. '.- 1 I THE MAGNET BUTLER AREA JOINT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BUTLER. PENNSYLVANIA VOLUME 57 SENIOR ISSUE JUNE. 1959 IN MEMORIAM James W. McDowell 1898-1958 THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE YOUTH OF BUTLER HE WAS A TEACHER: For 35 years he taught his classes to understand America; held before them the ideals of good citizenship—his greatest desire to help his pupils make the most of themselves. GENERAL JIM: Hundreds learned the lesson of patience and the necessity of studying from being members of his Standing Army. AN ATHLETE: All his life he enjoyed sports, playing on high school and college teams— an example of good sportsmanship and of philosophical acceptance of success or defeat. A COACH: Season after season, he taught boys the fundamentals of football and, most of all, instilled in them principles of clean playing and fair winning. A LOVER OF NATURE: His garden was his hobby; happy hours were spent hunting and fishing; a cabin in the woods was one of his favorite spots. A FRIEND: Administrator, teacher, student, fellow athlete; high or low, rich or poor, to all he was there when needed — staunch, upright, and fair. A MAN: Sincere, honest, forth- right, just in his dealings, standing for what makes a real man—by being one. THE MAGNET 1959 This year, Butler Senior High School went international with an exchange student as a member of the student body. Peter Arvidson, a high school student from Sweden, was selected by the American Field Service to attend Butler High School during 1958-59. In September, we welcomed Peter who entered wholeheartedly into the life of the school. In sharing class-work. and school activities, he has experienced American education at the secondary level. The following pages illustrate the work, activities, and special events which make up a typical high school life in the United States. We sincerely hope that Peter has enjoyed his stay at Butler High and that he may retain pleasant memories of his school life and friends here. Peter has given us a bit of Sweden; we hope he takes a bit of America home with him. And may we, the pupils of Butler High School, feel as we view these pages that here is pictured and recorded the life which we shared with Peter. THINGS PETER LIKES ABOUT BUTLER HIGH: Saturdays off. Most of the teachers and students. The band and the games. The Magnet. Student Council. Most of the plays BHS sets up. The clubs. The choirs. One can choose his own subjects. THINGS WE LIKE ABOUT PETER: His sunny smile. His friendly attitude. H is tuneful trumpet. His helpful spirit. He’s entered school activities. He likes hot dogs and record hops. That he, too, walks the halls. He’s made himself one of us. Peter is now one of us as he does research work in the library. He can read, write, and speak English as well as any of us, and is now excelling in American slang. TABLE OF CONTENTS In Memoriam Introduction Administration Faculty and Classes Student Body...... Page Eighty-four Some of the boys preparing for a hard practice session. The football team finished the year with six wins and two losses. The two losses, which were suffered early in the season, may have been partly due to the lack of experience which handicapped the squad this year. However, the team snapped out of its slump and won the final four games. This driving finish was highlighted by the seven to six win over a very powerful Sharon team, despite the fact that Butler had to come from behind to do it. Bill McConnell was elected the year’s most valuable player by his fellow teammates. However, there were several bright spots that highlighted an otherwise mediocre season. The Tornado squad played in many close games that were decided by three points or less. The ability to win the close games is usually considered to be the mark of a good team. Two wins over Ford City, one of Butler’s biggest basketball rivals, also gave the school something to celebrate. Mike Zaccari was chosen as the team’s most valuable player. Girls’ Athletic Association The Girls’ Athletic Association is organized to promote interest in girls’ sports. Any girl automatically becomes a member of GAA when she takes part in an intramural activity. Among the sports offered are volleyball, basketball, tumbling, trampoline, recreational swimming, badminton, ping-pong, archery, and softball. Points are awarded to each girl for participating in these sports. Two points are awarded to members of a winning team, one to the members of the losing team, and five points to the captain of the team. When a girl has accumulated 150 points, she is awarded a GAA wing; when she has accumulated 350 points, she receives a GAA let- ter. These awards are presented at the annual GAA picnic held in the spring. Election of officers of GAA takes place in the spring. Candidates for office are girls who have shown an interest in sports and ability as a leader. These girls are nominated by the Executive Board and elected by the girls in the physical education classes. Each year managers and assistant managers are selected by