The Grizzly team, a top contender for the Kansas Juco Conference all season, finished in third place. They began the season by winning the first two games with ease. Coffeyville, the league winner, handed the Grizzlies their first defeat of the season. Again the Grizzlies started a winning streak, and defeated Ark City, Bacone, and Independence by safe margins. The next setback came from Garden City, the only team that scored more than twenty points against the Grizzlies during the season. The next game, the highlight of the year, was the Juco Homecoming game, November 3. Although Hutchinson played a good game, the high spirited Grizzlies won, 27 to 20. Because of injuries, Highland Junior College forfeited the last game of the season to El Dorado. The 1954 football season turned out to be one of the most thrilling seasons of recent years.
