THE 1983 REBEL S. R. Butler High School 3401 Holmes Avenue Huntsville, Alabama 35805 The 1983 Rebel Is Dedicated to Mr. Edward E. Seal, Principal This book is dedicated to Mr. Ed Seal, in appreciation for his dedication to the school, student body and each individual. For encouraging each person at Butler High to develop himself to the greatest extent his potential will allow, we thank him. “Respect is felt for those giving respect. Sacrifice and special effort breed respect. Time nt helping V others without obligation has meaning beyond words. Anyone that may achieve these qualities is held in the highest regard.” Ill WE Love You! Mr. Edward E. Seal graduated from Butler in 1953. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree and his Master of Arts Degree at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Mr. Seal became principal at Butler in August, 1975. He enjoys working with the students and faculty, and he has said: “Students at Butler High School comprise the greatest student body in the United States, and it has always been, and will be, an honor to be their principal.” 3 After all these years 4 • • • Pride, Spirit, and Togetherness Still Live On TABLE OF CONTENTS STUDENT LIFE......6 FEATURES.........42 SENIORS..........82 JUNIORS.........126 SOPHOMORES......144 FRESHMEN........162 FACULTY.........176 ORGANIZATIONS .... 194 SPORTS..........238 ADS.............282 INDEX...........300 EDITORS Kathy Hanvey and Candie Brown PHOTOGRAPHY Jeanne Picht Bob Burruss, Editor Winkie D’Agostino Stanley Koryta Beth Kembert FEATURES Laura Monroe, Editor Ricky Sauls David Graham CLASSES Camille Jones Angela Milford Sharon Humphries ORGANIZATIONS Jerry Threet, Editor Kyle Hall Lohra Flynn BUSINESS MANAGER Toney Baasen STUDENT LIFE Annette Daugherty. It is a basic need of each individual, and we all feel this togetherness, be it in the classroom, during lunch, or out on the weekends. This quality makes it quite evident we are all Butler Rebels. Academics are not all that high school has to offer; fun with friends, deciding where to go from here, and feeling a sense of belonging helps each of us in our struggle to grow up. Being a student at Butler makes each person one in a great crowd, but each student still manages to remain an in- dividual. Whether it is the way one dresses, the way one talks, or just the way one looks, this ability to be an in- dividual while being a part of the whole is one reason for the togetherness of the student body as a whole. 7 Student Life JC 13 We the Are b R e e s 18 There’s No Togetherness Like Rebel Togetherness 24 26 Restaurant 32 34 Butler Wins Double Homecoming Over Huntsville Traditionally, the student body is proud of its beauties and outstanding personalities. Each year the Homecoming Court, Who’s Who, and Class Favorites are elected by popular vote. Thus, the students have a voice in recognizing their peers for their beauty, intellect, enviable character traits and notable abilities. Senior Huong Nguyen won a $500 award for excellence in art in the United Insurance Company of America Contest and her art work will be reproduced on the 1983 calendar by that company. She also won second place and an additional $500 in the Martin-Weber Na- tional Art Competition. 2. Winning “Best Actor” for his performance in the one-act play, “The Charge is Murder” at the Walter Trumbauer Competition at UAH is just one of Senior Kyle Hall’s accomplishments in theater. He is a member of the Triskellion Mime Company and the Interna- tional Thespian Society. Kyle plans to attend the University of Texas to major in Law and to minor in drama. 3. In summer, 1982, Senior Woomi Chase, an avid judo enthusiast, won fourth place in the Senior Women’s Division of the National Junior Olympics at Memphis State University in Memphis, Ten- nessee. To qualify for the nationals, she won first place in both district and regional competition. 68 Have Flair 2-3. Suzanne Long began modeling at the age of 10. She modeled for Sears and Touch of Class charm school. After graduation Suzanne will further her career in modeling as a model for cosmetics. F W' Dean Cox, Diane Dotson, Theodora Bone, and Mike Cote were awarded the USNMA mathemetics award for the 1982-83 school year. This award is given to students who do exceptionally well in the field of mathematics. Rebels Have a Touch of Class Butler has fashion and here is the proof. Fashion is very important. The way a person looks can affect the way people think of them. This year Butler was proud to have several girls on teen boards from Pizitz, Pari- sian, and Dunnavant’s. Modeling from left to right are Lawanda Mosley, Pam Muery, Eva Applegate, Sarah Thorne, Michelle Maderra, Deidre Horton, Sherry Houston. Butler’s Exchange Students 1. Kim Holsclaw This year Butler sent sophomore, Kim Holsclaw, to Medellin, Colombia as our exchange student. Out of eight ex- change students from Huntsville, Kim is the only one from Butler. While Kim was in Medellin, she kept up her studies and was prepared for her classes when she returned. Kim has always wanted to travel and get a first-hand experience of other countries, and their cultures. 2. Marcela Navanjo This year’s foreign exchange student is Marcela Navan- jo. She is from Medellin, Colombia. She attended Butler since the beginning of the second semester and found it very different from Colombian schools. Marcela said that schools here are much easier because of less homework and more free time. She also enjoyed the freedom to choose the courses she wished to take, which is a privilege she does not have in Colombia. She found living in the States very enjoyable, and that everyday appliances, such as microwaves, make life much more comfortable. After her arrival, she enjoyed several social events, such as con- certs of Billtj Squier and Petra. 71 Tacy Singleterry L This Year’s Butler Belle 75 National Achievement Semi-Finalist John Dove D.A.R. Good Citizen Thomas Gates Spirit is a key word in the everyday life of a Butler student. This spirit is shown in the crowds at athletic events, at assemblies, and even in basic, everyday routines. This spirit makes being a Butler Rebel very special. CLASSES 82 w hat It’s Like To Be a Senior! Being a senior is like nothing else! It’s great! After eleven years (or more) of hard work, we’ve finally made i( to the top of the totem-pole. And that’s really something to be proud of! Especially because we are seniors of Butler High School. At times, the years looked so far away, but now. look- ing back, it seems like yesterday we were starting first grade. This is an important year for each of us in many ways. This year we have to decide which way we want our futures to go. Some of us will go to college, some to work, some of us will join the services, and some of us will get married. All of these are important decisions which should be made during our senior year. With the love and guidance of our parents, our teachers, and our friends, we’ll make the right decision. It’s been great sharing these years with you. This past year has been the best of all! I wish you the best of luck in whatever you do! God Bless You! Melissa Newman P.S. See you at the reunion! The careers of each spanned thirty and one-half years. Throughout her career, Mrs. Roper taught biology, chemistry, general science, and physical education. Miss Harris taught various business subjects. They were both known for their great kindness and their ability to teach. According to many former students and colleagues, they were both unique teachers, some of the best who have taught at Butler through the years. There are many students who have grown to know and to love them. From all of us at Butler, Mrs. Roper, Miss Harris, we wish you a very happy life in the future. 193 Being a Rebel is not just going to school, or even simply making good grades. These are a part, but there is more to it, such as participating in an extra curricular event, or just making one friend- ship that will last throughout the years. Pride is an attitude, a feeling, a participation in any school activity. Each one of us is proud to call himself a Butler Rebel. This is shown by going to any of the games, by representing the school at some competition, or by attending classes. The purpose of DECA is to develop respect for education which will contribute to occupational competence, and to promote understanding and appreciation for the respon- sibilities of citizenship in our free, competitive enterprise system. The program of activities stems from four areas: leadership development, vocational understanding, civic consciousness, and social development.
