This freshman class was the largest to invade the halls of E. J. C. in many years. It not only had quanitity but quality as well. The Grizzlies, under Coach Bob Douglass and Assistant Coach Bud Cole, scored an average of nine- teen points per game in the nine-game schedule. Jerry Hayes led the squad with nine touchdowns, Kelly scored four, Griffith and Faulkner each had two, and Jerry Wilson, Billings, Evenson, Rau, Pence, and Baxter had one each. jrootbaii c t ueen Miss Jane Murray was crowned homecoming queen by Captain Frank Gaines dur- ing half-time ceremonies at the Garden City game. The charter of the Paul Hawkins chapter of the Future Teachers of America was issued April 7, 1953. The charter was presented by Mr. Hawkins at the meeting held September 22, 1953. The first-named pur- pose of the F. T. A. is to develop among young people preparing to be teachers an organization which shall be an integral part of the state and national education associations. The 1952-53 charter members included Mrs. Louis Johnson, Nellie Rost, Mrs. Ida Dell Allen, Mrs. Dorothy Deen, Mrs. Dean Stackley, Joan Vogelman, Lorraine Arnold, Mary Phillips, Leslie Winegar, Nettie Belle Parsons, Beverly Reed, and Perry Henman. Aided by the capable performance of Gruffy ' s Graphic, the staff published the largest book of recent years. Besides meeting in regular weekly planning sessions, the staff members had charge of concessions at football and basketball games. Although there have been journalism clubs in previous years, there has never before been a regular class. It was the task of this class to publish a page in the Butler County News each week entitled The Grizzly Growls. Polly McGinnis was this year ' s editor, and Kathy Banks was assistant editor. Business manager was John Hess; exchange editor, Dick Burch; and sports editor, Allen Hawk.
