Albert Miller Librarian Library Club Reading in the school library presented an oppor- tunity for selt-education to Butler High students. Here recreational reading was recognized as a worthwhile leisure. The school library offered a well-balanced collection ot books and materials for browsers and researchers. Advanced English students enioyed the literature in the College English W-X-.Q library. As students sought out needed information for research, they learned the value of the card catalog, periodical guide, and vertical file. This year an addition was built which more than doubled the size of the library. This nucleus of information, the school library, was the center of recreational and academic learning, Interested students, such as Dick, have little trouble locating books. 16 5

Guidance Helps Plan tor Students' Future George Bernlohr Robert Coshdollar Guidance Guidance ci' x. fi N' Mr. Cashdollar helps Bess work out a schedule problem. :ss 'Wi Y Student transcripts serve a useful purpose, but also provide o big iob for guidance teachers. GUIDANCE Five guidance counselors helped chart the future pathways ot Butler High students by advising and guiding them through- out the year. By administering various tests, the counselors discovered the aptitudes ot each student. They encouraged them 'to make the most of individual assets. In guidance classes and in the guidance office, counselors scheduled courses for iuniors and sophomores. Juniors registered for Preliminary Col- lege Boards and the National Merit Scholarship Test. Advising seniors ot required credits, tests, and scholarships were the tasks ot senior counselors. The guidance ottice provided a large assortment ot college catalogs and pamphlets. The counselors helped interested seniors apply to colleges and schools of specialized training. Safety, first, last, and always has been the motto of the Driver Education classes at Butler Senior High. In these classes students learned traffic regulations, safety rules, anal mechanics of the auto- mobile. The students put this classroom knowledge to use when they drove under the supervision of a qualified instructor. The teachers corrected driving mistakes before they became poor habits. Students in Occupation Education were given individual attention during the morning in the sub- jects required for graduation. The second half of the school day was available for elective sub- iects, profitable to a future vocation. John concentrates on his problem as Mrs. Schoerner and math class observe.
