' ooc Student Life m Brickley Named Jan Brickley, El Dorado sophomore, was elected Homecoming Queen by the student body for the 1976 football season. She was crowned at half time of the Hutchinson game on November 6. Ms. Brickley was attended by Beverly Bickham and Cindy Johnson. The Queen was escorted by Dave Gentzler (upper right). Ms. Bickham was escorted by Riley Hughs (lower left). Ms. Johnson was escorted by Mike West (lower right). A Homecoming dance was held Saturday evening after the game. Your interest, enthusiasm and cooperation make our college really live. It has also been successful in terms of our board of trustees, and our faculty and staff, all working together to offer the best education and training available anywhere. It has also been successful in terms of our community, the support and personal involvement they are providing to make our programs and services meaningful to all. — CARL HEINRICH K ' 1 ■m. T 10 — r President Serves First Full Term President Carl Heinrich completed his first full academic year as the top administrator of BCCC this spring. Under his administration the college enjoyed a slight increase in enrollment while many colleges throughout the state suffered decreases in enrollment. Dr. Heinrich has encouraged an open policy with students and joins them in many of their activities. He encouraged the reactivation of the Student Council and homecoming activities. The president also made himself available at open forums where he listened to the concerns of the students. Dr. Heinrich hopes to go on record as having a totally open administration. n Administrators change Administrators duties vary with their departments. William Cummins as Dean of Students is in charge of all student activities. Ev. Kohls took over for the retiring Leonard McKinney as Registrar at the end of first semester. The Registrar oversees admissions and transcripts of all students. David R. (Nubs) Nelson is Superintendent of Grounds a Buildings. Jim Chamberlain is Director of Financial Affairs. He oversees all monies coming in and going out. Ron Wilson Dean of Instruction, is in charge of all curriculum offered at BCCC. He is also director of all faculty personnel. KASSEBAUM Chairman Trustees make big decisions Ail major decisions concerning BCCC must be made by the Board of Trustees. The Board discussess such things as new programs, hiring of new faculty members, major purchases, and any physical changes or additions to the campus. One of the major policies put into effect this year by the Trustees is the addition of a new carpentry program. The Board of Trustees is elected by the voters of this county. NIXON LIBRARY holds a wealth of information in its collection of books, magazines, and audio-visual aids such as films, film-strips, slides and records. Hugh Richardson, librarian, directs the operation which is unique in that it is the busiest operation on the campus with the least professional help. Richardson (2) is assisted by (1) Marie Waltman; (3) student help; (4) Rosemary Kelly. Some students visit the office many times. The staff includes: (1) Judy Strain, counselor; (2) Bill Trent, guidance director; (3) Laurina Hofen, work-study student, and Glenda Harmon, secretary to counseling; (4) Vic Bland, counseling and place- ment. 15 Coaches change Coaches were in a new lineup this year with Curt Shipley taking over as Athletic Director. Dale Remsberg became head football coach. Jim Hooten and Paul Hoffman were added as assistant football coaches. It is made up of five sections: business administration, data processing, accounting, office education, and marketing. M 21 Math-Science ranges THE MATHEMATICS-SCIENCE division offers courses ranging from the metric system to calculus, from general science to human anatomy. Most students at BCCC find themselves enrolled in this division whether seeking graduation requirements or working on pre-professional courses. In addition to the training the nursing candidates rceived at BCCC, the students also took clinic in area hospitals. Vo-tech offered THE INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION division at Butler County gives students both classroom and practical experience. In addition to the regularly enrolled college students, other students are enrolled in federally funded vocational programs also offered in the division. Industrial education has faculty members teaching courses in auto mechanics, auto body, welding and electronics. The average secretary on campus is neat, trim, pleasant, knowledgeable, and female. The women ' s volleyball team finished the season with 14 wins and 15 losses. The team went into regionals at Pratt with a 14-14 record. Tournaments in which the team participated included Hutchinson, Pratt, and St. John ' s at Winfield. The female Grizzlies tied for second place at the Hutchinson tournament. Squad members included four sophomores and nine freshmen. Jeanette Malone was coach for the team. Butler hosted a quadrangular meet and one match on the home court. Early in the season the women had a record of six wins and no losses but they went into a slump at mid-season. 