Francis Bacon, the English essayist and scientist, emphasized the importance of the fundamentals of English literature, discussion, and composition. Sophomores, iuniors, and seniors de- veloped appreciation of literature, enthusiasm for class discussion, and understanding of composition techniques in the organized three year English program offered at Butler High School. Sophomores were introduced to the different literary forms by reading novels, dramas, short stories, and poetry. They learned grammar rules and put them to use in paragraph writing. Juniors continued grammar study and concentrated on American literature from the Colonial period to modern times. In the senior year, students applied previous knowledge to a broad writing program and acquired more skills in grammar, reading comprehension, and creative writing. English liter- ature was studied by all seniors. Advanced English offered a more intensive study of composition and a broader examination of classical and contemporary literature. Each year the students benefitted from the experience of oral reports, class discussions, and research papers. The speech classes trained students in organization, presentation, and interpretation of speeches. ln iournalism students learned to use the concise descriptive language of newspapermen. Dramatic students received theatrical training through play reading, directing, and acting. The debators developed logical thinking and speaking as they debated the issues of Federal medical care for all citizens and ex- tended Social Security benefits to include complete medical care. 18 if I i - st., six:--.qcgzg .MN English students study intently on their assignment as Mrs. Kaiser offers her assistance.
