Sra. Dora DeAltman Foreign Language The study of foreign language provides the students with practical tools that they can and probably will use someday in a future job situation. Spanish as a foreign language is classified as a “Humanity.” What could be more enriching than to understand how to be humane? The true picture of how an entire nation feels comes only when you can understand the language of the nation. Language is man’s unique accomplishment. It is the basis of all creative thought. Without language there would be no progress, no civilization, no culture. The cultural heritage of mankind resides in language. A foreign language presents so many interesting facets that it is the best medium for introducing the students to the history, civilization and cultural achievements of the foreign people. Since the United States has assumed the political, military, scientific, and cultural leadership of the western world, a knowledge of foreign languages is imperative for the American youth. Even the average citizen must be given some knowledge of foreign languages and their cultures, so they may cope more intelligently with the international problems and with the thousands of foreigners that live and visit the United States. Foreign language study broadens students’ knowledge of other cultures. Foreign language study enhances a student’s view of the world. It allows him her to see how other people live, how they feel they fit into the fabric of history and present day society. Students may be able to appreciate the differences and similarities existing among cultures. Herr Harry Seals Mme. Barbara Fisher — Department Chairman 25
