In Pursuit Of Academic Excellence The New Jersey State Department of Education has mandated that all stu- dents, beginning with the class of '89 must pass the HSPT (High School Proficiency Test) in order to receive a diploma. Technol- ogy is racing at phenomenal paces. Our stu- dents must be prepared to meet the challenges. Burlington City High School hosted its first Open House during American Education Week. Parents and concerned community members were invited to the school to ob- serve and participate in student daily rou- tines. This activity instituted by our principal, Dr. Mattilyn Rochester, allows the parents to gain a more realistic perspective on the expe- rience of their children. Sharing this with their children enables parents to reflect on their own educational experiences and to help educators better prepare our youth for a com- mitment to excellence. 7 RETROSPECTIVELY SPEAKING . Dr. C Joseph Martin Superintendent Burlington City TO THE GRADUATES OF THE CLASS OF 1987: now that you are leaving your Alma Mater to assume your place in society, do so with confi- dence. Your teachers and administrators have prepared you well to assume your new roles. We have not tried to give you the factual an- swers to all of the problems and new challenges that you will encounter during your lives, for indeed, this would be both impractical and impossible. Instead, your teachers have provided you with the critical thinking skills , which, if applied properly to a given problem, will permit you to find solutions and answers to any situation that you my face in today's technological society. On behalf of the Burlington City Board of Educa- tion, I would like to extend best wishes for con- tinued succes to each an every member of the Class of 1987. Dr. C. Joseph Martin Superintendent of Schools Building Administrators Rollin Cunningham Athletic Director Discliplinarian The students of City High are gener- ally well behaved and respectful of authority. However, the complex, problems that face our society are reflected in the problems that face our student population as well. As old ones diminish, new ones sur- face. Effective cooperation and communication is essential in deal- ing with these problems and situa- tions. Our youth must realize the damage that apathy perpetuates and rededicate their commitment to productive citizenship. Our athletic teams are to be com- mended once again for maintaing City's fine tradition. Our teams ex- hibit good sportsmanship and ethi- cal standards when competing. I'm proud of our kids. They repre- sent us well. Mr. Dennis Corbett has been ap- pointed Vice Principal of Burling- ton City High School and Wilbur Watts Middle School after 17 years in the classroom. He works at the Middle School in the mornings and at the High School durinq the second half of the day. The students and facutly con- gratulate Mr. Corbett and wish him well as he embarks on a ca- reer in educational administra- tion. Mr. Dennis Corbett Vice Principal 1987 Heirloom Dedicatee Ed Sanderson 20 Because he is always there when you need him; because he always has a smile and a kind word; be- cause he listens lends a helping hand; because he can always be counted on to do what is best for us, because he is more that a teacher and coach; we are PROUD to call him our friend. This edition of the Heirloom is dedicated to Mr. Edward Sanderson. 21 ACimOWLEDGEMENTS Henry Singer - Student Photographer Mrs. Hutton - Editorial Advisor A MOMENT FOR REFLECTION Myron Howard......His road toward graduation became ah tfphill climb that he could no longer endure. 1969 - 1983 Myron is fondly remembered and sadly missed Dr. Martin gives Administrative support Dr. Rochester, Ms. MacCrindle, Ms. Bowers ‘Whatever your mind can concieve and believe, it will achieve. Dream great dreams and make then come true. Do it now! What you believe yourself to be you are. To accom- plish great things, you must nor only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. Believing is magic. You don't know what you can do until you try. There is no failure except in no longer trying. Mazy goals produce hazy results. Clearly define you goals. Set a deadline, visualize the results and go after them. Just don't look back unless you want to go that way. Defeat may test you; it need not stop you. For every obsta- cle, there is a solution, nothing in the woeld can take the place of persistence. The greatest mistake is giving up. Wishing will not bring success, but planning, persistence and a burning desire will. Success is an attitude. Get your right, it is astonishing how short a time it takes for very wonderful things to happen. How show us tyhe colors of your rainbow.'' It's been a priviledge to work with you this year. May success be yours. God Bless You. Dr. Mattilyn T. Rochester Principal Dr. Mattilyn T.