35 S gH .■■' , -i- ■' ' ' - ' wm mm ' ' %- ' _■■■■? ' ■■HI (PUS Coach Ollie Isom ' s cross country team, although plagued by injuries, sickness and bad luck, had a respectable season with first place finishes at the Allen County and Haskell Invitationals and a second place at Region VI. Fred Torneden and John Lara led the squad with either one or the other running first man throughout the season. Torneden, while competing against 250 runners at the W.S.U. Gold Classic, placed eleventh overall while winning the juco division. Lara ran 25:13 for five miles when he took second at the Butler County Invitational. Torneden and Tom Vernon competed at the NJCAA meet in Farmindale, N.Y. placing 44th and 65th respectively in a field of 270 runners. : CROSS COUNTRY team members include (FRONT ROW, L. TO R.) The Grizzlies, who finished 3-5 in League play, won some big games over Ft. Scott and Independence but bowed to some lesser teams. The Coffeyville Red Ravens took the League for the second straight year. Butler County did some damage to some teams who had the Jayhawk League title in sight since the League was undecided until the final game between Independence and Coffeyville. The Grizzlies had three men named to the All- League team: Hiram Wright, offensive back; Reggie Pope, offensive guard; Robbie Butler, defensive back. The female cagers finished first in the Allen Coun- ty Tournament with a third place finish in the Cloud County Tournament. Two-thirds of the way through the season (book press time) the women ' s team stood with a 6-7 record. Although the team was hurt by injuries, Coach Ev Kohls said that the women played extremely well. Two of the most decisive wins included a 69-46 victory over Southeast Nebraska and a 59 to 49 win over Allen County. Six members of the team were sophomores. i 1 The Grizzly basketball team lost a lot of close ones this season but stili showed some bright spots with team power by defeating Garden City 84-55, Cloud County 98- 85, and Seward County 74-72. BCCC also took second in its own invitational tournament. The Bears who had a hard time holding a lead all sea- son played in quite a few overtime and double overtime games, often losing by a small point margin. The Grizzlies were paced this season by All Conference sophomore Robert Cox from Camden, N.J. Cox lead the league in scoring and was sixth in rebounding. Cox was nominated for Ail-American, the first player Coach Curt Shipley has nominated since taking over the head coach- ing job. The cheerleaders generated enthusiasm for all athletic competitive events these past seasons both at home and on the road. A pep band was backing up the group. The Honeybears drill team provided entertainment by performing precise drill routines at the home football and basketball games. The drill team also participated in parades at El Dorado, Augusta and Arkansas City. Anderson. They have presented concerts both locally and on-the-road. (UPPER PHOTO L. TO R.) THE BAND (both jazz and pep) is small in number but belies the fact with the music it puts forth. Robert Anderson is director. Instrumentalists pictured on the opposite page include Bruce Dunfee on the trombone; Charlotte Often, trombone; Barry Phillips, guitar; Roger Sooby, saxophone; Joann Blecha, piano. 4Q DECA gives service Members of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) at BCCC began a marketing improvement research project this year in Augusta for the Chamber of Commerce there with great success. Dr. Herman Ogg is the director of the marketing technology program and DECA sponsor. DECA sponsored the Muscular Dystrophy marathon dance on the campus which resulted in raising $500 in pledges for the fund. DECA was host also to the annual Career development Conference and Contest in the spring for post secondary schools in Kansas. CRAIG HAMILTON and Charles Melsoni display the trophies they won tor receiving the most pledges for the Muscular Dystrophy Dance-A-Thon sponsored by the DECA group on campus . Shane Krause, the star pitcher, not pictured. Student council reorganizes After a one-year absence, Student Council was brought back to life by a nucleus of students who elected themselves officers. Three sophomores were elected; Jan Brickley, president; Rex Roney, vice- president; and Cindy Johnson, secretary-treasurer. Everett Kohls and Sue Beattie are sponsors. Stuco sponsored dances, pep rallies, bonfires, Friday night flicks, spirit weeks, and the homecoming ceremonies. The stuco stars defeated the faculty 16-12 in a benefit softball game for the United Way. The stars raised $75 in donations. 