The New Jersey State Department of Education has mandated that all stu- dents, beginning with the class of '89 must pass the HSPT (High School Proficiency Test) in order to receive a diploma. Technol- ogy is racing at phenomenal paces. Our stu- dents must be prepared to meet the challenges. Burlington City High School hosted its first Open House during American Education Week. Parents and concerned community members were invited to the school to ob- serve and participate in student daily rou- tines. This activity instituted by our principal, Dr. Mattilyn Rochester, allows the parents to gain a more realistic perspective on the expe- rience of their children. Sharing this with their children enables parents to reflect on their own educational experiences and to help educators better prepare our youth for a com- mitment to excellence. 7
