea. NEPTUNUS REX. more commonly known as KING NEPTUNE. The earliest encounters with NEPTUNE were related as vigorous attempts at testing the crew to determine what they were made of. The seasoned sailors were to be known as SONS OF NEPTUNE, referred to today as SHELLBACKS. Those who have not yet tasted the waters of NEPTUNE are to be known as POLLYWOGS. Although the physical discomforts may be intially unpleasant, the initiation is not difficult and the entire ceremony is carefully watched over by KING NEPTUNE and his court pictured on these two pages.