54 NURSING CLUB officers are (FRONT ROW FROM L.) Nurse ' s club raises money Students enrolled in the nursing program at Butler took time out of their busy schedules this year to prepare goodies several times for bake sales held by the Nursing Club as fund raising projects. The Club was working toward accummulating enough funds to send all the student nurses to a convention in Florida. The Nursing Club promotes interest and professionalism in that chosen health field among the students. r s : - ;.. ' ♦ ! i Parties liven dorm There ' s no place like home, and to one- hundred and twelve men and women attending BCCC, home is the dorm. There are ten students from out-of state and two foreign students living in the dorm. Under the guidance of housemother Nita Moriarty, students enjoy parties, fiestas, and dances. She also provides counseling and assistance to dorm residents. The student union provides dorm residents and all other students with activities such as pool, ping pong, and television. The cafeteria located in the student union supplies the students with three meals a day. Bookstore facilities are also housed in the student union Jmitun The Lantern ' leads way THE LANTERN, the weekly newspaper published by BCCC students, has won high honors in both state and national contests. Each week its appearance on the campus is awaited with pleasure by most, and with trepidation by some since The Lantern ' tells it Like it is. Bill Bidwell is the adviser. Scapino is the story of how two wayward Italian youths employ a suave, handsome smooth-talker to help them excape their father ' s wrath for marrying without parental consent. The story typifies the well-to-do American middle class family in today ' s age of automation and mechanized men and women. Many freshmen made Butler their choice to begin their college careers, and enrollment was up about three per cent over last year. BCCCC ' s four mile relay team made an excellent show- ing at the WSU Relays by smashing the old record by 27 seconds in Cessna Stadium. Grant Overstake made his mark in the decathlon by winning ninth in the National Junior College Athletic Asso- ciation contest. The team members took first place in their home meet, lost second by the toss of a coin at the Haskell Invitational, and never placed lower than third throughout the season as a team. Rose Robidou placed fourth in the shot put at the regionals in Hutchinson which made her eligible for the nationals. The 440 relay team also qualified for the nationals. The women elected not to attend the nationals. Mrs. Lou Clennan was the women ' s acting coach and she summarized the season: We had a tremer dous season. The women gave 100 per cent. Outreach serves wide community The Adult Reading Academy and the Adult Resource Center, sponsored by BCCC and under the direction of Joy Choens and Mary Lou Stebbins have ex- panded their areas to eight counties this past year. The center part of the college ' s program for reaching out to the commu- nity offers day and night classes to all adults in the community interested in ex- panding their education. BCCC also added a new program to its community services division. Co-spon- sored by Midkap organization, a life-en- richment class, for people 60 and over, offers three presentations every Thurs- day. At the end of the semester thirty-six members were registered in the program. BCCC ' s continuing education program at McConnell AFB offers night school to ser- vicemen, for which they receive college credits. (5) Students work on reading at the Adult Reading Academy. h v s 121 Journalists win highest honors The Lantern newspaper and The Grizzly yearbook swept the top awards in the fifth annual Kansas Community College Journalism Contest this year. The Lantern won eight first place awards and The Grizzly won first place overall in the yearbook divi- sion. Students receiving first place awards included Bryan Clark, newswriting; Jeanette Carter, column writing; Mike Ketteman, sports writing; Grant Over- stake, feature writing; Dave Gentzler, sports column writing; Bryan Clark, drawing. Overstake also won first in double truck layout and sports feature writ- ing. Second place in the state was won in several cate- gories including Gentzler in sports writing; Ketteman in editorial writing; Fred Tornedan, sports writing; (Tornedan was also the staff artist for the first place Grizzly); Ketteman, poetry and critical review writ- ing; The Lantern for page layout and makeup. Her fellow instructors on the campus nomi- nated her to compete in the contest sponsored by Emporia State University. Mrs. Longfellow demonstrated commitments to the students, to the public, to the profession, and to professional employment practices. Jim Erickson, rt student, was named out- standing art student of the year and received a $100 scholarship for achieving the honor. His fel- low students and his instructors selected Erick- son.
