T OgH W r AJfe -v f Our Buildings In September of 1927 El Dorado Junior College opened its doors to higher education in classrooms on the third floor and part of the sec- ond floor of the present Junior High Building. 1927 to 1946 Science and library facilities were provided in the old Senior High building, the basement of which is the north end of the present gym. This building was razed in 1936 to make way for the present Senior High building. The EJC classes moved into the McKinley Building, a grade school building converted for college use, in 1933. This building stood about where the present auditorium now stands. Classes returned to the Junior High building when the Old Senior High and the McKin- ley buildings were being re- placed by the new Senior High building. The new Senior High building was completed in the spring of 1937, and EJC classes moved into the first floor in March. The library and the science classes were located on the upper floors. EARL WALKER Dean, 1927-1946 H. A. SHUMWAY Dean, 1946-1947 EJC salutes the deans who have guided the school through thirty-five years of successful educational leadership. MAX BICKFORD Dean, 1947-1955 TILGHMAN ALEY Dean, 1955-1960 KM l The EJC administrative offices and most classes, except the science department, were moved into the formei; Jefferson Grade School building in the fall of 1946. EDWIN J. WALBOURN Dean, 1960 Remembering significant events of the first thirty-five years at El Dorado Junior College has been made possible largely through the able assistance of Lester W. Nixon retiring speech and English instructor, who has been a member of the college faculty since September of 1929 . His devotion to the school, his personal recollections, and his continued interest in those students who have attended EJC have greatly helped this year ' s Grizzly Growl staff to record the activities and achieve- ments of our school ' s - history. As Mr. Nixon has re- called for us many of the events of the past, stu- dents also have done some remembering. Some in re- ferring to an appreciation of literature that began in his American literature classes, have frequently expressed the desire to listen once again to his reading of some particularly favorite selection. Others have mentioned the many artistic displays of his excellent collection of art prints . Still others have remembered his skillful arrangements of flowers, bottles, candles, and other items which have added color and variety to the sometimes monotonous task of securing an education. Perhaps the best remembered feature of Mr. Nixon ' s classroom has been his numerous books and magazines which have aroused the intellectual curiosity of his students and have challenged them to find a scholarly satisfaction in pursuing an education through the printed word . We remember our friend and instructor with sincere appreciation. The heritage that he leaves us will continue to enrich our lives, for Gladly did he learn and gladly teach. LESTER W. NIXON, 1962 8 First semester classes convene . When school convened in September, 1961, a total of 405 students reported to classes. This is the largest number that EJC has had since 1940, when the en- rollment reached the peak of 443. Of the 405 enrollees this year, 318 were fresh- men, 80 were sophomores, and seven were high school specials. The academic work at EJC has, from the opening of the school, been supplemented with an active program of extra- curricular interests . These have given students many oppor tunities for social and business- like contacts that have aided in developing traits and abilities needed in the workaday world. Some of the clubs of the past include the Purple Pansies (a men ' s pep club), the YMCA, the YWCA, and an international relations club. The Pi Delta Theta was organized in 1927 for students who were interested in dra- matics, and numerous theatrical productions were staged as a part of the cultural fare The Delta Psi Omega, a national honor dramatics fraternity, was chartered in 1934, just one year after the Phi Rho Pi, a national forensic fraternity. It is hoped that the Phi Rho Pi may be reactivated this year with renewed interest in debate and forensics. Significant awards were won in 1951 when the men ' s forensic team took national honors in the Junior College forensic festival by winning first and second places in de- bate, first place each in impromptu speaking, after-dinner speaking, and in declama- tion, and second place in extemporaneous speaking. In 1955, the girls ' forensic team won national honors in the national Junior College speech festival by taking first in debate and first in interpretive reading, and again in 1958 a member of the girls ' team placed first in interpretive reading. Students contemplate teaching The Student Kansas State Teachers Association was first organized at EJC in April of 1953 as the Paul Hawkins Chapter of the Future Teachers of America. The name was changed to the present form in 1958. The purpose of this organi- zation is to provide an opportunity for college students contemplating entering the teaching profession to become better acquainted with the requirements, problems, and compensations of the profession. This organization sponsors speakers, films, and other types of informative programs. It also seeks to encourage high school students within the county to affiliate with student teachers ' organizations. 