Board of Trustees New policies and Construction details Keep board busy AT THE TIME that Butler County Junior College changed its name to Butler County Community Junior College, another change was initiated. The Board of Regents is now called the Board of Trustees. This board is responsible for the important policy making decisions for the junior college. The mem- bers have been kept busy with con- struction details at the new campus, which is scheduled to be completed by September, 1966. Mr. Reed is the successor of Mr. Richard Maddox, a former member of the board. Staff Enlarged Campus Demands More Personnel A GREATLY EXPANDED STAFF this year has been necessary because of the growth of our school and the in- creased responsibilities of managing the physical plant and the official business. Science and Math Expanded facilities Increase science offering STRONG SCIENCE and mathema- tics departments are essential in any- liberal arts institution. These depart- ments at Butler County Community Junior College meet the needs not only of students who major in these fields, but also of those who are majoring in other areas. The science department offers both physical and biological science and sponsors a science club. Courses in mathematics vary from modern math to calculus. The science department is housed in the science wing of the sci- ence-academic complex and includes a lecture hall which seats ninety. The mathematics classes are held in the ac- ademic wing of the building. One additional instructor and five new courses increased the offerings this year and resulted in a greatly enlarged enrollment in the business department under the direction of Mr. McKinney. BOATRIGHT approves drafting plans Vocational Technical New Department Meets County Demands THE VOCATIONAL AND TECH- NICAL area is a new field added to our curriculum this year and will be greatly increased with a third build- ing on the campus next year. Oppor- tunities for training leading to em- ployment are available to persons with or without a high school di- ploma, and those with high school training may secure an Associative of Arts diploma in technical educa- tion in their chosen area. Mr. Wilson is director of the vocational and technical department which in- cludes air conditioning, automo- bile courses, drafting, electricity, and welding. Under the direction of Mrs. Marilynn Mettler, who was assisted by Mr. Samuel Hughes, the curriculum and course of study were painstak- ingly prepared. Students who are accepted into the program and complete the course of study will receive their Asso- ciate of Arts Degree and then will be eligible to write the State Board examinations, the completion of which in neces- sary to become registered nurses. STUDENT NURSES gather in college classroom for a study in Principles of Nursing. Regular hospital beds for practice in bed- side care have become part of the room equipment. 20 Social Science Classroom Routine For All THROUGH LECTURES and discussions students in the social science depart- ment seek to develop a better understanding of their society and its past. The Collegiate Singers, a popular group of singers who are chosen by try-outs, appeared this year for the first time in new black and wine attire . The band, small ensembles, and the regular chorus also participate in special pro- grams. The Christmas program, based on the Christmas Card motif, was well received by an ap- preciative audience. The annual spring tour to high schools in the area and the Palm Sunday cantata were the major spring activities. When the campus is com- plete, the art department will be housed in the fine arts building consisting of three separate parts: ceramics and sculpture, lecture area, and painting. In addition to the courses repre- sented on this page, students studied mathematics, art, psychology, automotive tech- nology, accounting, typing, shorthand, data processing, and computer programming. The council also assumes responsibility for the promotion of good conduct among the stu- dents it represents. Newman Club The Newman Club is an organization of Catholic culture and fellowship that fosters the spiritual, intellectual, and social interests of the Catholic students at the junior college. In addition to the club ' s monthly meetings, the club held a get -acquainted dance, a Halloween dance, and a Christmas dinner, and co operated with the JCY in a Christmas caroling and campus decorating party. Top honors were designated as Peppermint Prince and Princess. FOR TEN YEARS the building loca- ted at 1000 West First has served as the central campus of the junior college. When the current semester ends and the college equipment is subsequently moved to the new campus, the college use of this old familiar friend will be terminated. We bid farewell to the past and open the door to the future of our school. RICH STEPHENS competes in javelin throw. 72 i- BOB LONG, pass receiver of the Green Bay Packers of the NFL, was guest speaker at the sports banquet sponsored by the members of the pep club on May 9. BRUCE GRABER placed fifth at Butler County relays. In Memoriam Bill Flores, a freshman from Kansas City, Missouri, majoring in secondary education, died May 20, 1966, near Topeka on the Kansas Turnpike, as a result of a one-car acci- dent, while he was on his way to Kansas City. He was born March 16, 1946, and was a graduate of Lillis High School in Kansas City. A letterman of the 1965 foot- ball team, he played quarterback on offense and halfback on defense . Theater and Debate THE SPRING PRODUCTION of Pi Delta Theta, the junior college dramatic group, was Tennessee William ' s The Glass Menagerie, directed by Mr. Patten. The actors played four nights to apprec- iative audiences. This, the last production of the Circle Theater at the old campus, was heightened by the sim- plicity and symbolism of its scenic design. Students in debate, for the first time in a number of years, were presented gold and purple letters in April by Mr. McAdoo as an award of their achievement. Originally chartered in 1934, the chap- ter had not been active for several years. Eleven students in debate, foren- sics, and oral interpretation were initi- ated into the organization in May. Steve Moore received a I rating in men ' s orig- inal oration in the state junior college meet, and later placed third in the state college meet. Cindy Johnson placed fifth in women ' s original oration in the col- lege meet. Delta Psi Omega EIGHT STUDENTS were initiated in- to the national honoray dramatic frater- nity for junior colleges early in May. Mr. McAdoo, co-sponsor, was granted an honorary membership.
