THE FAVORITES ' DANCE 63 FROM THIS in 1926-1927 TO THIS in 1966-1967 Mr. Nixon has been an influential force in both the school and the community throughout these years. As a speech teacher he directed over fifty major plays as well as many one -act plays. His debate team in 1938, 1951, and 1955 1955 placed first in the National Junior College Debate Tournament; and in other speech con- tests, one student won national first place in Women ' s Extempore Speaking, and another in interpretive Reading. In the community Mr. Nixon served for eight years as president of the El Dorado Con- cert Association and later was a member of its board of directors. He also helped found the El Dorado Little Theatre and was an offi- cer in the local UNESCO chapter. His leader- ship in the community has given him added opportunities to involve his students and fellow -teachers in community programs; for his philosophy of education has included the involvement of students and faculty in the academic and cultural climate of school and community. To see him set out from the campus for town at a brisk pace that most students would not want to match is to realize that his many years of association with the young people of the community have kept him youthful in body as well as in spirit. As he has served faithful- ly the school in the past, we trust the school will continue to serve the youth of the future in bringing educational opportunities and scholar- ly vision to all who pass through its doorways. An Anniversary and A Retirement Forty years ago last September 5, 115 students enrolled in the newly opened El Dorado Junior College and attended classes in the third floor area and two classrooms of the sec- ond floor of the present El Dorado Junior High School building. Two years later Mr. Lester W. Nixon, a young teacher with seven years of experience and a newly earned Master ' s Degree from Colum- bia University, came to El Dorado to become an instructor in the junior college. Here he has remained for a total of thirty-eight years and has seen that young, small school strug- gle for existence, develop an aca- demic stature in the community, and finally demand a program of revision and expansion that resulted in the creation of the Butler County Community Junior College and the construction of twelve buildings on an eighty-acre campus. MR. NIXON in his private office in the library. LESTER W. NIXON, THE GRIZZLY GROWL, 1930. Lester W- Nixon Junior College Instructor 1929-1967 WHEN MR. NIXON grades his last paper at the end of the semester, di- rects graduating sophomores to place their mortar board tassels properly, and hands out his last grade card on June 2, he will close the door on forty - five years of devoted service to the teaching profession, thrity -eight years of which have been spent in El Dorado. Except for a short time early in his El Dorado career when he taught some high school classes, he has been asso- ciated specifically with the junior col- lege. Students who have sat under his instruction, whether the course was composition, literature, English his- tory, psychology, children ' s literature New Testament, speech, or debate, have found his intellectual stature stim ulating and inspiring. LESTER W. NIXON, 1967 Elected to Pi Delta Kappa, national honor education fraternity, while he was a student at Columbia University, he has encouraged and guided many stu- dents to pursue academic excellence for themselves, and he has introduced countless others to literature, art, mu- sic, and other interests through the interrelatedness of his subject matter. As the result of his classroom accom- plishments his influence will continue to reach into the lives of untold numbers of persons who will become recipients of ideas and principles passed on to them by those who have studied under Mr. Nixon, our honored instructor. 65 LINDA PHARES in SAINT JOAN BEV and LIZ CONNER RAY CyTano ORR STEVE Mephistopholes MOORE 66 Actors ' Workshop ' 66 ACTORS ' WORKSHOP ' 66 initiated the stage and lighting equipment of the theater in December.
