ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The Class of 1975 was the first class to experience a major change in the English program. In the freshman and sophomore years the present graduates followed the usual English program. One teacher taught all phases of English for the entire school year to the same classes. For many reasons in 1972-1973, the English program was rearranged for the juniors and seniors. Now in each year, eight mini-courses are offered. The first semester includes four skills courses of five weeks duration each. Four different English teachers rotate classes so that each junior and senior takes these; mini-courses: Development Reading, Speech, Language, and Composition. The second semester consists of four literature mini-courses of five weeks duration each. Four English teachers then again rotate these four mini-courses covering the four types of literature study: Drama, the Novel, Poetry, and Prose. In the junior year American Literature is the source of reading; in the senior year, English Literature supplies the reading mate- rial.

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT One of the goals of the Social Studies Department is to promote better understanding of human relationships — past, present, and future. The Department has implemented several changes to foster achievement of this worthy goal. New courses, such as Local History, Anthropology, Urban Studies, and Non-Western Cultures, now complement the traditional programs: American History, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Economics, World Problems, and The Humanities. The Department is continuously seeking ways to achieve this goal and will continue making significant changes aimed at keeping pace with the challenges posed by the growing complexities of American and World cultures. Mr. David Burolicll Mr. Dominic Cicali — Mr. Edward Sanderson 27 Department Chairman

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT In addition, the pure electives program of the English Department includes offerings such as World Literature, Media Studies, Advanced Composition, Creative Writing, and Journalism. These elective courses are geared for enrichment as well as for further English skills development. The concentrated mini-courses approach with each teacher focusing attention on a specialty should guarantee that the graduates will possess adequate basic communication skills in after school years. Our school expects its graduates to be well prepared in their language whether their plans include further education or call for taking a place in the modern social and economic world. As pioneers in this rearranged English program, the Class of 1975 has contributed greatly to the educational advancement of future BCHS students as well as having gained a fuller and more practical understanding of their language and literature.
