The plays given were To Burn a Witch, directed by Maurita Deines; The Informer, directed by Richard Martindale; and Sweet Betsy from Pike, directed by Jan Mountz. Each student had to select his own script, cast his own show, anc work out all the technical problems, such as cos- tuming, set arrangement, and make-up. 18 Campus Life The Informer To Burn a Witch ' Amahl Wk ' I Amahl greets night vistors. Campus Life 19 Orientation Orientation was an innovative program for the junior college freshmen this year. Students participated in a two-day series of events that acquainted them with college life, introduced them to members of the faculty, helped them to located campus areas, and enabled them to make new friends more readily. At right freshmen take an English aptitude test in the cafeteria; below left, students experience mock class schedules; below right, students keep time to rock music; bottom, students reassemble for closing session. As a result of their efforts each freshman received an hour of credit and completed their final enrollment. Approxi- mately 422 students qualified for the credit hour. Next year ' s ori- entation will be greatly improved because of the opinions voiced by this year ' s freshmen. % « Mr l ' %rJttw ' k As soon as the last session was over in the gym, the fresh- men began enjoying campus activities (above). Free food and drinks were furnished by the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce to the students and faculty (below left); two stu- dents peel the paper off their ice cream bars (below right) . Campus Life 21 Marketing Technology Last fall an experimental program in Marketing Technology was started. The Butler County Communi- ty Junior College program closely resembles the stand- ard Distributive Education program; yet there is a pur- pose in mind: to provide not only a comprehensive training but also to offer a specialized, on-the-job train- ing experience. Each student has a structured program designed for him as a individual developed in his own interests. The curriculum consists of approximately 19 hours of busi- ness education, 12 hours in marketing and distributing and 14 hours in a technical and special field area. In addition to his regular college curriculum, the student must maintain an actual job in his area of study, for actual work experience of 1 5 hours . The new program this year is truly an advancement for the individual student. Marketing Technology helps the individual to develop maturity and become part of the community and an active participant in the partner- ship of education and industry. Harold Harmon and Jim Edwards attempt to find answers in relationships of people for their consuming projects. 22 Campus Life Shana Lewis and Margaret Chapman refer to salemanship material to prove that women are capable in the business world, too. Pat Fanello demonstrates how easily the portable-tape-television unit operates for individual attention. The Bears, behind the dominating duo of Fred and Ray Johnson, posted a 14-11 season record. Going into the Region Six playoff, the Bears were considered dark horses for the tournament crown. Eventual tournament runnerup Independence ruined the Butler County chances, however, in the first round with a resounding 102-89 victory ending the Butler County basketball season . All-conference selections, Fred and Ray John- son, led the team in both scoring and rebounding. Both finished in the top ten in the conference statistics. Besides the Johnsons, Butler County got steady performances from Mike Pontious, Paul Graham, Larry Ewart, Rixey Wertenberger, Joe Konrade and Steve Laughlin, all sophomores. Freshmen who saw action during the season in- cluded Tom Byler, who saw limited starting duty near the end of the season, Roger Pock, Rocky McWilliams, Tom Bechtold, and Ken Kneiling. It was a mid-season slump that spelled disaster so far as the Bear ' s conference hopes were con- cerned. Consecutive losses to Pratt and Seward County primed the Bears for key league wins over Cowley and Dodge City. The Bears then lost a heart breaker to eventual league champion Hutchinson. Butler County led by as many as 19 points before falling by a single point in the last seconds. Rallying in the second half, the Bears clinched second place in the western division of the confer- ence with a last second win over Dodge City. It was a last second shot from Fred Johnson that provided the winning margin and propelled the Bears into the Hutchinson Region Six playoffs. Spring Activities 123 Golfers Finish Outstanding Season The golf squad completed the league season by capturing first place in the Kan- sas Jayhawk Junior College Conference. The squad competed against tough teams in the league. Four firsts, two seconds, and one third place plus an overwhelming vic- tory in the regionals completed the 1971 season. This is the first season that the golf squad, under Coach Nay, has had a win- ning season. Terry Sevart received first medalist and Eric Forsee received second medalist. The four-member team entered the na- tional junior college meet at Flint, Michi- gan, on June 8, 9, 10, 11, competing against five-member teams from 22 other junior colleges. Playing 36 holes on alter- nate days at the Flint Country Club and the Warrick Hills Country Club courses, the team placed eleventh, qualifying to return next year. Terry Severt placed fif- teenth, missing an All-American rating by two strokes. The experience climaxed the first successful year of golfing for the Grizzly golfers. Theatre The theatre department of Butler County Community Junior College presented two major productions during the spring semester. The Sorcerer ' s Apprentice, a children ' s play, di- rected by Darryl F. Patten, launched a busy schedule that was to take them to Abilene, Tex- as, for their last performance. Following this production was the one-man show starring Richard Martindale in Krapp ' s Last Tape, a one-act play directed by Carl Marsh. Martin- dale received the Mastercraftsman Award for his work in all aspects of play production. The community production, Our Town, concluded the year ' s performances. Novice Debate Squad Ends Season Well The Butler County Community Junior College forensics squad had a very active season during 1970-1971 school year. They traveled to fifteen tournaments, where they were finalists in twenty- eight forensic events. They won several individual and team trophies from the various tournaments, including a finalist plaque from the regional tour- nament and a semi-final award for Persuasive Speaking at the National Phi Rho Pi convention held in St. Louis. The debate squad, besides competing in forensics tournaments, was active in several other activities. Under the direction of Michael E. Hadley, Direc- tor of Forensics, the squad hosted two intercolle- giate debate tournaments. Members also published two books, the first of which was a history of the Phi Rho Pi program here at BCCJC for the past forty-two years. The second book published was a handbook for high school debaters which was dis- tributed throughout Kansas. Most of this year ' s squad will be returning next year to continue the winning tradition of the Junior College forensics program. 128 Spring Activities The art sale held on the courthouse lawn featured ceramics (ABOVE) and paintings (BELOW). A wide variety of art was displayed at the student art show. Eldon Solt, chosen the outstanding art student of 1970-1971, displays a piece of pottery. Art Activities The Art department had a wide variety of events scheduled this school year of 1970-1971. It held a total of six art exhibits including a two-man art show by Craig Calnan and Micky Jilg. During February, Marilyn Grisham dis- played her work in macromae, rug weaving and hookings. In March, a ceramics exhibit with work by Dar- ryl McQuinnis was displayed. For two weeks in April the students en- rolled in Fundamentals of Art exhib- ited their work in rug hooking. The final art exhibit was the an- nual showing of the day and night students of BCCJC. The show ran from April 25 to May 14. Eldon Solt was named outstanding art student by Mrs. Joann Foth, an artist in resi- dence in El Dorado.
