Miss Jean Hollingsworth — Sponsor Bonnie Pike - Editor Betty Deuel - Business Manager Georgia Keel - Art Editor [ 1 ] [ 5 ] Here it stands-a material structure A tribute in wood and stone. Hundreds have shared this cherished place Yet each calls it his own. These towering walls, the sheltering halls, And the spirit within that door. How many times we’ve walked these halls! (We’ll walk them just once more.) And like the clouds above We’ll lift our ideals high; And echo with each whispering breeze “We love thee, BUTLER HIGH.” A typical day in class Welcome to our office. The Rebels march on. iV v - 44 « ' Preparing for the Homecoming parade. [ 5 ] Come on Rebels, yell. Go team fight. 1 1 T hc year 1963 has meant many things to each individual. We, as Seniors, .looked forward to lyRyis year as in the past, but this year was different; for this was to be our lost. Some f us y W leave for college campuses while others leave to make homes. But those of us who have 7 shared wonderful times here will leave with both the feeling of excitement that comes with 'j a new challenge and the feeling of rogret that comes with the leaving of an old friend. We have filled this book with people we have known, things we’ve done and the happy and sad days we’ve shared. As we look back through this book some of the memories may be dim or fading, but they will never be forgotten. t 3 acu TJuLL o (Contents - We, the REBEL STAFF of 1963, proudly dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Catherine Roper, os a token of our appreciation for the superb services she has rendered to us as a student body and to BUTLER HIGH SCHOOL. The REBEL wishes to express its deep appreciation to our be- loved teachers who have so willingly given of their time and talents to inspire in many students a love for know- ledge and an understanding of the principles for which BUTLER stands. Superintendent Dr. Raymond L. Christian ddourd oj? Education Milton Frank, L.A. Davis, Dr. Raymond L. Christian, A.V. Sneed, Jarmon McKinney, Jr., Marvin Drake. [ 10 ] Dear Student Body: You have demonstrated a willingness to work, a desire to learn and an attitude of helpfulness. These outstanding qualities, indicative of great progress, are recognized by all who observe our school and its records. In our daily contacts I find great pleasure. WrJeffC. Vaughn Since Coming to Butler two years ago as our assistant principal, Mr. Vaughn has assumed an important role in our school. Although his task is that of maintaining a good scholastic and attend- ance record for our school, he always takes an active interest in the student as an individual. Mr. Vaughn attended the University of Alabama and the University of Louisiana where he has completed his B.S. and thirty-two hours toward his M.S. His honors included the Dean’s list, Delta Sigma Phi, Theta Kappa Psi, National Chemical Society, Y.M.C.A. Secretary, and the Student Fellowship. W . JiL Mrs. Stewort has been at Butler for six years. She teaches IOth grade English and serves as guid- ance counselor, too. As guidance counselor she has helped us prepare for our futures, whether our paths lead to college or vocations. Her work in helping us prepare for fuller and happier lives is greatly appreciated. Sometimes we do not realize all the work Mrs. Wallace does for our school. We surely owe her a great deal. Besides her work here at Butler, she has a few hobbies ot home such as cross- word puzzles, gardening and the care of her two dogs. Mrs. Wallace is certainly an asset to our school. Her neat appearance and cheerful dis- position contribute a great deal toward making our school days successful and happy. This is our FACULTY Who help us in all we do. We ought to thank them And give credit where credit is due. They have stood by and been there When we needed them most With such a great faculty We all should boast! MRS. MARY BURKHARDT B.S. WOOLF B.A. University of Alabama English “Welcome....to Butler. Jo the Jacult Before we, the graduating class of 1963, bid farewell to the hallowed halls of Butler High School, we wish to express our appreciation to you, the faculty. It was a big step from the childhood of our junior high years to the young adulthood of our first senior high year; yet from that first day three years ago we knew that you would help us meet each and every test with determination. You stood by us and aided us in all that we attempted. You were always ready and willing to lend us your assistance, even though it often meant hours of extra work for you. You have watched over us, guarded us, tried to protect us, and encouraged us. From you we have received strength, love, faith, joy, knowledge, hope, and trust in ourselves and God. The heavy doors swing shut bringing to a close our wonderful high school days, and the last sands sifting through the hour glass tell us that this period of our lives is rapidly coming to a completion. Before the door closes and the sands vanish, we, the class of 1963, bid farewell to you