F. Adams Richard Chase G. W. Hammel James D. Hittle Board of Trustees The board of trustees opened its activities of the school year with a reception in the cafeteria for the school staff. At the recommendation of William C. Cummins, newly appointed dean of student services, the board approved and financed the lecture series initiated for the benefit of the campus and county community. Bill Russell, former player-coach for the Boston Celtics, rapped ' on October 19. John Glenn, pioneer astronaut, spoke on January 25, and Tom Noel, known for his dramatic protrayal of Mark Twain, closed the series on April 13. Later in the year the board invited and received acceptances of Butler County resi- dents to serve on a committee of approxi- mately 20 persons for long range planning. Primary emphases were to study the present offerings with special attention to the tech- nical area; to suggest offerings which reflect the needs of the students and of the citizens in a two-year college setting; and to arrange in order of priority these needs to be met as the committee sees fit. Mr. Hittle, newly elected member of the board this year, was made president of the State Board of Trustees Association. G. E. Kassebaum Lewis Simmons 72 Personalities lit I Edwin J. Walbourn Mr. Edwin J. Walbourn, president of Butler Coun- ty Community Junior College, has traveled to many parts of the North Central area this past year. Serving as a consultant on evaluation teams, he has visited many junior colleges. Part oi his advantage is discov- ering new practices and techniques that may apply to his own campus. He also has represented the college in numerous conferences and other official tasks as well as welcoming organizations that hold their meet- ings on the local campus. 73 Dean of Students Services Dean of Instructional Services ' Administrative Staff A change in the administrative structure at the college resulted in new assignments for some members of the staff. Dean Cummins, who had been academic dean, became Dean of Student Services. Under his supervision are included the registrar, counseling, admissions, athletics, financial aids, student activities, student housing, the student union, and public relations. Dean Wilson became Dean of Instruc- tional Services with supervision of the li- brary and of all instructional areas in both day and night programs. Mr. McKinney was named Director of Research and retained the responsibilities of registrar. He, Mr. Harris, Business Manager, Mr. Roberts, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, and Mrs. Mettler, director of nursing, remain directly re- sponsible to President Walbourn. Librari- ans and their assistants are most helpful for all per- sons browsing for library information. Students seek- ing employment, vocational guidance, or suitable in- formation for their selection of a four-year college or university find answers to their questions in the coun- seling center. Mrs. Rich was employed to supervise all copy work on the Zerox machine. Mrs. Shaw replaced Mrs. Schowalter after the Schowalters adopted a son. Mrs. Lynch replaced Mrs. Parsons in the admissions office, and Mrs. Holladay filled a vacancy in that office. Personalities 79 Maintenance Staff Keeping all areas of the campus at- tractive in appearance, functional in operation, and comfortable for efficient activity demands a maintenance staff, each of whom is proud of his particular responsibility and performs it with skill and personal pleasantries that endear him to the people with whom he asso- ciates. The rapport that the various members of the college maintenance staff have with the students and with other campus personnel is much appre- ciated. And the attention that they, as- sisted by a number o student employ- ees, give in providing a campus that is worthy of praise calls for grateful recognition. ■' — . OX : fi ' John Cleveland. Many of these stu- dents are called high school specials, who are per- mitted to supplement their high school study sched- ules with any college course of their choice — whether a general education course, a vocational course, or a community interest course — without payment of the full campus privilege fees. Although these students are not included in the yearbook, recognition of their ac- celerated educational achievements is certainly due them. Other students - some who already have college degrees, and some who are employed full time but choose to enroll in certain courses either for personal enrichment or for a long range goal ■- mingle with the day students and are included with them in all campus privileges. Among those on campus this year are the students featured below. No doubt others should be included in this group. All of them rightfully deserve consideration of their academic interest. Esther Cummins Martha Dambach David Foreman Paul Haines Peggy Lackey Zeila Roberts Charles Romero Roberta Ruegnitz A rainy day doesn ' t dampen the beauty of the campus. Personalities 121 Acknowledgements As the final layouts are being prepared and final copy is being written, I look back to the time when this book was just an idea on paper. Since then it has progressed to become a book of memories and good times for each student, faculty member, and staff member here at Butler County Community Junior College. My year as editor has been a series of memorable frustrations and accomplishments. Publications such as yearbooks are a battle against time with strict schedules to meet. It is a challenge that keeps one driving because he has everything to gain. Although it is impossible to mention all who have contributed to the production o this yearbook, I would like to express my sincere thanks and apprecia- tion to the following: The Coca-Cola Bottling Com- pany for its permission to use its song title for our theme; Mr. Frank Wright, yearbook representative for getting us started; Miss Blenda Kuhlmann, our adviser, for her time and patience; the 1972 GRIZZ- LY PRODUCTION STAFF: Cliff Harder, who doubled as page editor and photographer, Rita Feh- renbach, and Michelle Hepler. Special staff members were Marge LaForest, our typist, and David Voth who volunteered his help. No yearbook would be complete without pictures, and our thanks go to Mr. Bill Bidwell and his photographers: Tony Harris, Buford Pringle, Nolan Faidley, and Mike Scully, to mention a few, who have kept us supplied with pictures. Co- operation from clubs and sponsors here on campus has also helped us. But my most sincere thanks go to all o{ ' YOU the individuals here at BCCJC who had to endure having your pictures taken, even retaken, so that we could give you something to cherish.
