oso auoa- av RES The Grizzly Growl 050 1931 GRI Foreword Since the student body and faculty deemed it unwise to publish an edition of the Grizzly Growl, the college yearbook, this year the staff of the Junior College News Bulletin decided to concentrate their efforts on one issue in magazine form rather than to publish the three spring numbers of the Bulletin. So this small book does not purport to be an annual but is only a reminder of the school year, 1930-1931. The Sophomore Class of 1930-31 was composed of sixty-five members, many of whom were the most active and wide-awake boosters of the student body of the El Dorado Junior College During the two years of their term within the halls of E.J.C. they have made a name for themselves which will endure upon the pages of history of the El Dorado Junior College. The members have shown their ability in every phase of school life and school activity. On the football field, on the basketball court, the tennis court, the golf course, and on the track, they have held their own and have brought fame and glory to their school. They have given their share of talent necessary for debates and oration. In the college plays leads have been held by many Sophomores. The school work of the members have been above reproach as shown by the frequent appearances of their names on the roll of honor. The officers of the 1930-31 class are President, George Benson,- Vice-President, Marian Stahiman; Sec- retary-Treasurer, Ennis Sand berg. Soph pnomore lass ci, % § Barbara Boston El Dorado, Kans. The upper classmen soon realized that it was not only the largest class ever to enter, but also the liveliest. Headed by an exclusive masculine triumvate made up of Menelaus Litras, Max Tompkins, and Bill Graham, the class has accomplished much this year. Is has not been perhaps the most brilliant class in the history of the college nor the most athletic, but the class of ' 32 has been a combination of both. Their achievements have not been confined to the gridiron and gymnasiun. They have studied a little once in a while, as the honor roll always shows. Freshmen also starred in dramatics. The class was well represented in oratory, declamation, track, tennis, and golf. Freshman Class Jack Kuhns . El Dorado, Kans. Edwarda Cochran El Dorado, Kans. Anna Wilda Hovis El Dorado, Kans. Football Coach SMITH SPEAKER FARRAR WEST FATOUT SCOTT TURNER HIGGINS COOPER Coach THOMAS GUINTY GARCIA RYAN GOOD KISER POFFENBARGER IVES KITCH MOSS TARRANT BENSON THOMPSON ROGERS ' The El Dorado Junior College Football team started the season with a victory over the powerful Chilocco Indians, but such success did not continue. According to the old adage A good beginning foreshadows a bad ending . This was the case of the 1930 season. At the beginning of the season the backfield of the Grizzly squad was considered to be one of the fastest in the Kansas Junior College Conference and the line was thought to have no equal. But Fate took a hand. Early season injuries and loss of squad members due to the lack of necessary grades played havoc with the Grizzly line-up. Here, as in many other college and high schools, day time football was discarded. An experiment in the way of night football was tried this past season. This innovation proved successful in El Dorado. Crowds larger than ever before seemed to enjoy night football as much or more than the ordinary type. The foolball team this year was managed by entirely new system than that of former years. Head Coach Smith and his assistant, Coach Thomas, directed the team jointly. This is the first year that the college has had two coaches to direct the athletic activities. Although many members of the 1930 team will be lost by graduation there will be many to succeed them, and hopes for a powerful eleven for the season 1931 are very bright. Basketball KELLOGG Coach THOMAS GUINTY PORTER GRAHAM WEST LEWELLEN TOMPKINS Trainer ANGLE TARRANT GARCIA JAMES NEUMANN The El Dorado Junior College Basketball team for the year of 1930-31 had one of the best seasons since the college was organized. While El Dorado ' s record in the Kansas Junior College Conference was not so good, its record for the entire season was worthy of mention. In the Junior College Tournament which was held at Baldwin City, Kansas, E! Dorado placed third, This was a very good showing, for the reason that the strongest teams in the conference and strong teams from out of the state were also entered. Much of the