the physical education teachers to serve on the Executive Board. These girls are responsible for keeping a record of all points accumulated by members. They also plan the annual GAA dance and the GAA picnic. Page One Hundred One Planning one of the many GAA projects are officers Kay McCandless, vice-president; Eileen Bachman, corresponding secretary; Joyce Bain, president; Mary Jane Archer, recording secretary; and Kay Ellen Bitter, treasurer. The band, led by Drum Major Charles Hanks, marched in the Safety Day Parade, Veterans Day Parade, and Memorial Day Parade. The Parent’s Music Auxiliary sponsored the annual Band Banquet on November 13, where senior band members were presented with their music pins. In preparation for tryouts, the drum major holds a class for any band member who is interested in trying out for the office. After several weeks of classes, the band goes to the athletic field to be put through drills by these boys. They are judged on precision, accuracy, poise, leadership, and ability to handle the baton. After several days of tryouts, the new drum major is chosen. From this group of candidates, squad leaders and band managers are also chosen. On January 8, 9, and 10, District Band was held at Darlington, Pa., with four band members participating. Those members were Steve Shewchuk, Sue Cober, Loretta Kidd, and Delores Shever. Steve Shewchuk had the honor of being chosen to attend State Band, held January 29, 30, and 31, at Blairsville, Pa. Page One Hundred Fifty-one SCHOOL LIFE During the first few days of their new life in Butler High, many sophomores often suffer at the hands of the cunning upper classmen. In fact, Patty Eikas looks rather doubtful as senior Howard Mortimer tries to convince her that the elevator is just down the hall and to the left. For the 35 per cent of the student body who travel to and from school on buses, the problem of the day is usually how to find the best seat. Is this group mapping out their latest strategy for storming the vehicle? '’Take me to your snack bar; your leader can wait!” While we gain knowledge in our classrooms, visitors to the school are often supplied with information by FTA members stationed in the main hall. Page One Hundred Fifty-two The yellow GAA pompons add color and excitement to any football game, but for some reason cheerleader Joyce Bain needs the assistance of Bill McConnell of the varsity squad and vice-president of Student Council Bob Kripowicz in order to coerce trumpeter Peter Arvidson into buying one. Early in the school year, seniors make the acquaintance of William Shakespeare, master of both tragedy and comedy. Although seen in one of his lighter moments, it is doubtful if the bard would have spent an evening at Tabbard Inn, pictured at his side, in such rakish attire. Even before school began in the fall, members of the marching band were going through their paces under the hot summer sun at Pullman Park. While Mr. Gibson surveys the situation, drum major Chuck Hanks barks out orders with the able assistance of announcer Dave Rogosky. Page One Hundred Fifty-three While most students slave away in the heat of the afternoon, DeCo and Co-Op students get on-the-job training in Butler business establishments. Here Tom Barto busily studies the symmetry of a display while trimming the window at Butler Stationery Store. Could these loiterers be the same people who anxiously watched the clock during seventh period, stampeded to homerooms for their wraps, and burst wildly outside to get away from school after a hectic day? Many students will agree that the few minutes after school is the best part of the school day. Page One Hundred Fifty-four Gayle Crawford displays the selection of class rings at Crawford's Jewelry Store to two interested seniors, Carole Rodda and Dianna Alberti. These class rings will serve as lasting reminders of pleasant experiences of years at Butler High. Each Hallowe’en many art students participate in a window painting contest sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the City Recreation Board. Here we see twosenior high students putting finishing touches on their prize-winning entry. Page One Hundred Fifty-five From the depths of the silent building comes a welcome sound, the bell, followed by the patter of little feet as students grab their books (or test tubes) and charge down the hall to the nearest fountain. By the way, Vic, what flavor is it today? Dick and Ed, two of Butler's typical he-men, obviously enjoy overseeing Sonia’s attempts at removing the winter’s first snowfall. A torture chamber? A calesthenics class? No, the cheerleaders are attempting to instill some of their school spirit in the lagging student body at a pep rally. Page One Hundred Fifty-six What’s this, a mid-morning snack? Kay Dutter, winner of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award, looks pleased with her concoction. Ahh, magnifique!” Now, hold that pose and say cheese, Ann, and Mr. Bennett will have another knockout junior picture to his credit. ’’Now, I should wrap the hickey-do around the whatsis and then turn