Growl staff members prepare to remember the past. The academic work at EJC has, from the opening of the school, been supplemented with an active program of extra- curricular interests . These have given students many oppor tunities for social and business- like contacts that have aided in developing traits and abilities needed in the workaday world. Some of the clubs of the past include the Purple Pansies (a men ' s pep club), the YMCA, the YWCA, and an international relations club. The Pi Delta Theta was organized in 1927 for students who were interested in dra- matics, and numerous theatrical productions were staged as a part of the cultural fare The Delta Psi Omega, a national honor dramatics fraternity, was chartered in 1934, just one year after the Phi Rho Pi, a national forensic fraternity. It is hoped that the Phi Rho Pi may be reactivated this year with renewed interest in debate and forensics. Significant awards were won in 1951 when the men ' s forensic team took national honors in the Junior College forensic festival by winning first and second places in de- bate, first place each in impromptu speaking, after-dinner speaking, and in declama- tion, and second place in extemporaneous speaking. In 1955, the girls ' forensic team won national honors in the national Junior College speech festival by taking first in debate and first in interpretive reading, and again in 1958 a member of the girls ' team placed first in interpretive reading.
