Miss Nancy Measey Music and Art Music performance gives a positive sense of individuality as well as a sense of responsibility to self and ensemble which carries into real life situations concerning the self, family, and community. . . “Music is man’s gift to man . . Different styles and ethnic contributions to music should broaden the mind, thus exposing one to varied and different aesthetic and cultural ideas. Art Training. . . the student is treated as an individual and his individuality is encouraged. The process also develops the questioning and analyzing attitude so necessary in today’s world. Art Appreciation . . . and Method develop along with attempting to establish patterns for good citizenship in society. The art program concerns itself with career potential and also hobby enthusiasm in the future lives of our youngsters. Art is a means by which the individual can express himself visually. Art is non-verbal communication of how one thinks and feels. The student is encouraged to express this through his art work. Students are motivated to creatively think of new ideas and solutions to problems presented. They learn there isn’t only one right answer; there are as many as there are individuals. Art. . . exposes a genuine part of him or her self. Mr. Dawson McElwee

Science The enrichment of the students’ lives by Environmental Science will occur by the understanding of how the environment works, and how large an influence we are in upsetting the balance of nature. Physics enriches our lives by promoting a better understanding of our physical world of motion, energy, electricity, sound, light, and atomic energy. Electronics enriches our life by helping us understand electrical principles and measurements so that we can appreciate the technology of the world we live in. The student who is acquainted with earth science should be better able in the future to discuss and to vote intelligently on issues related to earth processes and materials. Issues such as air and water pollution, desalinization of ocean water, testing of nuclear devices, weather control, exploration of space, and use of natural resources will remain entwined in politics. Biology is the study of living things and as such, imparts to the students a better understanding of themselves as well as the world around them. This understanding may be used to explain daily occurrences or may open the doors to biologically oriented careers. Either way, science helps students learn how to question and approach problems in an attempt to solve them. This alone is beneficial to all. Hopefully a student will develop a relationship with his or her environment that will be helpful to them in their adult life . . . Who Needs a Gold Mine? Instead of being labled “English, this subject area should be referred to as a gold mine. Why? Simply because developing skill in the use of the “mother tongue is like mining and minting treasure from a mother-lode vein. From a student's point of view the benefits of owning such a valuable property are endless. How could a student survive in school without being able to read, without understanding what he hears, without being able to speak clearly, without being able to write and make sense, or without being able to apply the rules of the game in using one’s mother tongue? With these pieces of gold the student is able to buy any kind of knowledge in every field of learning. Without them, the student is doomed to a life of intellectual poverty. What is true of school life is even truer of life in the future after formal schooling is completed. The amount of success that can be bought in one's job or career life, in one's social life, in one's political life, in one’s spiritual life, in one's leisure life is determined by the possession of skills in the use of one's mother tongue. So many adults wish they had dug more deeply into that gold mine when they were students. As adults they must either spend their time making up for their past indifference of their native tongue or with being satisfied to make little headway in changing their golden dreams into reality. Mr. Francis Porter — Department Chairman