on the thing-a-migig. But where’s the hickey-do? A step toward the future for many seniors was attendance at College Night on the evening of October 8. This representative is intent upon selling his school to the prospective collegians. Page One Hundred Fifty-seven Remember to say it with a British accent and drop the final V,” Mr. Millen warns Bill Elwood and Ed Abes at the Dear Delinquent” tryouts. Don’t spill a drop of that air!” the Liquid Air Expert cautions Dave Parry and Bob Stanley as they carefully pour” air into a beaker, I want to stay to complete the program.” Page One Hundred Fifty-eight Two minutes before the half-time show; the members of the band are not tuning instruments but biting nails, wondering if the team can make that touchdown before half-time. ’’Hurry up! We’ve only got thirty minutes to get our lunch, eat it, go to the snack bar, take a walk through the halls, look in the windows of a couple classes, make a date for tonight, get a drink, and get back to our class on time!” Page One Hundred Fifty-nine Page One Hundred Sixty Poems are made by fools like me, but only our stage crew could make THIS tree. This clever bit of scenery was assembled for Finian’s Rainbow by the capable stage crew. These hard-working boys are under the direction of William Lehnerd. They put in more work hours than any group of this size. These boys may appear to be up a tree at the moment, but we can be sure at any time they can create an interesting and attractive set for a musical or play. Bob Stanley, crew chief, and the members of the crew, Bob Cwik, Ed Kley, Dave Parry, and Bill Smith, all accumulated enough points to earn pins. Caught in the act! It’s a rare sight, indeed, but the photographer just happened by when the industrious custodians were taking their well-deserved coffee break. In this picture we see Bob Miller, Dave Stewart, Guy Wiles, Harry Roudybush, and Roy Yockey. Others who help keep our building in order are Russell Dufford, Emmanual Prorzman, George James, and Ed McKivigan. Behind every dramatic production at Butler High are several industrious committees or crews who work hard to produce a successful presentation, but gain little recognition for their toil. Working on the production, in addition to the stage and scenery crews, are such committees as property, costumes, make-up, ticket, program, and publicity. Tickets must be delivered, posters made, fire-extinguishers found, gray hair for Mr. Risley, blackouts perfectly timed, and miles of wire for Chipper’s remote-control draperies. In this particular picture we see Elaine Andrews and her make-up committee busily preparing the cast of Open House for their premiere performance. O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum, how graceful are thy branches! Thanks to the DeCo Club, each year Butler High has had a beautiful Christmas tree in the front hall, along with other Yuletide decorations. This year the club, sponsored by Mr. Shaul and Mr. Holden, erected and trimmed this lovely tree for all students and teachers to enjoy. Page One Hundred Sixty-one Well, the BHS faculty gets a break after all. While Mr. Rosenzweig pours a cup of coffee for Miss Johnson, Mr. Thompson and Mr. Gibson look on waiting for just one more cup. Let’s hope there’s enough of the black stuff to keep them awake for that sixth period class. They say it can't be done. Nevertheless, it is evident that this ardent Butler High student has rushed off without his head this morning! When the cheerleaders take time for a conference with advisors Mrs. Fudoli and Miss DeAugustino, young fry have a terrific chance to slip under the guard-rope. What ho! I do say this rest (which has lasted long enough) is better than Epsom salts for my poor, tired feet; nice of the committee to provide these seats. The intermission is over, but where is my date? Page One Hundred Sixty-two Arc you a member of this milling mob thronging through the congested passageways at the football field during the intermission provided by halftime? With only twenty-three minutes until the show hits the air-waves, Bob Wishnev insists that Abby Richards and Gerry Wellner, the other members of the Morning-After-Gang, play his favorite tune first. Although Gary Criner and Nancy Brookhart of the Junior Downbeat show arc occupied with their records and commercials, Maxine Schriner has forgotten her place at the mike and is watching the clock again. One, two, three, testing . . . Frank Patten and Wayne Shoemaker are in the midst of checking the public address system prior to assembly. Page One Hundred Sixty-three Isn’t she lovely? Elaine Smith poses prettily as she did when she represented Butler Senior High in the Community Chest Parade. Her red hair and sunny smile also won her the title of Miss Flame. At the Third Annual Leadership Workshop sponsored by the Student Council, Mr. Graham is leading a class for presidents and vice-presidents. Butler Senior High School was host to area schools in this workshop for class and club officers. Page One Hundred Sixty-four No, these aren’t the streamers of a maypole.