credit for this year ' s fine showing is due to the coaching of Coach Thomas. While this is Mr. Thomas ' s first year in college competition, he has shown that he knows how to handle a team and next year he should have a winning group. Thus it has been with the Dramatics Club of El Dorado Junior College. Literally, we have lived this year of 1930-31 to please, and, we have pleased to live. The Dramatics Club has attempted to be an asset to the college in every possible manner. The club ' s outstanding contributions, perhaps, has been the financial backing given to the school. It has been the aim of the Dramatics Club to co-operate willingly and efficiently with all school activities, and, at the same time, to promote the appreciation of dramatics among the students and towns people. The plays prepared and sponsored by this organization have been: The Queen ' s Husband presented November 20 and 21, 1930. A group of one act plays: The Teeth of the Gift Horse ; The Mirror ,- Enduring Hearts given Feb- ruary 12, 1931. The Thirteenth Chair creditably staged on April 17, 1931. The dramatic productions have all been directed by Mr. L. W. Nixon, who has contributed of his time in a most untiring manner to make all the club productions the successes they have been. Officers of the club are President, Ennis Sandberg,- Vice President, Helen Hampson; Secretary, Florence Davis. Gold Diggers WARA PAUL, MILDRED HILER, HAZEL GIBSON, LUCILE WEST, CHARLOTTE BATES, MARY BREEN, FRANCES DOORNBOS, GRACE COULTER, FLORENCE DAVIS, OTA BROYLES, RUTH HOLMAN JUANITA BOLINGER, ALBERTA MONTGOMERY, RUTHETTA WEBER, PAULINE PESRINE, MARY ANNA RUTH, HELEN LIETZKE,DORIS RICH,RUTH RICH, CLAUDINE STEARNS, RUTH BARKER, HELEN WINTERS, CAROL CUNNINGHAM AVIS DAVIDSON, ETHYL SHUMWAY, BARBARA BOSTON, EBBA SANDBERG, ESTHER HOWARD, DORIS ANN GARRISON, FRANCES CALDWELL, ANNA WILDA HOVIS, LUCILLE BAIRD, HELEN BRADLEY. LAILA BISPALA, IMO INSLEY, MABEL KNUST, MAYBELLE JOHNSON, MISS SUE TOWNSEND, RUBY BASSETT, BLANCHE MARSH, HELEN SMITH, EDITH VOGELMAN The Gold Diggers are the members of thz Junior College Girls ' pep club. Since its organization during 1927-28 the club has grown in membership until there are very few girls in school who are not Gold Diggers. All varieties of school activities are included in the program of the club. Taking charge of assembly pep programs, selling hot-dogs and coffee to the football fans at the games, and generally promoting pep at all school activities has been their work for this year. Perhaps the most worthwhile undertaking of the club was the sponsor- ing of a banquet in honor of the football team and coaches. Officers of this organization are Maybelle Johnson, President,- Ebba Sandberg, Vice-President; Ethyl Shumway, Secretary-Treasurer; Miss Sue Townsend, Sponsor. y. w. c. a. The Y.W.C.A. considers the year of 1930-31 one of the most satisfactory in its existence in E.J.C. The social service department was especially active this year in helping the Red Cross and other charitable organiza- tions in distributing aid to the needy. All of the members entered into this work with fine cooperative spirit. World fellowship, peace pacts, and international relationship were the themes of the conference which delegates of the y.W.C.A. attended both at the Junior College Conference in Coffeyville and at the joint y.M. and y.W. Conference at Wichita. A notable undertaking of the y.W. was the vesper service given at the First Methodist Church on April 26. Nearly forty girls took part in this service. Cabinet officers who helped to make this a successful year were Frances Caldwell, Florence Davis, Louise Longnecker, Imo Insley, Anna Wilda Hovis, Barbara Boston, Elizabeth McCall, Margery Kilgore, and Mabel Knust. ? | I FORENSICS x At the Kansas State Junior Collese Forensic n Tournament, which was held at Parsons, Kansas, x May 1st and 2nd, El Dorado Junior College captured first honors in both declamation and oration, and placed third in the debate contest. Miss Helen Leitzke won first place with her declama- tion, The Valiant , and Paul Kitch placed first with his oration, America ' s Duty . Silver loving X cups were awarded to these two contestants. The n debate team was composed of Menelaus Litras X and Roy Farrar, affirmative, and Miss Helen Lietzke 7f and Paul Frisby, negative, with Jack Nixon, alter- X native, This is the first time in the history of the 3 Junior College Association that one school has X taken so many honors.