with the desire in our hearts that we may live in such a way that you will have reason to be proud of us. All Rebel tallies were scored in the second half. Glenn Wallace scored in a thrilling 98 yard run on the opening kickoff of the second half. Later. Jerrell Moon, ALL-TVC back, rambled 48 yards for the second Rebel score, and Kenneth Guthrie tallied on a spectacular 85 yard kickoff return. Bob Buchholz, ALL-TVC guard, blocked an attempted Cullman extra point and played an outstanding offensive game os well. GADSDEN 13 BUTLER 18 The Rebels came back fighting in their second game of the season. The Rebels allowed the Gadsden Tigers an early touch- down and stopped them for the rest of the first half on the fine defensive play of Dickie Crutcher, Billy Lawrence, David Reeder, and Marion King. The Rebels scored with only seconds left in the first half but missed the extra point. The Tigers came back and scored midway the third period, and the Rebels match- ed it but again missed the P.A.T. with 28 seconds left in the game. The Rebels trailing by one point, Ronnie Puckett, Rebel quarterback, stepped out one way as the other backs went another. Sensing his mistake, Puckett tucked the ball under his arm and outraced the defenders around left end for the winning score. DESHLER 12 BUTLER 12 The Rebels evened their record at one win, one loss, and one tie with a 12 - 12 deadlock with the Deshler Tigers. Butler scores came on runs by Ronnie Puckett and Jerrell Moon. Outstanding line play was turned in by Phillip Sullivan, Dickie Crutcher, and John D. Hone. DECATUR 46 BUTLER 0 Inspired by homecoming game and a possible TVC championship and, aided by costly Rebel errors, the Decatur eleven ran up a 46 - 0 victory to hand the Butler team its second loss against one win and a tie. [ 103 ] BUTLER 12 FOmf LL H m GM ATHENS 0 Unable to get its offense clicking in the first half of this home- coming contest at Huntsville Stadium, Butler came bock the second half and scored two touchdowns. Cal Elliott crossed the double strip after racing 37 yards, and Jerrell Moon bulled from the one into the end zone for the second Rebel score. Outstand- ing on defense were Dickie Crutcher, Jim Ray, Arnold Sneed, and Bill Penny. WALKER COUNTRY 28 BUTLER 6 The Rebels, within 15 yards of the goal line three times, failed to cross the double strip but once and were handed a 28 - 6 loss by the Walker County Vikings. The lone Rebel tally came on a two yard plunge by fullback Jerrell Moon. Outstanding on the line were Bob Buchholz, Jim Ray, and David Reeder. SHEFFIELD 7 BUTLER 27 On the opening kickoff of the Sheffield game, Jerrell Moon took the ball 88 yards for a quick Rebel score. Other Rebel touch- downs came on a 20 yard toss from Ronnie Puckett to Moon, a 21 yard run by Kenneth Guthrie, and a 10 yard strike from Puckett to Cal Elliott. Terry Fello’s line play was outstanding along with the play of Tom Lawson, Romeo Caranto, Bob Buchholz, and Marion King. MEMPHIS TECH 0 BUTLER 35 The Rebels, still riding high after their victory over Sheffield the week before, handed the Memphis Tech visitors a 35 - 0 setback. Cal Elliott registered three touchdowns, arid Jerrell Moon and Kenneth Guthrie each scored once for the Rebels. Neil White, Bill Penny, Bob Craddock, and Phil Bell played fine defensive ball. FWBRU HtEHUSm COFFEE OF FLORENCE 20 BUTLER 14 Riding a two game winning streak, the Rebels went to Florence gunning for their third. Playing possibly their best game of the year, Butler grudgingly lost a 20 - 14 game to the Coffee Yellow Jackets. The clock ran out on the Rebel eleven as they had the ball on the third yard line driving for the winning score. Butler touchdowns were turned in by Ronnie Puckett and Jerrell Moon. Defensively Glenn Wallace, Billy Lawrence, Tom Lawson, Marion King, David Reeder, and Arnold Sneed played well for the Rebels. HUNTSVILLE 13 BUTLER 34 Five long touchdowns, the shortest being 49 yards, vaulted the Rebels past its crosstown rivals, the Huntsville Crimson Pan- thers. Rebel Scores came on runs of 65 and 56 yards by Kenneth Guthrie and runs of 49 and 59 yards by Jerrell Moon. The fifth Rebel tally came alter Glenn Wallace intercepted a pass and ran 69 yards for the score. Every Rebel player who entered the game played well. This victory gave Butler a record of 5 wins, 4 losses, and one tie for the season. junior 'Uariitp (Cheerleaderi Linda Lacy, Judy Wilson, Betty Guthrie, Pat Cunningham, Lou Whitworth, Theo Wilson, Laura Sholar. Such a System is the prime ingredient lead- ing to our country’s unexcelled position of world leadership in the production of goods. WHAT IS FREE ENTERPRISE? Too many people are putting too much emphasis on “free” and too little emphasis on “enterprise.” Under the Free Enterprise system, the individual is “free” to make something of himself if he has the enterprise to do it. His future depends upon his ov n ambition. This i sour heritage and under its inspired philosophy we have grown and prospered.