25 Band and Combo LEFT TO RIGHT: FRONT ROW: Kenneth Shaw, Darell Lindsey, Jo Unger, Sandra Andrus, Sherry Bio ir, Danny Arnold. Music at Juco For the first time in the history of EJC, students this year have had an oppor- tunity to secure credit in a variety of music courses in addition to chorus, which has been a part of the program for many years. Classes in music appreciation and fundamentals of music provide an introductory study. A course in theory offers work in harmony, sight singing, ear training, and keyboard harmony. Credit is also given in courses in applied music, including voice, piano, and organ. The ensemble offers to a select group of students a special chance to learn and enjoy a wide variety of vocal music. Students may also receive credit in band. The college band provides a signifi- cant contribution to all sports events. Still another music group this year has been the Combo Band that has made a study of various types of dance music and has play- ed for a number of social affairs at the college during the year. The music opportunities now offered at EJC are a welcome addition to the cur- riculum. 27 I LEFT TO RIGHT, FRONT ROW: April Russell, Judy Lohse, Amy Jo Sobba, Janie Bean, Carla Eutsler, Sandra Reheis, Barbara Peterson, Linda Wilson, Kaye Allen, Cheryl Doornbos, Bonnie Slifer. The club took an educational journey to various businesses where the members were introduced to specific problems. Several speakers presented v various points of view of particular interest to the club members. All these efforts significantly supplemented the work of the classroom to create a more efficient business personnel for the future. 35 Forensics LEFT TO RIGHT, FIRST ROW: Joyce Thompson, Forensics; Sherry Baer, Forensics; Kay Allen, Debate; Carla Eutsler, Forensics; Dixie DeMoe, Forensics. Tennis, track, and golf, which have at times been a part of the sports schedule, have not maintained a continued interest. The Basketball team of 1952-1953, coached by Dave Weatherby, won honors for itself and EJC by making a surprise comeback and winning the National Junior College tournament after a some- what ordinary season. One of the EJC greats was Augustine Garcia, basket- ball player in 1931-1932, who went on to become a coach at the University of Mexico at Mexico City. Paul Blazavich, in 1958, was select- ed for the mythical Juco Ail-American team in football, and Bob Pekich of this year ' s team was nominated to the same honor. Grizzly Our Mascot From the very first year of our school ' s history the grizzly bear has served as our mas- cot. The pen sketch at the top of the page appeared with other similar drawings in the first GRIZZLY GROWL of 1928. Through sub- sequent years numerous versions of the Grizz- ly appeared according to the interpretations of various yearbook artists. The desire for securing a visible mascot had long been over- ruled because of the impracticality of harbor- ing a grizzly bear around EJC. But one day in the fall of 1948 when Miss Helen Bradford, English instructor, was shopping in Wichita at the Innes department store, she beheld a little brown bear just begging her to take him home with her. A glance at the price arrested her intentions, however, for thirteen dollars at that time was considered an un- reasonably high price to pay for a stuffed animal. But those big soulful eyes and that delightfully perky tongue won out for an immediate adoption. When the little bear arrived at EJC, he was promptly welcomed into the Juco family and was loved, cuddled, and cherished by the entire student body. The yearbook staff assumed the obligation of his cost and forthwith sponsored a contest for his name. Miss Betty Jean Doan (now Mrs. Carl Henn), class of 1948, received the prize, and the new mascot was christened Gruffy T. Grizzly. His first official photo- graph, which appeared in the 1949 yearbook, is reproduced in the upper right corner. Since that time he has been the most photo- graphed personage around EJC. No matter what the season or event, Gruffy is likely to be in the center of activities properly attired for the occasion. His certificate listing him on the Dean ' s Honor Roll demonstrates the very unique place that he has won for him- self at EJC. Intramurals THUNDERBIRDS: D. Fee, C. Stidham, L. Egan, G. James, G. During its thirty-five years, EJC has graduated 1, 662 students who have gone into many different vocations and professions as well as into all parts of the world to use the knowledge they acquired here. May the class of 1962 take their place beside the alumni of EJC and find success in all they do. X Line -Up Commencement Chorus Another first in the his- tory of EJC was performed for the class of 1962, when a sep- arate commencement was held on May 29, at 10:00 A.M. ' Order of the Purple John Berens and Susan Hildreth The Order of the Purple was organized in 1937 to recognize the scholastic attain- ments of students at EJC. Originally, the selection of members was made upon the basis of service, leadership, and character, in addition to scholarship which was a 2.00 grade average on the 3.00 schedule. Later the selection was changed to scholar ship only, with a 2.25 grade average on the 3.00 basis. In 1957, the requirements were increased to a 2.5 grade average. Students who are elected to the Order of the Purple must be enrolled at EJC one full year and carry at least twelve hours per semester. Grades are computed after the first half of the second semester. Since the organization of the Order of the Purple, a total of 210 students have been elected to its membership. We salute the 1962 members of the Order of the Purple.
