Parlez-vous francais? Many Butler High students learned French, German, Latin, or Spanish. They studied pronunciation, grammar, and foreign Fliterature, but they also learned to appreciate the world and its people. German and Spanish offered three year programs, and Latin and French provided four year programs. Each lan- guage was the key to many adventures in reading and living, traveling, and studying. Foreign language study helped students to better understand English and to enlarge vocabularies. Tape recorders, displays, flash cards, movies, and songs mingled with textbooks and tests in the language classes. Language students were students of language, history, government, culture, and geography. 3 its as . if A few French Il students demonstrate how planting cabbage is done in France.

Lessons from the past paved the way for the age of decision in the social studies classes at Butler Senior High. These courses drew past events into focus with present happenings and provided an under- standing of the nature of man through examination in the fields of World Cultures, American History, Government, Sociology, Economics, and Geography. World Cultures was a required course for gradua- tion in addition to American History. The other social studies subjects were elective courses. World Cultures offered a chronological order of historical events and a broad opening of many doors of culture. American History noted the people, places, policies, and polls which have contributed to the development of democracy in America. The structure of governments and polit- ical problems facing the nation were examined and explored in Government. Sociology and Economics emphasized the nature of group life and the econ- omic system of America. The three-phase Geog- raphy program included World Geography for sophomores, Regional Geography for juniors, and Strategic Area Geography for seniors. This ex- panded program emphasized the importance of geographic knowledge in understanding the problems of today.
